I like to use short range weapons. You put Spray and Pray down for the SMG, but all it comes down to is that, provided you're at close enough range before the fight starts, you'll beat out most any other weapon - and unlike the shotgun, if you miss, or if there are multiple targets, you can still take them down.
I only put that by way of an one-liner, but in fairness SMGs are generally high RoF, high recoil. low accuracy and +/- pistol-ish level damage, so their effectiveness is down to getting the most shots onto a target in as short a time as possible. I've always found it a hard playstyle to get to grips with as I can't manage burst fire, reloading or ammo management properly to be effective. The best use I've found for them is when you have enemies bottlenecked in a corridor or doorway; it's cool to just pull the trigger and seconds later, move past a pile of dead enemies...no other weapon can do that quite so well.

I also don't know how you all manage with the semi-auto ARs. They're such weird weapons I can't work out how best to use them. If I only get one shot, I'd prefer it to come from a sniper rifle barrel at range, or up close with a shotgun where it can still do good damage, even with a glancing hit to the leg. I kinda manage alright with the M308 in Payday but that's because I use it as a sniper.

Edit: There were two more games I forgot!
The first is Hitman (any of them will do). The gunplay is usually clunky (still fun for massacres :D) so I stick to my sexy, sexy Silverballers (pistols) and my fiberwire and a knife.

The other is Mass effect 3. I usually prefer the Paladin or Phalanx pistol, the Black Widow or Widow sniper or the Geth Plasma Shotgun. And when I do go with the assault rifle I usually pick the Revenant or Typhoon.
I tried the Revenant more than once, what with it being the soldier's evolved weapon in ME2, but I can't use it right. The accuracy is just terrible in the middle range where an AR ought to be best. Geth Pulse Rifle was better I think. Same low damage, high RoF but better accuracy.

I'm with you on the silverballers. Loved those (without the full-auto nonsense). Shame Absolution was so atrocious. :-\

I can't quite explain why, but I always feel some kind of satisfaction when I make kills with dual pistols.

Also, I think it just looks badass!

I love me the shotgun. Always dependable no matter what the game.

Melee is usually terrible.
Pistols can be alright, I feel incredibly classy when killing with one, but they're usually rubbish.
Smgs/machine pistols (apart from cod) have no punch.
Assault rifles are bread and butter.
Snipers either make the game too easy, or too frustrating. (same for most bows)
Explosives are fun but labour intensive (equip, set, detonate).
Flamers lack stopping power.
Miniguns slow you down too much.

Depends on the situation, but my most preferred weapons of choice are either Shotguns or Melee weapons mostly.

Machine guns or sniper rifles depending on the game. Spray and pray is all good and well, but unless that game has plenty of ammo for you to go through, that's a horrible idea. Aimed, controlled bursts will kill just about anything, and so what if they may slow me down a bit, I've still got full auto if it really hits the fan.

On that same note though, I love sniper weapons in games like Fallout where a well-placed shot can save you a fortune in ammo and healing items if you just take a moment to observe and plan out a bit.

Give me a bow and a quiver of arrows (and maybe a nice jerkin) any day of the week. I find that there's just something more refined, romantic, elegant and cilvilised about a bow. Especially when juxtaposed with those noisy firearms.

Well, I like the kind of weapon that doesn't require me to run around to have it bring death to my enemies/victims...
And preferably doesn't even require me to get away from my desk...

So... Maybe something that involves a shiny red button and mushroom clouds?
There are some of them in the Fallout New Vegas dlc: Lonesome Road... As well as in the ICBM mod for Minecraft.

Of course, something that planet destroying lasers from some kind of giant space station would be even better...
And you don't really have to worry about cleaning up nuclear waste from the planet afterwards, since there's no planet left.

Long range tactics specialist, although if a functional option for close range melee combat and stealth are present as well, I will go stab someone in the back. However since melee is often not present, it is usually a sniper/long range assault rifle and shotgun/smg/handgun combo ... bows are also nice. Also, anything that can be silenced/suppressed, will be.

Silenced pistols and Loud magnums are the coolest and most stylish of all weapons to use.

dependso n game A LOT. but as a general, if i can get away with it im a sniper/accuracy guy. of course if we go beyond the mere gaming limitation that would be the god-like powers to alter the level of perception to make them like/obey me. humans are my weapons. but from the choices ill go with sniper. i dislike meele fighting except for fantasy settings, where i always go the big bad brute simply because im a hoarder and i need to carry this low value loot.
but beside that im alawys a sniper, long range rifle or whatever like that. funny thing i hoard all explosives and whatever but never use it. i sometimes force myself to use it jut to waste this stockpile of granades or what have you.

Why, the sniper crowbar of course!

In all honesty, I would prefer using a weapon that was literally built, painted and modified for yours truly. Like a shotgun that has a scratched paint job and a unique outer look (by that I mean the outer casing completely resigned), or a pistol capable of firing sniper rifle rounds, or a laser guided flintlock, or a...

Actually, I'll just leave it at that.

I'm getting into snipy snipy weapons at the moment, but if a game offers me a crossbow I will probably end up using it exclusively.

I like melee.

But more importantly I love swords.
A sword lets me get up close and bloody with everyone.

If it's a katana ... that is awesome.

So yeah, melee ... but swords. :D

I love me some heavy assault rifles or DMR's for most FPS games and find a nice balance with that or a carbine of some kind. In Battlefield I like being 2 miles away on a hill somewhere though.

Alternatively melee!!! Axes. Axes are fantastic things because there is no faffing about to it, just satisfaction.

I always find my most satisfying kills come from semi-auto rifles, pistols, bows and melee weapons, especially axes.

shotguns for me, generally people prefer to keep their distance from people in fps games, so the tend to get really uncomftorble (sp?) when you get in their face, 870 combat <3

A well-aimed medium pistol usually gets you everywhere.
Too bad they usually make two kinds, a peashooter that mildly scares kittens and a revolver who's recoil alone takes out 3 armed men.
