The one thing I don't really understand is why Wheatley woke you up in the first place. How did he know that you were the right person to save out of the thousands of people in Relaxation?

Why was Chell able to survive on the moon?
Science, most likely. I'm no expert, but don't they say that death isn't exactly instantaneous, even when exposed to the cold vacuum of space? Though, the most likely explanation is, as follows: it's a game. But yeh, maybe the portal sucked in some breathable air from the lab, or something. Really though, I was too busy being caught unawares by the whole moon event to even think about.

Anyway, great ending. Just for the sake of asking, did anyone else find themselves somewhat inexplicably dying during the Wheatley encounter (not due to bombs)? I got a little too close to him and although it all happened rather quickly, my only guess is he actually went and crushed me with his anti-missile panels.

Going to have to run through the game again now and ideally not spend many infuriating hours trying to solve relatively simple test chambers in the most complicated way possible.

Portal 2 in its entirety,
Portal 2 had a great story (I never expected Wheatly to turn evil and almost thought the game was over) I loved the GLaDOS backstory and the exploration of Aperture,s older labs was allot of fun.
The ending made me kinda feel sorry for Wheatley (pretty much floating in space with a guy that keeps yelling him how much ass space kicks) and I really liked how you could go to the moon (sort-off).
I really liked the turret opera and almost expected the four turrets to kill me (GLaDOS still wanting revenge).
Between Still Alive and Want You Gone I would prefer Want You Gone.

How are you going to carry the C Cube without the Portal Gun? That thing sounded heavy when it fell out the door.
you can carry a regular cube without any problem,s a Companion Cube is a slightly modified Storage Cube.

I just looked it up, and apparently Douglas Adams is right. You can survive for around 30 seconds without much permanent damage (you might get the Bends or sunburn, for example), but after that you're likely to die fairly quickly. I imagine the air flowing through the portal was also helpful. Well done Valve, you win at science.

So what's the overall timeline of the Half-Life/Portal story?

I am pretty sure HL1 took place in the 80's.. Portal had kind of an 80's vibe to it. And the test chambers in the salt mines... isn't the last one like 1982 or something? That would probably mean that the Aperture Labs from Portal 1 were built not too long after that.

HL2 takes place maybe 15 years after HL1, the only real measure being Alyx and the fact that she was a baby during the events of HL1...

Portal 2 takes place some 200 years or so after HL2. So as far as we know, Gordon's story is all done and over with by the events of P2...

THEN AGAIN, remember Dr. Kleiner's "slow teleporter", in which Alyx and Gordon showed up an entire week after they entered it? Maybe that will come back into play at some point...

The one thing we know for sure is that the Portal gun itself won't show up in Half-Life.
Portal probably took place after the Combine conquered the earth (remember when GLaDOS said things have changed outside? although she could also be bluffing)
it at least took place in the early 2000,s (just look at how everything was designed)
Half-Life 1 took place during the 2000,s (A form had the date 200- on it with the last number obscured)
HL2 took place around 20 years after HL1 (Alyx looks like in her late 10,s early 20,s)

I thought the ending was quite excellent. The entire final boss battle was much more entertaining than the one from the first game.
Agreed. Though getting the False Fact core was a pain in the ass.
Really, I thought Rick was more anal to get, it only clicked after I got neurotoxined...

And it was a perfect ending to a perfect game, the entire monologue thing at the end especially "I'm in space." just kept me laughing for ages...

Funnily enough, that's what I thought of too. :) That was the time Arthur and Ford spent floating in space before they were picked up, after all.

Anyway, since I'm clearly missing something, can someone point out where we get the info from that Portal 2 is taking place a whole 200 years post-HL2?

My mind is a buzz with what the future possibilities could be. The ending was well done and despite the whole self reflection of Glados was amazing the deletion of Caroline was just amazingly wicked, exactly what she would do.

Gaben has said that Chell is going to be an important figure in the future of the whole half life series or will at least have some significance.

Loved the whole battle the ending, nothing written as an explination could do it justice.

That Space Core is just friggin amazing, he must be a really happy little guy now he managed to reach his dream :)

You know what I love about Valve. They don't explain everything. Be it for Chell and Caroline, or things like the G-Man and the Vortigaunts. Too much information would kill the mystery that makes the whole thing so interesting.

It was an amazing ending. My first reaction was "What the f**k is this?" and it grew on me.

I also loved how it came to a seeming 'end' when Wheatly got into power. Kudos to Valve for that, I was like "Wow... short... no suprises there" then Wheatley got into power and I was like "SWEEET!!"

