Hopefully the script will be a bit better and what it currently in the works, according to the other thread about this, otherwise no matter how good he could be, it wont save that tripe.

But i was fine with the Japanese version already made so I'm not holding my breath.

This. It's like saying Tom Hanks would be guaranteed to suck in Saving Private Ryan because he got his start in Big.

If you were a good actor that had the chance to star in any big-name movie, you'd go for it, for the paycheck if not the fame. Just because he starred in some teenybopper shitfest doesn't mean he's unqualified to do anything else, ever.

By the way? Just because you happen to like something doesn't mean it's sacred.

Haha! now all Deathnote fans will have to go to the movie and sit next to a bunch of giggling pre-teen "twilight" girls. This makes me smile.

Oh, I assumed most of the weeaboos who liked Death Note were also High School Musical loving tweenage girls. I guess I'm wrong.

But Zac Efron isn't actually a bad actor. He just has these dead eyes and has been typecasted into souless movies.

You know what?

I'm damn impressed with Efron. He's moving on to more serious acting roles.

And what's a better "Fuck you!" to disney, than having one of their stars, you know, kill people.

Every single American remake will be fucking doomed from the start. Examples of this stupid ass shittery include:
Dragon Ball Z
Avatar TLAB
And probably Astro Boy
You forgot Speed Racer.
Thank you good sir for reminding me. But at least that film wasn't hyped up like DB or Avatar TLAB.
I thought it was hyped up as shit from all the commercials on TV.

To be clear under any other circumstances I would find this news UTTERLY disgusting and a disgrace to such an awesome show.

But I must disagree with you. Zac Efron may have been in many terrible roles but he is actually a decent actor. And to see Zac Efron slowly go insane would be such a shock to his fangirls I could laugh as they weeped. If he did take this role, I'd applaud him for taking such a bold move.

I don't think anyone's disputing his acting talent. However, he just doesn't seem to fit this role. He's not a 'Bad' actor, by no means, but that doesn't mean he is a good fit for this character.

Light Yagami is, for all intensive purposes, a bastard. He's ruthless and cruel.
Now, I've not seen Mr. Efron's recent work. But from what I have seen, he doesn't have the charisma nor the bravado to go the extra mile to save this film from the inevitable low scores it is bound to receive.

Again, he isn't 'Bad' actor. Merely one that, in my opinion, is not suitable for this particular role.

I actually think old Zac would play Light perfectly, as he's pretty good at playing boring marty sue characters, as evidenced by High School Musical.
Needless to say, I did not enjoy Death Note after you-know-who died. They were the best character by far.

I saw the Japanese movies and they where good, and I wasn't even a fan of the manga(only manga I really liked was one called welcome to the N.H.K, It's a good read and I would suggest it) but this is going to be other shit. I know Zack Efron isn't ALL bad, but they're going to change the script to type cast his ass into "High school musical: the Japanese addition with some other people that aren't Zack Efron, the one true god. HAIL HIM" This movie is probably going to stick to the plot of the books less than the second one(my brother is a fan of the series and complained a little when it didn't go like the books), but at least that one had good writing and some links to the plot.

EDIT:

If Light and Ryuk start singing and dancing Disney will be going down
I would buy the DVD, just to see them dancing to some up beat tune about Light thinking he's a god and Ryuk just singing about killing people. I would buy six DVDs.

Apparently, he didn't because if he did, he wouldn't have changed the names of the main characters. There's a significant meaning to why Light is named Light.

The entire story is completely different. No Misa, no second or third Kiras, none of the parts with the company with a Death Note, no memory loss, no Mello, no Near, and you wanna know the worst part?

[b/]THEY TOOK OUT RYUK!!!![/b]

the only role that douche should ever play is that of a very minor character that dies in a very embarrassing way. That's what he gets for bringing musicals into the mainstream again...

Welcome to the NHK is my absolute favorite anime and I really hope Hollywood doesn't do a movie on that. Though I think it might turn into a good Live-Action series (as it's extremely realistic), though it would be the same thing in 4 different mediums at that point with less drug use in every medium change.

As long as he doesn't break out into song, he might pull it off. He has all the physical traits so I will give him the benefit of a doubt and I encourage everyone else to do the same. At least Miley Cyrus isn't cast as Misa, imagine her playing a bubble headed pop star.
