Yes, trope does rhyme with rope. I just mention it because of the aforementioned Creative Writing tutor who apparently managed to see an accent which didn't exist in the word.robotam said:god, rember that "Magic e" video from primary school.MelasZepheos said:Meme.
Meem
Yeah I got a lot of those when I was 5. Sort of stuck with me, that and 'i before e except after c.'
EDIT: Also, on a related note, 'Trope' is preonounced 'tro-puh.' Not 'trop-ee'. I had a university level Creative Writing tutor pronounce it 'trop-ee' for nearly three weeks before I finally brought in both an English and a French dictionary to show him that it is not prnounced with a long e on the end. Just because it is French does not mean you have to try and say it 'Frenchly.' I suspect even the French pronounce it 'meem' because there are no accents in it.
Also, does trope rhyme with rope? 'Cause if not, my mind might expload.
OT: I was unaware people pronunced Me-Me or Ma-May. It's Meem.
You spelt it 'Tro-puh', as opposed to 'tr-ope'. That's where the issue isMelasZepheos said:Yes, trope does rhyme with rope. I'm with you, buddy. I weep for the species.catalyst8 said:A lot of the comments in this forum have quite literally made me shake my head in despair. Admittedly meme is very often used incorrectly by people who want to seem educated, but who are obviously too stupid to find out the correct meaning of the word (a prime example is 'Internet meme').
For anyone genuinely interested in understanding the meaning of the word I suggest Richard Dawkins' The Selfish Gene & Susan Blackmore's The Meme Machine. Dawkins coined the term at the end of The Selfish Gene more as an hypothesis than a scientific observation, & years later Blackmore expanded upon it.
People who use words without knowing what they mean (& a very good indicator of this is not knowing how it's pronounced) are contemptible, simply illustrating their own sheer ignorance.
