if the person can't take it , they shouldn't shoot their mouth off ... and learn to develop a thick skin because here in the real world you would get eaten alive

If he was going out of his way to piss your friend off, then no, your friend shouldn't have gotten suspended, if anything the gay one should have gotten suspended because he was provoking your friend, but I guess justice is a load of bullshit and chips

He is not using the term to point out that the boy is a homosexual, rather to use it as a slur against him. Calling him "Gay" would have been the same in context.
What if he was gay and being a fag? Is he a gay fag? (Oh southpark, how I love you)

So my question is should he have been suspended. I know that calling someone a fagget is more offensive then calling them gay but really aren't they about the same thing?
In the same way that Vag**a and C**t are the same things, I suspect one would get you in a lot more trouble if you went around saying it.

The language of swearing is an interesting one - its an ever changing status based on society. It depends on the way its said and the time and the place. To put it in writing takes away all context from the comment.

Take for example, the N word. If I just wrote "Hey N***ger" it is unclear as to how it is said. If can be used as a friendly comment between two people, yet it can also be used as an insult.

In order to answer your question, we would need to know *how* it was said. If it was a playful comment then the suspension is a litle over the top, but if it was said in spite then he deserves it. To be honest, the tone of your post "There's this really gay kid and he loved to annoy everyone by acting all gay around them." sounds like you've already made up your mind about this guy and not in a positive way either!

While you are correct, ****** isn't always derogatory towards gay people. It's got to the point that it's just a meaningless 'insult'.

Well here's what I think that asshole knows how to exploit the system so he pisses people of by acting the way he does because he knows that if someone reacts aggressively the school will have to back him up because they are afraid of the bad publicity. So your friend calls him a fag and gets suspended but he goes unpunished. The way I see it the proper thing to do was to punish both of them. And seriously people don't pay attention to assholes who provoke you in school, school is a place for learning now after school when you cross the courtyard gates this is the place for a swift punch to the balls .

-.-

Would you be surprised if you heard about a white guy getting the piss beat out of him for calling a black guy the N-word?

Would you think maybe he was acting stupid using a socially sensitive - if not deeply insulting - term?

---

If the salience of that hypothetical escapes you, then there is little more to discuss.

I am no spelling genious but I think you mean `******`

`******` is a derogatory word used towards homosexuals. One of the older meanings of ****** was a bundle of sticks that were used to burn in a fire. The word became applicable to homosexual men due to the said practice of burning the excecuted corpses, or live burnings, for the crime of `homosexuality. As it was considered at the time.

I am not sure if your friend knew that, in addition, since the word `c**t` (pardon me) used to mean `woman`, and `bl**dy (excuse me again) used to refer to `the blood of Christ, perhaps the history of such expressions is not so important.

Either way, it seems like your friend used this word to attack the person in question. Harsh insults should be kept between friends. Insulting people that you do not like to their face is just bad manners.

I called someone an idiot and got put on probation. Their post was idiotic, so where's the logic?

Calling a homosexual person a ****** is the same as calling a black person a ******.

It might mean the same thing technically, but it has a very different emotional meaning and is considered very offensive.

Probably not but, I can understand where the school is coming from. Schools pretty much have to raise kids now-a-days and many schools (the good ones at least) have adopted a zero tolerance attitude towards slurs of any kind. Your friend should have known better and should have brought the harassment to the attention of a teacher. If the kid was really acting "gay" around your friend then it can easily be called sexual harassment and then the other kid would have gotten into trouble.

If I had been the principle I would have told them both to get the fuck out of my office and fight it out in the hallway in a spot not covered by security cameras.

It sounds heartless but a good scrap is the best way for boys to settle diffrences at that age.

Whilst I may agree that suspension was a fairly harsh punishment, I voted "Yes", because I still believe that punishment was very necessary.

Also, I'm very interested to learn exactly what "acting all gay" entails.

While suspension for an isolated insult is not necessarily fair, I believe the punishment leveled to be appropriate.

Let me explain.

This story will no doubt spread around your school very quickly. This, hopefully, will result in a fostering of an attitude among the students that using derogatory slurs, no matter the audience at hand, is only to be done in special cases(Like a black friend who is clearly fine with you using the old N word, jokingly). Hopefully, your friend will not only be able to tolerate more from asshats without resorting to verbal assault(Hah!) but will become aware of when it is safe to use such language.

Also, the school can claim a zero tolerance attitude, which makes the public viewing of such a school much better.

I would assume this fellow was attempting to provoke a response such as was made by your friend for the purpose OF inflicting some kind of punishment on him.

That being said, I am, in no way, a fan of being politically correct. I have always and will always refer to the mental retarded as such. Although the term is seen as being derogatory, I mean no harm by using the word. I simply feel as if the term is proper and see no reason to stop using it.

I would never have referred to them as retards in front of a teacher, though.

Detention would have been a tad more reasonable.

To late we got that to. My brother got a detention for for doing the "Your a Jerk" dance down the stairs and accidentally knocking down another student.

Well, you have a great time explaining that to all the gay people that you call faggots without any consideration of its connotations. I'm sure they'll be completely understanding if it really has become "meaningless."

As I Hispanic, I've heard a lot worse from people.
You learn to deal with it.
Frankly, I think the homosexual kid overreacted.
But from what you say, it seems like he was intentionally trying to get your buddy in deep shit.
