Because it's shallow music with pretensions of having deeper meaning behind it (expressing love to an unnamed partner or crush using cutesy, flowery, uninspired lyrics isn't a celebration of love, the only universal force that drives human activity more than fear. What it is is cliched, insincere bullshit).

Because it's generic and bland.

Because it's music composed specifically to appeal to the widest audience, not to express the passion or ideals of an individual.

Because most people only listen to it because the corporations who own the artists (and they do own them) spend millions of dollars popularizing them by plastering their faces on billboards and magazine articles, putting them on widely-viewed talk shows and using other methods of advertising to force their face and voice into the heads of millions of potential consumers.

Because, although a lot of it isn't necessarily terrible, most of it is mediocre and doesn't really deserve the attention it gets.

Because it takes attention away from talented individuals with real artistic potential.

Because it causes most people to think that it is the only kind of music worth listening to, creating a zeitgeist of aversion to anything artistically dynamic, slowing progress and sapping success away from much better artists.

If by popular music you mean that crap produced by Simon Cowell and his mates.

Let me think, It might be because it's all written by the same people, peoformed by a production line of singers who couldn't care less as long as their on tv.

There are so few good songs released by this production line that I can't be arsed listening to any.

I don't actually hate it, I just ignore it.

There has been a fair bit of manufactured music that's surfaced within the last few years, and it all ends up under the "pop" label. Generally, I find it to be pretty unsubstantial, and no one has anything new to say anymore. I could go into all that cal about the basic formula everyone's following in music now, the fact that no envelopes are being pushed, blah blah blah.

I'd like to think it's a personal preference, but I know that a lot of people are almost afraid of liking pop music.

Lil' Wayne, Lady Gaga, Chris Brown, etc... all their music is just... Its just not pleasing to listen to, for me at least. I mean, "I wanna take a ride on your disco stick"? Nice to know that 12 year old girls are idolizing Lady Gaga and riding peoples "disco sticks". There are VERY few modern day artists I enjoy. Maroon 5 is alright, Jack Johnson is great, Counting Crows is amazing, but for me, to find good music, head back to 1960-1980. The Beatles, the Who, Queen, Kansas, Journey, Elton John, Michael Jackson, the Eagles, Guns N' Roses... There are so many great bands and artists in that time span, I cant even name all of them. Even the 90s had some solid artists, but after 2000, rap went downhill music wise, and went up in popularity because of it. And now pop music has turned into Lady Gaga and the Jonas Brothers. Its all a fashion show at this point. To me, at least.

And again, this is all personal opinion. This is what I think. If you enjoy Lady Gaga and Lil' Wayne, fine by me. I wont respect you any more or any less. Its all about opinion.

right im the kinda guy that listens to pretty much anything...from Beyonce...to Hollywood Undead...30 Seconds to Mars...to Westlife and i see posts where people are harrasing popular music, and i hear people talking about it's like its another plague.

i wanna know...y people hate it, i mean some singers get accused of being a fake artist (because they dont write their own material bla bla bla) but they acctualy do, Alexander Burke for example (winner of X-factor 2009) even stated that her songs have come from her diary. yet she gets accused.

i just want to know why people hate the popular type of music, not just because they don't write their own material...i want more reasons cause that reason has been done to death =P

EDIT: something im noticing here, i said popular music and most of you refer to "pop" lol =P hehe something tells me people have lived in the dark and not shoved the charts on have they =P
I understand your claims. Yet before I go on to make my own, we have to lay down the term "popular music". Sure, some music is more popular than other, based entirely on how much media coverage it gets, but the thing is, be it music, literature, films, anything will get bad press if it becomes too popular. Why do you think the 90s was hell on Earth for metalheads? Because it was too popular and they started censoring it, in this case, through the more than appropiate claims of metal music being inclined towards occultism and violence. Or, as another example, why do you think Microsoft was forced out of its ridiculously lucrative monopoly? Because people didn't like it, Microsoft was too powerful (and popular) for the benefit of its competitors. In this case, the same happens. No one likes someone else getting more success than them, and specially thos that have had too much media coverage over their lives, and hence have become douchebags. We just need to get over it, there will always be people jumping in and out of the wagon. I, too, try and listen to any and everything (though I constantly keep falling back to ROCK!), and whilst this gives me a much wider musical spectrum than most, it also gives me the chance to appreciate every and all kinds of music (when it can actually be CONSIDERED music, and not most of all this new technological crap (MUSIC=MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS!!)), so my advice is that you don't form allegiances with a one genre and try to be free. That way, you'll achieve happiness and won't feel personally attacked when your favourite genre is criticized (simply, don't be a fanboy. No one likes them).

