And then I'm going to have to go with the protagonist cell entity of The Invisibles, a superorganism made up of five or so really memorable people. Jack Frost the Liverpool Buddha, King Mob the scorpion death god slash author avatar, Lord Fanny the transvestite Brazilian sorceress, John-a-Dreams the timesuit test pilot and all the rest.
I actually have a couple of The Invisibles TPBs lying somewhere around here, but I never really managed to get into them. Too trippy for my taste I guess. I'll admit I haven't really given them a fair shot though... too distracted all the time and I kinda forgot I even had them until now. :p

It's supposed to be trippy. The Invisibles have done more than the average mind-blowing, it has changed my entire way of thinking. Twice.

But Morrison is also an excellent character writer when he's not busy filling the pages with optic LSD. :3

I like DC and my favourite Character is Superman.

He gets allot of hate for not being Batman Dark and Gritty. But i think he is actually a realy Interesting Character.
You didn't just say that Superman is an interesting character.. or did you? YOU DID?!

..I think I just overloaded from sheer ire and pure raeg.

Tell me, which part of Superman do you find interesting - his superpowers, that always let him defeat enemies, and make him impossible to get killed... and then he came back from the dead. Or is it his only two weaknesses, a red sun's light and kryptonite... and apparently, he can just use LEAD to protect against both. Since he can regenerate, lead poisoning is not an issue, so he could just cover himself in a thin layer of lead to block of the radiation.

Face it, Superman is as interesting character as fights against Wolverine, who survived being reduced to a skeleton.
I've always maintained that Superman is exactly as interesting as the person writing him. Focusing on his power is the wrong thing to do, because as you say he's just too powerful for most situations. What most people fail to realize though, is that there are a lot of DC heroes that are arguably more powerful than Supes, or at least his equals. Martian Manhunter, Captain Marvel, the motherfucking Flash, etc.

Here's a couple of stories that really show Superman's interesting side, more or less in order of how much I personally like them (from great to good):

- Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
- Lex Luthor: Man of Steel
- Hitman: Of Thee I Sing
- Superman: Red Son
- Superman: Secret Identity
- Kingdom Come
- All-Star Superman

If you've read those and still hate Superman, than you're a lost cause as far as I'm concerned.
Thank you, Any one whos says "OMFGZ Zuperman is unbeatabubbles its not kewl at all" really needs to look at other heros, SERIOUSLY. you pointed out the Flash who used to just run fast but now he has some Magic Aura and can run backwards in time and punch your pregnant mum in the stomach.

Either DeadPool, or the God of Dreams from Sandman. I can't explain, I just kind of love them, Deadpool for his psychopathic, though still hilarious nature, and the God of Dreams because he's just such a damn badass.

I don't visit Nijmegen very often, but I'll definitely make a note of it if I ever stop by. I do also wonder where you get your comics online. Amazon's pretty decent too, next to bol.com, but maybe you found a cheaper shop by now? One that *gasp* might not require a creditcard! That's a rarity it seems.

As for Constantine, cheers for the recommendations. I'll bookmark this whole topic, it's full of win. Ares and Thor sound just ungodly (see what I did there?) awesome. Superman...as a Soviet hero?! Do. friggin. WANT!

I love Rorschach from Watchmen. He's like Batman, only while Batman beats up evildooers while defending the city, Rorschach cuts out the middle man (literally) and mutilates anyone who even has a mean thought about him. He's like the crazy homeless man of comics: he's a sociopathic lunatic, but you know he could still beat the crap out of you with no reason.

I mostly rely on Amazon as well. Sometimes when I really want something and I can't find it I just Google away until I can find a place that has it and will ship it here, but I'm afraid I haven't got some kind of special secret address I get my TPBs from. I wish! :p

And yeah, both Thor are supreme badasses.

You like Superman as a Soviet hero? Wait until you see Batman as a villain (kind of)! Ok, that first picture is a total shop, but still!

Yeesh. Three pages into the thread and no one has bothered to mention this guy?

And this gal:

Or this guy:

And I confess a sneaking fondness for this one as well:

That's Hellboy, Death, Jesse Custer (Of the comic "Preacher" and Marv from "Sin City".
Ooh, nice choices!

http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq84/DurrHurr/characters/hellboy.jpg

Though I must admit I'm not a huge fan of Jesse Custer. Preacher was pretty cool, but the character just didn't sit well for me. Too much "God sucks" for me. I generally like Ennis as a writer (Hellblazer, Hitman, Preacher, The Demon... gotta love the guy), but he tends to go too far overboard with certain themes. I'm not a religious man myself, but "God sucks" is one theme he tends to lay on way too thick for my taste. See also the otherwise very funny Chronicles of Wormwood.
True, but being an atheist, I found that less objectionable. I liked the whole "Word of God" thing and Nemesis- and his family. Man, how sick and twisted were *THEY*?

