I'm not that close to any of my friends, so I would probably cut the rope.
From a moral point of view I would like to try to save them, but when you're staring death in the face, realistically you would do anything it takes to survive.

That "turn for the worst" wasn't caused by my "friend" was it?

I'll probably die trying to save the both of us.

I have problems willfully killing others, so I'd try to save my friend. Because, I can't look a real friend in the eye (seeing as I only have a few real friends, and they mean much to me) and condemn them. I'd more easily kill myself.

THE NEEDS OF THE MANY OUTWEIGH THE NEEDS OF THE-
oh wait, that don't work here because it's equal...
Well, better one man dying than two.

Edit:Actually, come to think of it, most of my friends are smaller than I am, and thus easy to pick up.
So I could probably get us both out of there.

I doubt I'd be bloody stupid enough to get in this dilemma to start with! But yes, I agree with Manaman in that this isn't really a moral dilemma: your friend is screwed either way so you shouldn't feel guilty cutting the rope.

I would try to save him. He's my food supply for surviving the harsh mountain winters.

Cut the rope.

We are alone, so I could just say it was an accident, and no one would ever be the wiser.

It was technically an accident anyway.
I meant my friend's falling.
Oh perfect sense. Yeah, but your answer is crazy! I would pull him up, kill him, and then cut the rope.

:D
I wouldn't kill him because I'm a homicidal maniac. I just want to save my own ass.

*Snip*....... it would only be a moral dilemma if the alternative was to SAVE your friend and you die, then it is a tough decision.

I'll take my chances and try to save both of us. I couldn't live with knowing I condemned a friend to death.

Its not about what what you think you would do
Its how you would react immediately when presented with the situation
With all of that adrenalin pumping, and a near death situation like that with no more than 5 seconds at the most deciding between life and death like that you would have no time to think, you would just react
and, in my case that would be trying to save my friend.

Cut the rope. Moral dilemmas are for -after- you take the action that ensures your safety.

I would prefer not to live with the guilt of having killed my friend without even trying to rescue him, despite the risk of killing us both, instead of just him. I guess I'm just strange.

Ask him, and go immediately with his answer, if hes too slow I will attempt to haul him up.
If I was on the bottom, I would let go personally, as a poster said maths:
2-2=0
2-1=1

Your answer made you sound crazier.

OT: Why can't we call emergency services for help and just wait until they arrive?
In the situation described, I'm probably going to agree with the math and cut the rope, even if it comes out as murder and the rest of that life is in jail or ended a week later in a public execution.