I'm just waiting till rap music gets censored for being overly explicit...
STILL waiting...
God, I want the 80s back :(

For me, I don't hate music specifically because it's popular, but rather because it's something that I already don't like and then I have to hear it over and over and over again because it's popular.

If something is popular and good though, most everyone ends up liking it. Muse, for example, is a band that I've never heard anyone say that they dislike.

People just want to be unique. If everyone listens to Beyonce, then you're just one of the millions that do. But if you listen to Tally Hall (and if you do, I love you), you're different and unique. People just hate thing that are popular for some reason. It's actually not very cool to hate something just because it's popular because some of it is actually not that bad.

Honestly, though, the bands you listed I don't really like. Not because they're popular, it's just that their music isn't the greatest in my opinion.

Really, there is nothing more to it.
I would say that the Killers are a popular band. I mean, my dad knows who they are.
Do you want a banana? Peel it down and go mmmm-mm-mmm-mmm?

I listen to a variety of stuff, I have some Kelly Clarkson, Sugarbabes, 50 Cent, Lacuna Coil, Slipknot, Killswitch...

But my main loves are Utada Hikaru, numerous J-Rock bands and a LOT of video game soundtracks (All from RPGs :p FF's, Eternal Sonata, Chrono Trigger, Fable, Infinite Undiscovery etc etc)

I find I get sick of it rather quickly, which leads me to feel it has no depth. I actually like pop music and listen to it a lot, but there's hardly any pop songs from 5 to 10 years ago that I would want to listen to today. Whereas there are plenty from other genres.

It needs to cater to everyone. It cannot be edgy, cannot make you think about the status quo, cannot have anything a soccer mom or a conservative dad would consider odd. Alternatively it cannot have a deeper meaning to it, because people can be dipshits who don't understand anything beyond celebrity gossip, so it actually relies on being "edgy" despite a lack of content.

So it results in plain, mediocre, pointless garbage.

The Beatles were arguably the most popular band in the europe and the US for a time. The Beatles were also pretty out there in terms of the views and some of their lyrics for the time. Same with Bob Dylan.

Times were different back then.

i'll always acknowledge that they have a great voice (if the case)

but i can't listen to lady gaga with a straight face.
she might do good with better songs,it's not all about rhythm sometimes you need good lines too.

but i like Linkin Park that's popular (i think)

There are really only two genres of music that I try to avoid, Pop (referring to Poppy music: Britney Spears, etc.) and Rap. Though occasionally there will come along a song that I generally enjoy.

My main problem with both genres is that everything and everyone has been edited over by computers countless times. So for example, in Rap, a 40-something year old man can end up sounding like a 13 year old girl. And to me it just sounds so obnoxious and terrible, and always leaves me with a headache.

My second problem is with the lyrics. In Pop, the songs always seem to have something to do with love, or bein' hot or somethin' along those lines. But at least you'll find variety every once in a while with Pop. In Rap, lyrics can range from sex, to killing, to talkin' shit about other rappers.

I truly don't understand why both genres of "music" are so popular.

P.S. No one flip a shit sayin' that I have bad taste in music or somethin' stupid like that! I said at the beginning of this little rant that every once in a while there will come along a song that I generally enjoy. So just read people!

Theres something tacky about a lot of it- so much of it really sounds the same that it gets annoying when you realize people are stealing so much for pop music. Then there's other music that's just so repetitive that you wonder why it's so popular- then you realize its because it is so easy to get it stuck in your head- see Black Eyed Peas' I Gotta Feeling.

A lot of music out there that is popular is actually good, though. Personally, I don't mind things like Taylor Swift or there was a time when Lupe Fiasco was on the airways a lot.. and I think he's amazing

But I think that most people don't like it because they like their own music and don't like it when theres a saturation of music they dont like constantly being played and awarded around them

Because entertainment with widespread popularity tends to pander to the lowest common denominator.
