I just found out that there is going to be a Hollywood adaptation of the popular anime death note and if that wasn't bad enough Zac Efron is rumoured to be playing Light.

Personally I think this film is a disaster waiting to happen, well from a fan of the anime's point of view but from the film makers standpoint it's bound to make millions.

I'm not just saying this because it's Zac Efron either I just really can't see him playing the part well. Also as far as I can see it's also being worked on by a producer of The Ring (English/American Ver.) and the Mortal Kombat Film. Which IMO were both terrible films.

I made a thread about this about a month ago. I had a quick synopsis of the confirmed script. It was absolute shit. They change Light's name to Luke and L never suspects Light (or Luke, sorry) of every being Kira.

Though, I should have seen Zac Efron being cast as him. As much as I despise the piece of shit, Light and Zac look pretty similar, though looks don't mean he's good for the part. Hollywood seems to have forgotten that you need to be able to, y'know, act in a movie. I doubt that dipshit can pull of the smartest kid in Japan with an outrageous ego.

I can only hope they cast someone as great as Zac Efron as L.

Here's a link to my thread which has the script synopsis, if you want it:

Thanks I'll link to that Thread.

Hah, not one single person has voted Yes yet...

Anyway, I say no. Simply because it doesn't seem like the right role for him. I actually didn't mind High School Musical (and don't flame me for it, I happen to live in a house where half the people liked it, half our friends at university liked it, and one of my housemates played the male lead in his school production of it some years ago). But I prefer Zac Efron in his other roles. I didn't see 17 Again, but I really want to see Hairspray and I'm definitely intending to see Orsen Welles And Me (though that's more based on my love of Citizen Kane, and Welles in general).

Anyway, I digress. My point is that Zac Efron is actually a decent actor. He got typecast with HSM and since then people denounce him because he happened to star in that. It was a job for him. That's it. And he's trying to prove himself in other roles, even if they are pretty similar, but he's proving himself slowly to be a much better actor than we give him credit for and not simply one of the current generation of 'Disney Brats'. He's moving on from Disney, which is a good thing.

However, I can't see him playing a role like Light, at least not now. Maybe in a few years if he managed to prove himself ecent in other similar roles, then potentially yes. But right now? It wouldn't work. Although I can't see a Western version of Death Note working either, to be honest (hey, very few Western live-action adaptations of popular anime series work, so it's not a slight on Death Note, simply on Hollywood in general...).

Well the asian version of the live action deathnote films wasnt that great anyway. It was good to show people who hae short attention spans and wouldnt sit through a series, but still wasnt as good. I think it maybe one of those things that it would be hard to fit it all in properly within a movie time frame.

I'm more concerned about the adaptation itself than Effron's role in it. If the script is good then he'll do a good job i would expect.

Funnily enough, I think Effron would make a great Light. He's got that insipid aura of perfection that'll make him all the more jarring when he starts toying with life and death, it'll also make him pretty convincing as the boy everyone trusts.

I actually think he's a decent-ish actor, it would be good to see him in something that isn't a Disney Mafia production.

Don't know who I'd get to play L though, my brain keeps landing on Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), he's probably got the ability to make someone who's completely freakish and charming at the same time, but he's very strongly assoicated with Harry Potter, which could make it difficult.

It's success hinges more on whicheevr git writes the screenplay though, the more they Hollywood=ise it the worse it will get.<spoiler= (spoilerific)Although I wouldn't mind them grafting and ending together from the ^proper^ ending where> Ryuk kills Light with a new ending where L wins. Everything after L's death seemed a bit tacked on. Considering how much smarter L is/was than Light I always thought a better ending would have been L forcing Light into a corner (possibly by killing him? Don't want to mess with canon too much) and then he asks Ryuk for help, which Ryuk duly gives...

Every single American remake will be fucking doomed from the start. Examples of this stupid ass shittery include:
Dragon Ball Z
Avatar TLAB
And probably Astro Boy

What the hell? L suspecting Light is Kira is part of what makes their duel of wits so compelling. Has the scriptwriter even read the manga or was he just going off a synopsis he found on t'internet?

Apparently, he didn't because if he did, he wouldn't have changed the names of the main characters. There's a significant meaning to why Light is named Light.

The entire story is completely different. No Misa, no second or third Kiras, none of the parts with the company with a Death Note, no memory loss, no Mello, no Near, and you wanna know the worst part?

[b/]THEY TOOK OUT RYUK!!!![/b]

there are already 2 (well 3 if you count L change the world) perfectly good Deathnote movies that were made in japan why does Hollywood need to make their own version. Seriously this has the American version of Godzilla written all over it, does any one remember that colossal turd? what next an American live action adaptation of Naruto?

i think i just may have doomed us all.

As a fan of the Anime... Hell No!

As a rational human being... Let's see if we can scare away those Zac Effron fans by sticking to the story, haha.

For some reason, the first person I thought of when I was thinking who would be good as L was Rupert Grint from the Harry Potter series. I don't know why, but he's got the same bags under his eyes and he's English (isn't L supposed to be English?)

If not him, then me, of course.

as a fan of the series i must ask, why make a movie where the main PROTAGONIST/VILLAIN is played by the HSM kid? Seriously the only thing they have in common is their hair looks similar half the time.

Nearly all the actors in the whole Harry Potter series are English/British/Irish, it was part of the film deal that Warner bros had to film in England and use strcitly British or European actors. There's barely any Americans in it, in fact I can't think of any.

I think Rowling deserves a medal for that, plus she only sold the film rights to WB for the existing books. Unlike so many who sell their entire soul, it means they won't be able to shill more movies and/or books when they're done.

I thought about Grint, but he can't do scary stares properly.

Not familiar with the actor other than his part as young Simon Tam in one episode of Firefly. I'll reserve judgement on the man until I have actually seen him act.
