My parents are the type of people who are instantly dismissive of gaming, calling it a "pointless waste of time".
...

I don't even need to fucking post.
But I will - because YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

my parents thoughts about gaming: "Stop playing that stupid game you lazy good for nothing and go cut the grass and get a job!" pretty much sums it up.

my mum has never been a fan of games. my dad used to play wolfenstein and i think he played starcraft but i think as my brother and i got older like 5 and 6 we hogged the computer so he lost interest in it. now nearly 20 years later he just doesnt have the time, patients or hand coordination to play modern fps

my dad cant complain too much about gaming cause he makes plastic models, like tanks and stuff and can you really make any difference out of hours spent playing games or hours spent making tanks?

Er...sorta.
My dad loves Civilisation.

My parents play the Civilisation games almost exclusively but they've never given me grief for gaming. I don't think most people get shit for gaming to be honest, you get shit for gaming too much. Big difference.
OHMY, we have so much in common!

[sub]also, my mother is completely obsessed with Farmville[/sub]

My parents are neither really overly against or suportive of gaming, which is understandable

however thankfully they have no controll over my choice of entertainment

Well, my mother is generally cautious about gaming. My father, on the other hand, is a god in Red Alert 2 and Generals.

My mum doesn't touch Farmville but she does like that Windows XP expanded games pack, she'll play anything casual you put in front of her. She's very good at Civ 2 though, I need to get her onto something more complex because over the years she's worn a groove into that game. She's figured out the optimal way to approach the game and all of her games play out the same way, it's a pity she didn't dig Alpha Centauri's aesthetic but I may get her Civ 5 in a year when they finally upgrade that PC.
Haha yeah, casual games too. That's totally awesome though man!
But yeah, CIV5 is SO damn easy to pick up. My Dad complained about it being to simple, it brought a tear to my eye:']

I voted no, despite my Dad playing Flight Simulator, and my parents trying to be as positive about gaming as people who have no interest in playing them can be.

That reminds me, I need to get them to play Flower. If any of you haven't, then please do so as soon as possible (unfortunately only through PSN, but mbe you know someone with a PS3). Only $10, very universal game (which is why I think even my parent should be able to enjoy and appreciate it), and it's even better than Portal!

They never really got it, so I wouldn't say that they were enthusiastic about it, but they didn't really do anything to stop me either

My parents probably wasted more hours on WoW than most here, never really been into high end raid content though. Our family raiding nights only went through the little stuff like Kara and Naxx.

Me Mum also is the only one in our family to actually complete the Oblivion main story(Cause we all fucked around and she used the old "arrow" glitch to cheat(100% chameleon)) and she had a short stint in Minecraft.

My dad was the one that got me and my Brother into gaming.

So my parents are pretty Pro-gaming.

My parents have been selectively supportive of videogames. That is to say they do accept them as a popular form of entertainment but find some things a bit too crazy for their liking. For example my mother really doesn't approve of violence, like most mothers don't and finds needless violence to be one of the drawbacks of videogames, for example Manhunt would disgust her.

However my mother definitely approves of games like Monkey Island and Portal, puzzle games in general really, for stimulating brain activity. She also liked the Mega Drive era of gaming and insists that was the best games system we had with games like Sonic and Lion King, simple in their vision, brilliantly realized and reasonably challenging platformers that weren't violent. I kind of agree in saying that the mega drive was one of the best consoles I've ever had.

Moving onto my dad, he's been more hands on with videogames since I was a child, I'd say since the PS2 onwards though he's been detatched from gaming, suffice to say age has caught up with him and he no longer has the reflexes to play fast paced titles.

My dad introduced us to gaming by taking us to arcades as children and letting us play Beast Busters and the X men arcade etc. My dad also did all the research before buying us a games system, he was also a great guy for getting involved as I played Lion King, that game had a steep difficulty/learning curve and he was there to make sure I didn't give up, so yeah pretty swell dad when I think about it.

His most recent gaming experience before he kinda dropped out was the Ace Combat series on PS1, he really got into those games and often played them with us.

Anyway sorry for the wall of text but it's a good topic and I like to see how parents use videogames to connect with their children and help their growth.

They are mostly neutral, but have a rather old-school view on gaming, often asking me to "finish the level" or asking "Did you win?".
