You have to! There is no choice. The magic is forcing you to think that there is no time for some reason, don't ask how this happens :/
Or you could say that everyone dies.
If everybody else dies, then that would include whoever is controlling the "magic". Why would they willingly kill themselves and everyone else - but not me?

If everyone dies, then that's the same as me dying, because when I'm dead I've got no guarantee that the rest of humanity will be kept alive (and, give that we're assuming atheism here, I've got no way of looking down from my cloud in heaven and verifying this) so they may as well die, I mean... you know, whatever.
Basically this.

I doubt I could sacrifice myself for everyone else, I hold most of my fellow humans in contempt anyway. But, on the other hand, being alone would probably suck, so I would probably not press anything. Or something like that.
No-one is controlling the magic - it is born of nature. I suggest you don't worry about this sort of thing and pretend my situation has no flaws... ie. the situation is DEFINITELY TRUE, and somehow verifiable.

There is a reason there is no option for not pressing any button. You could say that if you don't press any button there is some sort of magical super torture that you can't resist.
I'm trying to keep the explanation open because it doesn't really matter.
Am I allowed to stand back and throw shoes at the buttons till I hit one? o_O

Well I'd kill myself, obviously. You'd probably end up doing it anyway after you'd kill the 7 billion other people on the planet.
This is very true. What's the benefit of killing everyone on Earth but yourself? Living a solitary life in abandoned civilization with no companionship, love, or new developments is not something a lot of people would want to experience.

Also, 1 vs 6 billion? Come on. At least make me think about it.

I'd save myself. Humans fuck this planet up enough as is and once I'm gone it can go back to being the way nature intended it to be.

What the fuck are we supposed to do after we kill the whole human race? If I could save a small handful of people then I might consider that option but as it is, I will just kill myself since my life would be completely worthless without anyone else around. Seriously, where's the incentive for this option?
The real incentive is that when you are dead, there is absolutely NOTHING that matters anymore. That means that the human race doesn't matter. So the real question is, is it better to be dead or to live even if the life is filled with whatever emotion comes to you after the human race dies. That's what I meant by not being objective when I stated my opinion in the OP.

Also, hydroelectricity plants would continue running automatically for decades (although I don't know how long powerlines would last. You could always stay at the power plant). And you could probably find safe human-made food for at least a decade, maybe indefinitely. I don't think there would be a major problem with food, you could also hunt if you needed to. This paragraph is addressing what other people are saying more that you.

I'd sacrifice myself, one for the many. And besides....if everyone else dies..who will finish all the games that have yet to be released. Things like Skyrim wouldn't come out! Although I wouldn't mind the next Call of Duty Cash Cow to not be released.

I actually can't believe almost 20% of the people who voted would kill everybody else on this planet for the sake of themselves. To me this seems disgusting....

I rather stay alive. Maybe some nice aliens will create a human female and we'll start humanity all over again. Anyway, there's no point in killing myself.

If you kill everyone else you kill yourself -- not right away, but canned food only lasts so long. You'll almost certainly die well before your allotted time is up.

So you die either way.

You'd have to be really selfish/cold to choose your own life at the expense of billions.

Save the human race.
It would be pretty dull being the only one left alive. Guess I'd last a few days before finishing myself off anyways.

Way to take the recent "kill yourself or however many people threads" and turn it up to 11. For such an extreme circumstance, I would obviously choose to die to let the other 6 feckin' billion live.

It's a stupid question, we die either way.

No single human can survive, the only difference between the two options would be death now, or death in two weeks, when the clean water runs out.

You or 5% of the human race would be a question demanding more thought.

I second this.

No matter how selfish or selfless you are, this is a hard question.
As I've already explained, you have to. There is no choice. You have, say, a minute or so to choose. You can't leave the room until you've made a choice.
Magic :D

Still, there is no limit to the time you have to post of the forum poll.

this isn't really a choice. it's more like a choice between you dying now, and you dying a little later. most (98%) of people lack the skills needed to survive without societal infrastructure. Besides, if you were all alone long enough you'd go crazy anyway.

To instantly extinguish the lives of over 6.5 billion people so you can live out the rest of your natural life (which without medical care is not really that long) would take a truly insane, twisted individual. And it unnerves me a bit that over 20% of the people to take this poll so far have chosen that option.

Admittedly, the 'kill everyone to save the natural world' angle makes a bit more sense, but indiscriminately wiping out every human that exists, or ever will exist, is still a psychotic idea.
