Nirvana.

Sorry, but I think they're overrated.
I completely agree with you. Also all the other bands that followed and tried to be like Nirvana, they're all horrible.

"Bland, boring, and lifeless..."
i tend to listen to them when i'm frustrated and pissed.

it's really a mood band (for me)

I can't seem to really enjoy Metallica, which, if I am to believe what people say, is a sin to Metal-enthusiasts. Not just the later songs, but also the earlier ones, they just don't appeal to me.

Because I don't listen to them, I don't recognize the songs which is rather amusing when someone lets me listen to a random band on his iPod.
"Hmm, I don't seem to know this one."
-"Master of Puppets... By Metallica."
"Oh."

How do you hate a band "on principle"? That doesn't even make sense, that just sounds like you're hating something just for the sake of hating it.
It makes perfect sense. While I don't hate the music of the likes of Nirvana and Sonic Youth, I hate them for what they stand for. Sonic Youth for totally undermining the riot grrrl movement and everything it stood for, and Nirvana because of the members. Both individually and as a whole. The band was Kurt Cobain, let's not piss around the bush. Dave Grohl doesn't recognise this and thinks he has some kind of god given right to be a dick because Kurt picked him out of a lineup to play the drums in his band. He has no talent and Courtney Love had more input into Nirvana than he did. Kurt Cobain was bareable, if only just, but the second he shot himself (AND YES HE DID SHOOT HIMSELF) it was like every Nirvana fan took leave of their senses and blamed everyone but Kurt for his death because he was the second coming and anyone who doesn't agree is clearly an idiot. He was fucking depressed, let it go.
Please, edify me. I've heard Sonic Youth tunes that quickly grew stale b/c they never went anywhere, they were more sonic ideas than songs. And I've heard complete thought-cum-songs out of them that blew me away. At the heart of the band is the husband-and-wife team so tell me, how is Sonic Youth even considered "riot grrrrrrrrrrrrl?" They sounded to me like Nirvana on acid, with a great deal more creativity and an occasional distaste for finishing a song. They didn't sound any more riot grrl to me than the go-go's. But maybe you know more than me. I never cared much for the Bikini Kill - Huggy Bear - Bratmobile music, some of it sounded interesting at first but there was never enough to keep my attention. It was all so - stark. I do love me some Sleater-Kinney, though, and not just because all of their drummers have been hot. They were a lot less narrow than some of their counterparts. Also: Le Tigre makes me want to pull my ears off.

I don't think we really know all that we would like to know about Nirvana. Kurt definitely was the creative leader and I can't stand Dave Grohl as a drummer (most overrated ever, including Lars Ulrich), but I don't think Courtney Love had anything to do with the band creatively. In fact, I look at Love the exact opposite of the way I look at Grohl. I love her early music, but I've never seen anything to indicate I'd like her personality at all. David Grohl always comes across as one of the nicest, coolest dudes you'll meet, but his band has always sucked...until their last CD. Hate to say it, and I couldn't believe it myself at first, but I love their new CD. Overplayed? Yes, but good.

Damn, am I rambling! Anywho...

I love U2, love Green Day (before/after they dropped the accoustic guitars), love Metallica's return to form last year, love Nirvana.

Does someone want to explain why the assumption that this man (Bono) who feeds so many starving children is an egomaniac? Anyone?

Most current popular music sounds horrid to my ears.

Particularly at the moment we've got Kanye Wests Down's syndrome rapping voice (no offense to anyone with Down's syndrome)

Too right, they're talented kids but the whole purity ring thing is stupid. It's a good Christian symbol but they're using it to sell records.
Christian rock sells for some reason, and also those guys seem make VAlerie GINAstri's "business" all soft and tingly <_<

Caps are obviously meant like that... in case the reborn retarded 11 year old walks by :/

Every time I hear a song from these pricks or a themesong from HSM 1, 2, 3 or 15^38.223 it makes my blood curdle, my eyes spout blood, and my anus to unevidently selfcombust, effectively leading me to the nearest surgeon who will have to try and save my horror riddled body and mind.

Yes, I hate them. It may be biased bs suck this hate, but hate nontheless :)
Some Christian Rock is actually good, and by some I mean Flyleaf and by Flyleaf I mean it's a female voice that isn't commonly used in Alternative, so it feels fresh. Plus it's more uplifting then what I am used to.

