I don't like popular music because I think it makes me edgier to agree with the millions of people that hate the Jonas Brothers.

Apparently it is impossible to either like or dislike something in this world.

If you like it then people accuse you of no taste.

And if you dislike it people say that you only dislike it because it's popular.

I, for one, hate a lot of new music. And my hate is totally justified. How is it justified? Because todays mainstream "popular" music is of a certain sound, and I have always disliked that sound. When Beatles becomes popular again, and they will I'll start to like what is considered popular music.

It's all about the times. Currently what is considered popular isn't my thing.
Exactly when have the Beatles been unpopular? Didn't a movie, "Across the Universe", just come out a couple years ago that is entirely about Beatles songs? Also, Beatles Rock Band, anyone? I'm just saying they're hardly considered an underground act these days and haven't been since the 60s.
They're not exactly playing at MTV, are they?

This thread is about the MTV-definition of "popular music". At least that is how I grasped it.
Nobody's playing on MTV these days though ;). Plus, the Beatles aren't exactly releasing music videos so there's nothing to play on MTV. Their music shows up in advertising all the time these days though, and everyone still loves them. However, I do agree that they aren't exactly MTV popular (no VMAs or anything). The fact they have their own Rock Band game is a good statement to their popularity.

That was only after T-Pain. See, that guy comes on the radio with an auto-tune and makes millions of dollars so everyone else thinks that he's popular because he used an auto-tune but really he was popular because he sounded different. Ironically, everyone tried to sound the same as him in hopes to get money. It's like how nearly every unpopular 80's metal band sounds like a crappy Metallica rip-off, nearly every unpopular 2000's "artist" sounds like a crappy T-Pain rip-off. And his music was pretty terrible to begin with.
To be fair, Autotune has been around since at least the 80s, but I do know what you mean.

And it's funny, because T-Pain used the Autotune to get his foot in the door, but truth be told he doesn't even need it, he can sing.

Oh, I generally refer to pop music as the music of the decade. So I'm referring post 2000.

Also, a lot of pop before then was actually good.
...How old are you if you don't mind me asking? Because I remember the early 90s, for every good popular track, there were three more that were trash.

I don't hate popular music, I hate bad music. The fact that these two are becoming one in the same is a coincidence.
What I really hate is music like the Disney trash. Fourteen year old girls singing about how they loved some random guy and he brke their heart, they'll show him, grrl power, blah blah.

Popular music these days tends to include:

The Jonas Brothers,

Miley Cyrus,

......Metro Station....*proceeds to vomit*

That's why I disregard "Popular music". What's worse is that most idiots these days consider the three example I've listed above to be Rock music and I find that insulting to any fan of rock music.

They weren't considered an underground act in the 60s either.... I'm sure you know that and that was simply a grammatical issue, but seriously - The Beatles are the single most popular band of all-time; the only difference is they wrote really fucking good music, unlike most mainstream bands today.

Personally, I don't hate all popular music, I just think there is a lot of music out there which is far superior to most things being played on the radio today. That being said, and I know this is somewhat unrelated to this thread, but I absoloutely HATE it when people say "I hate all new music, there's just nothing good anymore, blah blah blah". Those people are full of shit, and need to look harder.
Yeah, that last sentence did have a little grammar hiccup. Basically I meant that they've been popular since the 60s and said popularity hasn't really waned in a significant way since then. I was not trying to imply the Beatles were ever really an underground band, especially by the time they hit the USA.

I totally agree with you last paragraph, by the way. People need to shut up about mainstream music and just enjoy the things they find elsewhere.

The reason I hate popular music is because those cheapskates actually care about being corporately succesful and topping the Billboard Charts,
Well you may aswel hate all muscians if you hate music that was made by bands who want to get the moneyz. Any musician who tells you they don't want lots of money is chatting shit. Infact, anyone who tells you they don't want lots of money is chatting shit.

I understand hating manufactured bubblegum groups whos sole purpose is to make money (And they rarely do, bellends), but if you play music and have an oppurtiunity to cash in and you don't take it, you deserve a poke in the eye.

