I picked the third option. I think with the deceptional trailers and video's these days we have the right to at least try the damn game. Even with demo's they show you the best parts of the game and then when you buy the full package the rest is so boring. As long as you buy the game you liked after you've played it, I'm okay with it. At least, that's how I do things.
I'm not risking getting my PS3 chipped or whatever it is, to play pirate games.

I don't download new games. If a new game seems interesting enough I get a demo, then buy it/don't buy it.
Also, some game developing companies have proven to be real dicks towards their loyal fans, I have no moral qualms what so ever about piracing their games (Activision, blizzard, rockstar). It also works the other way around, If I love one company enough I'd never even think about piracing their games(Bungie, valve, 2K, Bioware, THQ).
I know there are some ethical self contradictions in there, you don't have to point them out.

I have pirated a game once or twice to check if it was possible to run, but I bought the game afterwards.
I don't see a problem problem with cracking a game I already own with a pirate's crack though, DRM is a pain.

In the case of a really old game that isn't circulated any more or a game that isn't imported into the player's country or obtainable via Steam or a similar program (Example: Mother), it should be perfectly acceptable to pirate said game.

I occasionally pirate old games that I'd like to play, but have gone out of circulation or are unobtainable without setting the entire world in motion to get them. Seeing as I'm a PC gamer, I also sometimes download a pirated version of a game to see if it can run on my system, and if it does, I buy it. I use a laptop for gaming, so the system requirements given in a game FAQ or whatever aren't always viable. If it's a game without an online part, I also might download a crack so that I don't have to have a CD/DVD available at all times. And, I must also confess to downloading games that I already own, but want to have on a seperate system. I recently moved and bought a new computer, and left many of my games at home, and I have no qualms about "pirating" something that I already own a copy of.
I don't really like the idea of pirating in general though, because it is obvious that it's dangerous to the gaming community, with publishers imposing crazy DRM's on us and all (like the proposed Ubisoft one that's been discussed on this forum), and in the end it might force PC gamers to switch to a console like the PS3, which I assume acquiring pirated software for is more difficult for said pirates.

I've got the same stance, if its avaliable to buy then don't pirate no matter what and those that do should be punished heavily (those demoing with a burnt copy dont count if they intend on buying the game).kampori said:

I can say honestly am glad I torrented Bionic Commando. I dodged the bullet there, terrible game. In all honesty am usually playing CS:S or WC3 so most games I buy or pirate I only complete 1 run-through unless it's online, therefore making £40-50 for a new game a bit steep unless it's online, and even then I usually go back to those 2 games. I also torrent games I own but can't be bothered to find the disk for.
In terms of games only for trying them, I personally got sick of being burned by buying a promising game that had either a short demo or none at all, playing for two or so hours and never touching it again. Now I can actually put my money towards developers who actually make a game I like and enjoy.
Also I don't know if this counts but there have been times I've bought the game for the 360 and then pirated the PC version (whether it was because the 360 version came out earlier and I wanted to play it but then wanted to finish it on the PC, or the English version for the PC just wasn't available locally.)

Many games shops in Australia have an unconditional 7 day return policy, so I don't really get dicked if I buy a game and it turns out shit as I'll just take it back and swap it for something else. That said, because of the excessive price of Australian games and the general lack of interest I rarely bother with this, I'll often just pirate a game, dismiss it as crap and move on. Every now and then, if a game is reasonably priced and has no DRM (well, sometimes steam...but very, very rarely) I'll buy it, though a lot of the time this just ends with me having a game I never play (like demigod).
Ultimately, I'm quite happy to pirate games until something holds my interest. Before call of duty degenerated into shit I got a copy of a friend, and while it was a legitimate copy it probably counts as pirating, I loved the game and ended up buying 1, 2 and 4..I regret buying 4 and probably won't buy any again, but that's an example. Another example is killing floor, I played the mod and saw that the steam release was very different, so I downloaded an illegal copy, played it at a lan and all of my lan friends ended up buying it (myself included).

I pirate new games to try them out because im not going to pay 60 dollars for a game (avp) to find out its a total piece of shit and can't return it.
I'm fine with people who pirate, as long as they don't brag about it.

Anyhow, do you know how ridiculously stupid it is to claim that music and film would be doomed? Music and films will never dissapear. Anyway, yes, I do pirate. I used to download games and such, but I don't do that anymore, mainly because I don't want to mod my 360. I have quite a few pirated PS2 games, but I can only find them second hand now anyway, so that isn't hurting the industry. As for music, I usually only buy compilation CD's, they are generally more value for money. I do own some normal albums legally though.
The only games I have pirated are ones that I can't find a copy of anywhere. Also because I am not a PC gamer and you can't really pirate PS3 games as far as I know.
If no demo, I will DL a single player give it a whirl and if it's worth a damn I'll support and buy it.
Old games? Like roms ect, once 10 years is done your game doesn't vanish into history. I'm downloading it... and no I don't consider it priacy if the only fear say nintendo has about me playing NES Zelda 1 and 2 is I won't play new games....yeah full of it.