Oh, and one other thing. It's not really a character, per se, but I really like the Gotham PD series- all of the characters. That happens to be one of my favorite series in comics today. I also used to love the original Legion of Superheroes, before the whole reboot and threeboot thing. :p

Other good series in indie comics: Ironwood, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, the Elementals series from Comico, along with their "Mage" series, and The Southern Knights.

I'm an atheist too, and I didn't find it annoying because it's blasphemous or anything, just because he laid it on way too thick. With lines like "grabbing God by the balls and squeezing" it just crosses the line from interesting to retarded for me.

You're right about his family though. But my favorite character from that title is without a doubt Cassidy. Now there's a messed up son of a *****. I've got a soft spot for bastards, and Cassidy is just such a lovable asshole. And let's not forget Herr Starr. I can't think of any (human) character who endured that much punishment and deserved every single bit of it.

Rorschach will always be my favourite. I fuckin' named my cat after him.

I named my ferret after him, but he's passed away.

Although Marvel has a load of great characters, my absolute favorite is Hellboy, published by Dark Horse (incidentally the same guys who are publishing Yahtzee's book). I mean, Hellboy is a demon meant to bring about the apocalypse, and his main enemy is Rasputin. Yes, that Rasputin, and the whole universe has a Lovecratfian thing going on. It's awesome. He's just so insanely badass, and Guillermo Del Toro made the films awesome (Kroenen goes from being a meek scientist in the comics, to an awesome assasin with a clockwork heart).

Speaking of movie adaptions, the greatest ever comic book adaption is Sin City (also Dark Horse, yay!). The comics are amazing too, cheers Frank Miller!
[sub]I say awesome too much. Sorry.[/sub]

Hm. Out of all of those, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is the only one I've read. I actually saw the (rather mediocre) movie first, and was pleasantly surprised at how much better the comic was. I liked the story with the Martians best. The invisible guy's betrayal and death, Hyde's last stand, wondering about what Moreau's secret weapon was until it turned out the be a completely different kind of hybrid from what I was expecting... Very awesome.

I also got a kick out of the Black Dossier, especially their reimagining of James Bond as a treacherous double-spy and psychotic rapist. :p

Yes, that was cool. I also love reading the annotations of Jess Nevins. I have the books of his about the first two LoEG series, where he explains who damn near every background character is and what all the adverts mean and are. Some are actual ads from that time (Pears' Soap), while others are in-jokes from the artist or author.

Ironwood is a very adult comic- It's written by Bill Willingham. and is about the juvenile Dragon named Dave Dragovon, hired by a female pirate named Pandora Breedswright to find a wizard named Gnaric to end a curse she is under. Basically, she can trade places with a magical creature when she is in danger to defend herself, but the creature needs a heavy session with sex to trade places back.

Mage involves a man named Kevin Matchstick, who is actually Arthur reborn (or something like that). There are three series planned, and the first two have been written and published. The first series has him facing off against a creature called the Umbral Sprite, and he is being mentored by a Mage named Mirth, who is missing both legs, but can create ones for himself out of animated bandages that let him walk around. Mirth is Merlin. The second series has him replaced by a man named Wally Ut-who may also be Mirth (at one point, he changes into Mirth after Kevin walks away, but we never see him like that again.

The Elementals was a series about four people who had become elemental spirits after dying in a way related to an element. One was a female homicide detective who burned to death in a fire- she became a fire elemental. The Earth Elemental was a young man crushed in a cave collapse. The air elemental was a coast guard pilot who asphyxiated in a helicopter crash, and the water Elemental was a debutante who drowned in a boating accident. Unlike all the others, her skin turned permanently green and she had webbed hands and feet.

The Southern Knights was a Superhero team set in Atlanta, Georgia. They had a number of different characters. One, Electrode, was a science geek who had given himself Electrical Powers. There was a short, blonde girl who was super-strong and durable, a girl named Val who wielded a "psychic sword" that made people pass out from pain but caused no permanent harm, a man who was actually a shapeshifted Dragon, and another man who turned out to be a magician/sorcerer from colonial times.

All good series. :)