I play music and when I started it was just for fun, now I'm in music college and while I wouldn't dress up like a twat and sing songs about a girl I fancy but am to shy to ask out, written for me by some 50 year old women, I am still always scheming about the money. It would be fun to a badass who wipes his ass with record deals, but I'd probaly regret it when I'm 40 and living in my parents basement.

Because people look to the side, see their friend and then go "Hur hur, this music's shit, mi?right?"
It's only made funnier when it's a guy/girl they're trying to impress and quickly back pedal their way out of the situation.

Too many people are hung-up over being 'different' or sticking to a certain crowd.

Because in general, it's just not my kinda music. Even if it wasn't popular I doubt I'd like it. I mean come on, it's not like metal's unpopular, and I love that. On the other hand, I have a thing for the underdog, so ska is all the more endearing to me (It's brilliant anyway though).

right im the kinda guy that listens to pretty much anything...from Beyonce...to Hollywood Undead...30 Seconds to Mars...to Westlife and i see posts where people are harrasing popular music, and i hear people talking about it's like its another plague.

i wanna know...y people hate it, i mean some singers get accused of being a fake artist (because they dont write their own material bla bla bla) but they acctualy do, Alexander Burke for example (winner of X-factor 2009) even stated that her songs have come from her diary. yet she gets accused.

i just want to know why people hate the popular type of music, not just because they don't write their own material...i want more reasons cause that reason has been done to death =P
because my friend, they want to be differant from everybody else some of them, others mearly want to hate stuff they don't find good, i don't bother them unless they bother me.

EDIT: something im noticing here, i said popular music and most of you refer to "pop" lol =P hehe something tells me people have lived in the dark and not shoved the charts on have they =P
this however i take umbridge with, pop, is short for POPular, pop music therefore is POPular music, and thus, no matter what their professed genre sufficiantly mainstream and successful musicians and singers are pop. at least by all logic they are
i thought that was just a different genre of music =S like R&B and stuff like that...ahh well nvm, sorry for that then.

its getting late, my brain isn't what it once was =P im aloud to be daft
s'ok my man, i'm not trying to be hostile and tiredness is something i understand all to well O_O'

You really don't listen to any type of music.

Nobody's opinion on music is correct - it's subjective - arguing over it is futile.

But I must repeat myself.

If you say 'I listen to pop mainly' or 'I listen to rock mainly' you deserve less of an opinion.

Go enjoy Symphony No. 9 (Beethoven) and then enjoy 'Sexy back' from Justin Timberlake - then my misanthropic view will accept people.

EDIT: Whatever happened to Adam And the Ants?

For me I think it's the fact that some of it is just awful, secondly it's how the 'popular' artists get idolised, where as people who have bothered to learn instruments and have genuine skill usually are relatively unknown. It's mainly the media's fault as usual.

I don't hate all music from any genre. I like some "pop", but its rare. just like country. and as for the why, people hear a few songs of a particular genre decide that they "hate" that whole genre. which is shortsighted and stupid. and they are probably just looking for something to hate because daddy didn't love them, etc, etc, etc. well suck it up, pussy. life sucks, get a fucking helmet....(((fades off into the distance, ranting)))

I listen to everything that sounds good to me and I don't care what people think of it. I prefer "Alternative" and Rock over Pop but that doesn't mean that I don't listen to it sometimes. Some of my favourite "popular" artists are Rihanna, Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Kanye West (he's a moron but his music's great) and the Sugababes.
My boyfriend's the same, he's a metal fanatic but he's also totally obsessed with Bulletproof by La Roux.

I know. I'm one of the rare pop fans on this site too. But here's the thing: a lot of people I feel dismiss pop music entirely because it's popular to hate it in a counterculture sort of way, which makes people feel unique. But here, I'm the one who's unique for liking it. Touche.

And okay, I know some people are just going to say they don't like the sound, don't get all defensive and huffy with me. I'm just as bad in that when I hear people say "I hate pop music" my first impression is that they're too pretentious and they need to get knocked off their high horse. And I'm not saying I'm right in that opinion.