You say you hated the band on principle, but as you just said, Kurt "was" the band, so by saying that you're arguments about Grohl and Love are irrelevant. So you must by your own admission hate Kurt Cobain "on principle" which confuses me.
What? I just explained why I don't like Nirvana ffs. "While I don't hate the music of the likes of Nirvana and Sonic Youth, I hate them for what they stand for." As I said, Nirvana stand for being melodramatic, they introduced Grohl to the world and they were the first band to have fanboys. Whining little things that bleed out of their collective vagina any time anyone says anything negative about them. They made some good tunes though. Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle for example.
Sorry, I'm being too harsh on you. Your profile says your from Portsmouth and I know they don't teach literacy at either end of the M27. :p
Beatlemania, anyone?

10 immediately came to mind as I hear snippets of their tunes during my morning commute 5 days a week. We listen to KISS FM on the way into work because we like the morning show (Jackie & Bender) but I can't stand ANY of the music they play (and my wife generally doesn't like my music but since she's driving she gets to pick the tunes) and they're featuring all of these bands for their annual "Jungle Bell Bash" concert:

All American Rejects, Cobra Starship, All Time Low, We the Kings, Hey Monday, Cash Cash, Push Play, The Maine, The Providence, Amber Pacific

I don't know how popular they are as aside from "All American Rejects" I haven't heard of the other 9 bands but as I don't listen to radio-bands they may be scorchingly hot.

And is it just me or do the all look alike (and I swear they all sound alike; I can't pick out which band is which when they play the promo clips) in these promo pics?

http://www.kissfmseattle.com/pages/jingle_bell_bash.html

Except for "Hey Monday" who I think has a chick in the middle but then looking at "The Maine" I think that's the same chick in the middle. And that one bald dude who I think is just a roadie who was standing too close when the camera took the pic.

The Beatles are mainly what come to mind now. Any ****** alternative rock band. True rock bands rocked, i.e. the Rolling Stones and Guns 'N Roses in the good days.

Very clever, but you never said that you hated them for being melodramtic or that they introduced fanboys, you said you hated them for the members (which contradicts what you said about Kurt "being" the band). What you're doing is confusing literacy with the ability to read minds.

Oh, and pro tip, never insult someone's literary skills with a grammatical error in the very sentence with the insult in it.

Edit: I grew up in Aldershot, not Portsmouth.

No stereotypes please. Although, I do agree about those bands.

To add to the list: Nearly every band. Especially Kings of Leon.

First of all, Le Tigre aren't riot grrrl. They just have Kathleen Hanna in them so that's what people class them as. Sleater-Kinney were just about the only band of the movement that sang properly. Kathleen from Bikini Kill could sing really well, just chose not to.
But my point was, Sonic Youth and Hole first appeared when the riot grrrl movement was going strong. Positive feelings of equality and attempting to make people listen to difficult issues such as rape, eating disorders, woman subordination etc. What the media reported was a different matter but whatever, it was positive.
Sonic Youth and Hole weren't riot grrrl, but they both had the chance to get the emotion across to a bigger stage and make a real difference. Hole... did for a bit. Then Courtney ran out of money. Sonic Youth, or rather Kim Gordon, represented everything Bikini Kill and Bratmobile were against. They were so fake and transparent, their songs were nice little grunge affairs, but then Kim would mention something about feminism and it was like... show it in your actions. Such a fake.

As for Courtney, allegedly, she help Kurt write a lot of the songs. Heart Shaped Box I think is an example.

Fan service for all you haters of the popular(kings of leon, red hot chile peppers) especially when there are much much worse musicians out there, and especially those who still use words like "faggoty:"

I gotta say I can't stand The Beatles.
I'll grant you this one. I respect the Beatles greatly, however I can't stand to hear them. Some of their songs are even good if they aren't the ones performing them (Elenor Rigby is awesome when played by Godhead, but by the Beatles it is painful).

Another band I hate is the Gorilaz. I can't see how they got so popular. Even bands like Avenged Sevenfold are not in my list of favorites.

How can AS be that popular when bands like Turisas are still niche. Some people make me sad.

I heard that Kurt wrote heart shaped box about courtney's vagina. That's heresay, though. Sonic Youth has quite an expansive catalogue, so you could listen to one album and think it's trash, and hear another one and absolutely love it. I don't think it's fair, however, to call them sellouts, as I've never heard anything like it except for later bands that mentioned them as an influence. I do agree regarding Hole - a friend used to refer to their big MTV "comeback" as Fleetwood Mac part deaux.

As far as riot grrl music as a whole is concerned, I'm really not that interested, though I would like to see more talented women in rock and not just another hot bassist here and there (though I'd love to hear more vocals out of Paz Lenchantin). I am a fan of the yelps and the Joan Jett growl, I think that's about the sexiest thing in any form of music, a very big reason I'm a fan of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and latter-day Brode Dalle stuff.

all kinds of metal and heavy/hard rock, i prefer more upbeat and happy music, that's why i like rap cause it's generaly fast and uptemo whilst not being to heavy (even if it's not always happy)
