The reason I hate popular music is because those cheapskates actually care about being corporately succesful and topping the Billboard Charts, and because they are high overrated and there are far more talented bands.
But I feel more strongly about the first one, music isn't supposed to be about chart rankings and getting meaningless awards, it's about the [HEADING=1]MUSIC[/HEADING].
The whole problem with this way of thinking is that you believe that these bands are successful because they care more about being successful and topping billboard chats. Is it not possible that these are just fortunate bands, that happen to be making music that appeals to a lot of people currently?
I'm sure their are opportunists in the mainstream music world, bands and singers who had the foresight to know exactly what was going to make it big, and the idea to exploit that understanding. I'm also sure that a lot of these bands simply were making the right music at the right time at the right place.
And just because a band gives a shit about doing well, is there anything wrong with that. Don't you sorta want the bands you love to be able to continue making music?
I've played with a lot of bands over a lot of years. I've seen countless really good bands fall apart because they couldn't afford to sink money into touring the country (without any sort of promise on a return on that cash), and had to get real jobs. If any of these bands ever got a good label deal from a label that wouldn't fuck them over, the chance for the entire country to hear their music, and being assured the ability to continue making music, I'd be as happy as I could be for those guys.
