Look at it this way, in UK law you could get sacked at work for doing that. I'm sure the rest of the western world is similar.

So basically you're better getting suspended and learning not to use discriminatory words now than what could happen in the work place.

this.

The guy may be an asshole but using derogatory racial or life style choices is wrong..... unless their a christian then it's all good.

What does "really gay" mean?

Like this?

If so, he's kinda fulfilling the stereotype. And its always been my belief that if you fulfill the stereotype, I can call you the derogatory name for your race/sexuality.

No. Words are words. I don't think there's anything wrong with homosexuality and I don't go around making fun of them, but that's the truth.

It should only be considered bullying if physical contact takes place (*punch*) or somebody advocates physical harm taking place (hey brah we should totally beat up that fag!). Same goes for the hurrrr durrrrrr types that an hero because someone sent them messages on Myspace.

I realize cyber-bullying is wrong, but have some self-control.

It's really no different to racially abusing someone, so yes, the punishment was justified.

If a kid was intentionally harassing me, I'd skip words and kick him in the balls.

OT: No, because the gay kid got nothing for bothering people.

"Gay" and "******" are not synonyms. The latter is very clearly derogatory. It's like saying that "black" and "******" are synonyms.
Well now that explains why black people don't seem to like me.

Do they not teach people about context in school these days?

I have known gay people to joshingly use the term fag with each other and no offense be given or taken from it.

He could have used the word gay, queer, homosexual... whatever, it does not matter one tiny bit, if it was in a derogatory context it is intended as an insult and therefore simply categorized as bullying... surely something so simple requires no thought or debate.

What I will say though is the punishment does not fit the crime and that it may be a political move on the schools part to not defame their reputation by giving leniency to what is essentially a hate crime.

Also, the circumstances are too vague no one here really knows what the kid did to get called a fagget 'acting gay' is relying on stereotypes and judgements of the readers to fill in the blanks.

If for instance child A kicked child B in the balls unprovoked and then child B responded with a vocal insult then clearly child A is where the punishment should lie and child B should be told to watch his mouth in the future.

Also... as a note, I voted yes because I feel that though suspension is too much if I voted no it could be taken that using derogatory terms is perfectly acceptable rather than he should have been punished or warned to a much lesser degree.

You get suspended for saying the wrong words now? What's next, you have to do some kind of 'special walk' ?

So should someone get in trouble for saying the truth?
Ok here's the story. There's this really gay kid and he loved to annoy everyone by acting all gay around them. He was messing around with on of my friends and he called him a fagget. Instantly he went and snitched on him. Now he's suspended when he comes back from Christmas break.

So my question is should he have been suspended. I know that calling someone a fagget is more offensive then calling them gay but really aren't they about the same thing?
+ 1 fail point to you sir. Really?

sigghhhhhhhh.

Also ****** dosn't mean gay ppl anymore it means Harley Bikers.

OT: This sounds much too like a plea for reassurance. It sounds like you only want some 'yes-men' - Not an opinion. (Who knows, I could be wrong o.o)

So unless the scene is renacted perfectly for me to witness, I make no comment :D

No, being suspended for a mere comment makes no sense.

Suspension only makes sense for repeat or continuous offenders (of which there are many).

That doesn't make the comment okay. It's a derogatory term use, as others above have pointed out. A lesser use of discipline would make sense here.

You can get suspended for that?! Holy crap! In my school, if some guy beat the crap out of another one, he'd get a few days detention! What the fuck!

No. Any offense taken is entirely the gay kid's fault. I don't don't know why people are pointing out the fact that it was intended as an insult, great job spotting the obvious, guys! That's what you do when people piss you off, you insult them, then you insult them based on a distinguishing characteristic or mannerism to make them feel bad, and then you deck them. Depending on how much they piss you off.

Jesus christ, if we got suspended for insulting each other at my school, there would be no school. I slashed at a guy with a saw and beat the hell out of him, and I never even got a word from the teachers.

Its no different that calling an italian a wop, or a black guy a ******, or a arab a towelhead. They all mean the same thing from a purely definition standpoint, but the term is generally accepted as derogotory. You friend deserves the punishment he received and should take it like a man.

just because something means the same doesn't mean the term chosen should not be punished.

Additionally from your fact set he was not labelling the guy he was trying to offend since the kid was "acting all gay" and from your tone that was not cool in your friends perspective.

BTW this has nothing to do with videogames.

No.

He is not using the term to point out that the boy is a homosexual, rather to use it as a slur against him. Calling him "Gay" would have been the same in context.
Gosh Darn. I was going to say this.
