It's a little embarassing but my favourite comic character of all time is
...Cable.

I used to read his comics as a young-in in the '90s, then I never read anymore comics, that is until I started reading Cable and Deadpool, which in turn caused me to read House of M and Civil War. Well before I knew it I'd read all of the crossovers from Avengers Disassembled to Dark Reign (and eventually Siege). Then I went on to devour all the great comics (Preacher, Sandman, Transmetropolitan etc).

So yeah Cable got me back into comics, I've always loved him because he was a badass with or without his powers, a soldier first and a costumed hero second, someone who never gives up, using his telekinesis, telepathy, a big gun or even his fists to kick ass.

Second place is tied with

I think Cable suffers a lot from his origins. Created by Liefeld, had his heyday during the "grim-n-gritty 90s", a tendency to use ridiculous looking guns in a comic where most characters have cool superpowers, a background story that involves alternate universes and time-traveling, he's really hard to like for some people, especially people who are just starting to explore his background.

And yeah, Thor and Ares are totally badass. :)

Also, did you read the 2006 Ares mini? So. Effing. Awesome.

I think he's improved a lot recently, Cable and Deadpool managed to lampoon a lot of his ridiculous background and his involvement in Messiah Complex and Second Coming is quite compelling. But yeah when my friends who aren't familiar with him ask about his origin, I do sigh and try to give a very abridged version, however the questions start around the words "Clone of Jean Grey"...

And yeah, Thor and Ares are totally badass. :)

Haha hell yes. That entire mini was made of win and awesome.
Yeah, did you read the Dark Reign : Ares mini? Where he trains a team of H.A.M.M.E.R. soldiers, that was pretty awesome.

He rides a bomb and at another point fires a minigun one-handed while sculling beer.

DC: The Joker.

Marvel: Deadpool.

I like how they never take anything seriously & use oldschool violent humor.

Promethea.
I've heard that name before, but I can't seem to remember where. Care to share some more details?
5-book series of Graphic Novels by Alan Moore, detailing the adventures of a girl who becomes the embodiment of human imagination, Promethea, exploring states of conciousness through the medium and metaphor of the Qaballa's Tree of Life, and the Tarot, among other things.

That's the one with
"We have to retreat!"
"NEVER SAY THAT WORD! THAT'S ONE OF SISTER'S WORDS!"
right?

Yeah, it's awesome as well.

Sounds interesting. Maybe I'll keep an eye out for it.

"Stationary Offense?"

...when Ares somehow inevitably makes his way back from the dead, they also bring back his Deadly Shades as well

I would buy a monthly of Ares supported by a team of badass commandos fighting monsters and gods. Especially if the Shades adopted a mixture of modern and ancient greek equipment like Ares, modern day webbing over breasts plates, swords on their backs M4s in their hands, Corinthian helms with night vision and throat mics.

And the greatest part of it is that the fifth part has some great cameos from other ABC titles, and there's a clown-villain who ISN'T A JOKER RIP-OFF. (Not being sarcastic or anything, the painted doll is unbelievably unique.)

Yeesh. Three pages into the thread and no one has bothered to mention this guy?

And this gal:

Or this guy:

And I confess a sneaking fondness for this one as well:

That's Hellboy, Death, Jesse Custer (Of the comic "Preacher") and Marv from "Sin City".

I like DC and my favourite Character is Superman.

He gets allot of hate for not being Batman Dark and Gritty. But i think he is actually a realy Interesting Character.
You didn't just say that Superman is an interesting character.. or did you? YOU DID?!

..I think I just overloaded from sheer ire and pure raeg.

Tell me, which part of Superman do you find interesting - his superpowers, that always let him defeat enemies, and make him impossible to get killed... and then he came back from the dead. Or is it his only two weaknesses, a red sun's light and kryptonite... and apparently, he can just use LEAD to protect against both. Since he can regenerate, lead poisoning is not an issue, so he could just cover himself in a thin layer of lead to block of the radiation.

Face it, Superman is as interesting character as fights against Wolverine, who survived being reduced to a skeleton.

Who the hell even NEEDS arms? At least, when it comes to everyone NOT being a friend of Hellboy.

But yeah, my favorite comic book characters - Deadpool, Hellboy and Ultimate Spider-Man.

Ooh, nice choices!

Though I must admit I'm not a huge fan of Jesse Custer. Preacher was pretty cool, but the character just didn't sit well for me. Too much "God sucks" for me. I generally like Ennis as a writer (Hellblazer, Hitman, Preacher, The Demon... gotta love the guy), but he tends to go too far overboard with certain themes. I'm not a religious man myself, but "God sucks" is one theme he tends to lay on way too thick for my taste. See also the otherwise very funny Chronicles of Wormwood.

I say DC because of Batman. Batman himself is an awesome character with a good backstory and with weight on WHY he even bothers with wandering the night and saving the people of Gotham. However, the real reason for me liking the Batman comic so much is mostly because of the villains. The Joker, The Riddler, Hugo Strange, Mr. Freeze, Phosphorus they're all awesome.
(I know i've left out several villains that should be included in a list of Batman villains, but these are the ones that come to mind right now)

I've always maintained that Superman is exactly as interesting as the person writing him. Focusing on his power is the wrong thing to do, because as you say he's just too powerful for most situations. What most people fail to realize though, is that there are a lot of DC heroes that are arguably more powerful than Supes, or at least his equals. Martian Manhunter, Captain Marvel, the motherfucking Flash, etc.

Here's a couple of stories that really show Superman's interesting side, more or less in order of how much I personally like them (from great to good):

- Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
- Lex Luthor: Man of Steel
- Hitman: Of Thee I Sing
- Superman: Red Son
- Superman: Secret Identity
- Kingdom Come
- All-Star Superman

If you've read those and still hate Superman, then you're a lost cause as far as I'm concerned.

Sorry, I only saw this thread now, or I'd have mentioned Death. It's hard not to love her. . .

And then I'm going to have to go with the protagonist cell entity of The Invisibles, a superorganism made up of five or so really memorable people. Jack Frost the Liverpool Buddha, King Mob the scorpion death god slash author avatar, Lord Fanny the transvestite Brazilian sorceress, John-a-Dreams the timesuit test pilot and all the rest.

If I had to choose it would be Dark Horse.

But my favorite would be Caitlin Fairchild from Gen 13.

I chose marvel, because I think they have the best universe and all.

My favourite character however is The Crow.
