Portal 2 - DLC Backlash

Valve has released a product that a lot people aren't happy with. That is all.

I think people are quite happy with the game, just not the completely optional and useless DLC that no one is making them buy.

You, like all the other valve defence force commandoes ITT, just don't get the point. It shouldn't BE DLC. When you buy a game, you should have everything, not get a 'surprise! we didn't give you the full content of the game' message.

However, you're complaining about something that is the absolute height of inconsequential. Okay, you might dislike the practice on principle, but you can't possibly think that it's actually an issue for enjoyment of the game, can you? They're a few totally pointless hats.

The reason why I'm miffed about the store is not only because it was underhanded and came right the fuck out of nowhere but it's because Portal 2 is less than a day old/

I was willing to let it go for TF2 because of the fact that they've spent years updating the game for free and with no profit in return, I was willing to see them get paid for their hard work.

This is blatant money grabbing douchebaggery.

It doesn't really detract from my overall enjoyment of such a fantastic game but it's more the principle. We have to backlash the early beginnings of withholding content that should be on the disc I pre-ordered before it grows and becomes so much worse.

I hear everything in the Portal 2 store can be unlocked through normal gameplay..until someone can lend credence to that statement then I will remain slightly miffed but if I'm proved wrong I will withdraw my complaints.

Day 1 DLC?

If you had the time to make it, then it ought to be included on the sixty fucking dollar disc they just released. Of course it's going to piss people off when you need to pay more money for all the functionality that should have been released at the store.

I want unlockables and expansion packs back, not fucking DLC. It's more of a headache than it's worth.

YES. The very reason why "Day 1 DLC" deals are BULLSHIT. Agreed, mate.

EDIT: Doesn't anyone remember the days you'd get all this stuff for free? Play DMC3 again and watch all the outfits, missions, and difficulties you unlock.
"It's just fluff!" evolves into "It's just extra missions!" which in turn evolve into "It's only a few epilogue missions!"
For every excuse there's more leeway given to companies to screw you over more and more. I don't think a game should suffer because of this, but I do think the company responsible should be whacked on the nose with a rolled up news paper.

EDIT 2: And if it wasn't obvious, NO I DO NOT THINK PORTAL 2 SHOULD BE REVIEW BOMBED. If they are legitimate reviews, sure. Give them. If not, then of course I don't condone giving a bad review! You're marking the game, not the company. If the game isn't bad but the business strategy is then give a fair review but explain your anger at Valve or whoever. Don't tarnish the scores of a game just because the creators were dicks. Send angry letters (one per angry person please), mention it after the review, and tell others. Don't attack a game, especially a good game, because it's creators douche the doucheness of douchebag-town....if you believe that.

You do realize that out side the gaming industry, optional extras are not a new thing, right?
Look at modern phones, you can buy all sorts of extra headsets, extra memory, other covers, hell; even ringtones.

When I buy a phone, I don't expect to get all the bluetooth products with it. I don't see why I should get the biggest memory card with it for free.

The issue is that this is all day 1 DLC. The TF2 stuff was added later, that's excusable. This isn't.

What they did in TF2 with the store is the exact same thing. I don't care when it came out (I know that it wasn't there at day one) but if you don't have a problem with what happened with TF2 why would you have a problem with this? There is no content here at all, and although I do agree that this is kind of a bullshit move coming from Valve, stupid extra multiplayer skins should NOT detract from peoples enjoyment of the game.

This isn't DLC, it's fucking skins. Get over it.

Those are more like external peripherals as opposed to being functions blocked from the core device.

A more appropriate analogy would be certain applications on your phone being blocked until you pay a fee to have the block lifted, this DLC is way less intrusive than that, granted. But again, it's more principle than anything.

Is it pointless? OF COURSE IT IS. Is it useless? Hell no, especially once they bring in trading. (I'm more annoyed the trading wasn't up on Day 1 than that the hats are.) Have a loved one who you're playing co-op with? Buy 'em a hat. The little companion cube bobble hat is what I'm thinking. Is it silly? Yes. Do people do silly, but happy things for each other? Yes, yes they do.

That's what this is about. It's vanity purchasing. Want something fun and silly? Buy it. Don't wanna pay the money? Don't buy it. It's that. Damned. Simple.

But it isn't free. If I were to buy Portal 2, which I eventually plan to despite my complaints, then it would cost me $60. That isn't free, if you didn't check, and like you I don't care about the cosmetic shit. Still, why can't Valve put all of it into unlockables instead of charging me more money? No, the completed game should be on disc ready to play.

As for two different games - that's two different games. No, they shouldn't be on the same disc because they're two different games, but Portal 2 and this expensive DLC is not two different games. It's one game split into pieces - most of it on disc, and the rest for extra money on the internet.

Do you see what I'm saying? Why, may I ask, do you want to pay $60 for the game and then all the money for the extra? If you wanted it, then wouldn't you expect all the content to be on the disc at release?

As you say yourself you buy a game called Portal2 and that's what you get for the price of the game. It's easy as that. You pay for a product you get a product. You don't pay for product + extras, product + possible extras, product + another product. 60$ covers the game called Portal 2 and nothing else.

It's not given to you as unlockable because it's not unlockable content. It's additional content they want to sell to you. Because they want to make money. That's the whole point of having a business - to make money.

Just because you buy a product does not mean, at any point, that you are entitled to anything that is not sold as that specific product by the company that sells it. It's your, and only your, choice whenever you accept such deal or not.
If you think Portal 2 without the cosmetic additions is not worth 60$ you are free to wait for a promotion/price drop and get it at a price that you consider appropriate to what the product is.

Simple.

So my question is this: is that DLC thing just the party hats TF2 had, whose proceeds will go to the Japan relief effort? If so, the people complaining can just fuck off, ideally off a bridge. If, however, this is a real DLC with real missions/characters etc, then they have a point. Day 1 DLC shouldn't exist. Ever.

It's more like a fee to change the color of your screen on the alarm function. It's really a totally pointless thing to complain about given that what you're being deprived of is essentially nothing, and a nothing that was never advertised and no one expected anyway.

I really LOVE (/sarcasm) the sense of entitlement that gaming fans have. They developed content X when I purchased Y. I deserve to get X too!

You purchased the game and only the game. You get the content included in that and only that. Any DLC, day one or otherwise, wasn't part of your transaction. Deal with it. If you dislike their business model, then don't buy the add-ons and hope that other people agree.

Interesting thought: I wonder how many people would be on here bitching if all of said DLC was included as part of a limited edition version of the game for $20-30 more dollars along with some random figure or something that costs $1 to make? Answer: they wouldn't because "it was included in the game"...for an additional charge, just like this DLC.
