Exactly when have the Beatles been unpopular? Didn't a movie, "Across the Universe", just come out a couple years ago that is entirely about Beatles songs? Also, Beatles Rock Band, anyone? I'm just saying they're hardly considered an underground act these days and haven't been since the 60s.
They weren't considered an underground act in the 60s either.... I'm sure you know that and that was simply a grammatical issue, but seriously - The Beatles are the single most popular band of all-time; the only difference is they wrote really fucking good music, unlike most mainstream bands today.

Personally, I don't hate all popular music, I just think there is a lot of music out there which is far superior to most things being played on the radio today. That being said, and I know this is somewhat unrelated to this thread, but I absoloutely HATE it when people say "I hate all new music, there's just nothing good anymore, blah blah blah". Those people are full of shit, and need to look harder.

Because it sucks. For a week, every time I got into a car with my mom or sister, I literally heard the same three songs every time. That Lady Gaga song really makes me want to stab myself in the eyes with a fork. I probably find "popular" music annoying as hell since I've been listening to metal and punk for the past 11 years.

Oh, and the fact that I heard a guitar in maybe 1 out of 10 songs...

Because people tend to be so pretentious and ignorant.

Have heard:
"I really used to like that band, until it got so popular"
so many times, it's just sad.

I don't care, if the music is popular or not. I'll know by myself, if I like it or not.

right im the kinda guy that listens to pretty much anything...from Beyonce...to Hollywood Undead...30 Seconds to Mars...to Westlife and i see posts where people are harrasing popular music, and i hear people talking about it's like its another plague.

i wanna know...y people hate it, i mean some singers get accused of being a fake artist (because they dont write their own material bla bla bla) but they acctualy do, Alexander Burke for example (winner of X-factor 2009) even stated that her songs have come from her diary. yet she gets accused.

i just want to know why people hate the popular type of music, not just because they don't write their own material...i want more reasons cause that reason has been done to death =P
because my friend, they want to be differant from everybody else some of them, others mearly want to hate stuff they don't find good, i don't bother them unless they bother me.

EDIT: something im noticing here, i said popular music and most of you refer to "pop" lol =P hehe something tells me people have lived in the dark and not shoved the charts on have they =P
this however i take umbridge with, pop, is short for POPular, pop music therefore is POPular music, and thus, no matter what their professed genre sufficiantly mainstream and successful musicians and singers are pop. at least by all logic they are

I even said to my classmates at the time "Just wait 'til you're 18 and you start going out clubbing, you'll love this mindless 'crap' then.' And lo, was the prophecy fulfilled.
Um no, I still hate it, now I just have to listen to it more often.
I'm confused, why do you have to listen to it more often?

Usually when I don't like something I stay away from it.
Because if one clubs, then one must hear the music in the club. I wasn't referring to listening to it on purpose.

Wow, it took ten posts to actually get it right? Wow guys, we used to be smarter than this.
I honestly can name far too many people who now refuse to listen to Muse be because they did a song for twilight and now they've been ruined by "the mainstream".
So is it not possible to just not like it? judging by this thread it looks to me that most people like to seem edgy by hating on people who have an opinion other than "the mainstream"
It is [i/]possible[/i], however the people who honestly don't like it are horribly outnumbered by those who don't like the mainstream, or people who just don't like it but feel a need to vocalize it so they feel indivdualistic.
By the same logic you could say that some people like something merely to fit in. Why can't people just let other people have their own opinion.

(Hope you don't take this as an attack, I'm just having a conversation)

The reason I hate popular music is because those cheapskates actually care about being corporately succesful and topping the Billboard Charts, and because they are high overrated and there are far more talented bands.

But I feel more strongly about the first one, music isn't supposed to be about chart rankings and getting meaningless awards, it's about the [HEADING=1]MUSIC[/HEADING].

There's plenty of music that is popular that is also great...
But popular in the proper in the commonly used sense... It was fine the first time. Then it was rehashed into trash, and then that trash was again rehashed.
In the end, it's all the same. The same lyrical themes, the exact same song structure, the same chord progressions, etc...

Anything popular IMO has either almost no inspiration to the music, or is a huge jackoff to their own popularity.

I don't like it because I want to be edgy and alternative. For that is the only reason there is for disliking it regardless of the fact we don't act as some hive mind.

Anyway on topic and not taking the piss out of the people who state it's to be cool and edgy:

Because it's manufactured generic tosh, written for the sole purpose of making money by record companies, fronted by uninspiring corporate shells who generally use voice enhancers, and don't actually play any instruments, instead being generated by synthesizers.

You should be passionate about music, I mean sure who doesnt want to make money from it, but it should never be done for the sake of money.

Oh and for the whole Beatles thing: They are VASTLY different from pop music today, for a start none of today's bands will be remembered, nor will they sell a significant amount of records. The Beatles changed the face of rock and it's offspring for ever, for they wrote amazing music, they were great musicians and they will likely be the best selling band of all time for many centuries to come. It's a shame that people cannot see that you can still be popular if you take the time to write great music, but instead people settle for rubbish.

Y'now what? I think you're saying that to be edgy and alternate. Especially here, where we're all Geeks/Nerds, and as a general rule of thumb we don't like pop music (stereotypically), In fact I sincerely doubt the number of people who actually like pop music here would be above the 10% mark. What is it with you people who think that people hate stuff to be cool, when did we all start function as a hive mind, and not be allowed to have our own opinions because it's viewed as "trying to be cool and edgy"? you may be easily influenced to go with the flow and do whatever the rest of the flock does, but I sure as hell aint.

I don't hate it, that would imply strong feelings for it, I nothing it. It's literally an uncomfortable truth that I sweep under the rug and ignore, not because of hate, at the most it's mild dislike.

Why do I mildly dislike it? I used to be a lyricist, I can tell what cheap tricks they've used to make the lyrics SOUND good, when they're just blank and soulless. Music that I like is basically poetry in tune.

Pop music has to die that's all. As David Draiman would say *clears throat*: Come on! Cant you just leave it alone, it doesn't have any soul! Just make a thing of your own and stop pretending to know.. As the countless numbers hunger for world wide renown, all the pimping sons of plunder will role up their sleeves! all searching for the answers they don't even care to know!

I suppose people can like mainstream media to seem cool although I think it's a lot more rare. Listening to mainstream music doesn't precisely make one popular neither does listen to obscure stuff make one un-popular (some people probably believe that listening to obscure stuff makes one seem like a connoisseur of music.. which I guess can be cool). So I doubt that people listen to mainstream to seem cool. What seems to be "cool" (as of right now) is A) claiming to know a band before someone else did B) being too amazing to listen to that kind of stuff. I never said people can't have their opinion, just that listening to unpopular music doesn't make someone awesome and neither does listening to popular music.

Its just a coincidence that if music is "popular" today its shit.

And most of it is just indie trash/pop rubbish, give me proper metal over it anyday.

Most of the really popular stuff, to be honest, is just really bad. It's noisy, it's annoying, and I can't manage to just ignore it because of how damned obtrusive* it is. Popular rock is mostly scream music with terrible lyrics(at least around here) and popular rap is just the same really annoying song over and over. Pop music...ugh. Mostly bad bands with terrible lyrics and really annoying, loud beats in the background.

The problem isn't that they don't write their own music and that the lyrics are unoriginal, the problem is that it just doesn't sound good. I'm not the kind of person who spits at people for liking it, but I really don't enjoy it myself and find it really hard to just ignore.

*Not the word I'm looking for, but as close as I can get because I forget the word I'm looking for. ^^;