While I found the ending a little snooker loopy, I thoroughly and whole-heartedly enjoyed Portal 2. I was like, "WTF" at the portal-at-the-moon thing, but I loved Wheatley (both good and bad - especially bad), I found the boss battle enjoyable, and I liked that this one had a "proper" ending rather than Chell just blacking out at the end. I was also very glad that GLaDOS deleted Caroline, I was afraid she'd slip too far out of character for my liking, but her deleting her restored all faith.

Great song, too. I heart Fat Turret.

All in all, I bloody love this game. And Stephen Merchant. I love GLaDOS so much, but my GOD he blew me away. He was incredible and my favourite part of Portal 2.

Well, the general theory is that when you first wake up in Portal 2, the voice says you've been in stasis for 50 days, when you wake up again it says 99999 *fizzle*, or over 273 years, at the least. The level of vegetation in the facility and the amount of general decay seems to confirm that the place has been left alone for a -very- long time.

I'd suspect that Chell( Shell) is the former body of Caroline

And about the songs Still alive was more of a surprise then part 2 everybody expected a song which is and in future retrospect will be better then how we think about it now.
I have another wrinkle for you, then.
When you see the Bring Your Daughter To Work Day science fair, the presentation all the way at the end (with the plant growing out of it) says "By Chell". That's why I believe Chell was actually Caroline's daugther.

You know, there's a theory floating around - that I support - that says that, given the lyrics to "Want You Gone", GLaDOS didn't actually delete Caroline, but just said she did. Why would she do that? Because she wanted to intimidate Chell into leaving. That's also why she suddenly seemed to forget the rapport they built up while she was PotatOS. She wanted Chell to WANT to leave, because if she didn't leave (or tried to come back), GLaDOS would be forced by the wiring of her body to make Chell test AGAIN, and she wants better for her.

My favorite game ending ever <3
Portal 2 was every bit as great as I hoped it would be, and the boss battle was just brilliant.
also, SPAAAAAACE!
One of my favorite things Glad0s says in the game is when Wheatly smashes you down the hole:
"So how are you holding up?..."
"Because I'm a potat0!" Simply priceless... :')

Another thing most people don't understand...

The moon DOES have an atmosphere. It's just a lot thinner than ours is.

It IS theoretically possible to survive for a few moments on it's surface unprotected.

Add that to the air rushing in from the portal... And you get a plausible outcome.

Also; the Chell as Caroline's daughter thing...

Mostly based on the fact that about half the words
in the turret opera are "Daughter" or "Child".

There is a lot more evidence too... Going all the way back into Portal 1 and why the sleeping pod was so small... To the teddy bear in the Portal 2 comic...
To the [REDACTED] at Chell's surname in the comic...

And of course the potato battery that was "Made by: Chell".

The fact that it's overgrown is also a bit of symbolism...
Only one potato battery survived... And it's the one made by the one surviving human.

Also, another fact people seem to miss...

The "You've been asleep for... 99999 doesn't LITERALLY mean 99,999 days.
See, when computers try to output infinity, or other really huge numbers, in binary...

Things don't work that well, and it comes out all nines.

The ending was amazing; best ending I've ever had the joy of experiencing. The battle with Wheatley was very well-done (it was unique enough to not feel like a rehash of GLaDOS in Portal 1, yet similar enough to bring back memories), and shooting a portal to the moon just made it all feel so...epic.

And then the actual ending (GLaDOS letting you go, the turret opera, the Animal King, freedom and of COURSE the companion cube) were all just incredibly satisfying. It was a very worthy ending for a very worthy sequel, and I loved both the game and the ending even more than the first Portal.

That said, I am absolutely convinced GLaDOS lied about deleted Caroline. She even mentions Caroline in the ending song....

Companion Cube survived! :)

I don't get how Chell came up with the idea of sending Wheatley to space. How was she expecting to survive it?

Anyway, the ending was awesome. I felt kind of bad for Wheatley though, but that's what he gets for those annoying Barclays adverts.

Well, when i was at that point (Ceiling broke and i saw the moon) i was just: "FUCK YEAH..., bye-bye Wheatley" totally shot it in less then a second- i wasn't expecting to get sucked down too... I was preparing to fire another portal to close this up fast and than: BAM! MOOOOON.

I loved the whole ending fight too, it was all so seemless, intuitive. Couldn't tell if it was a cutscene or if i was doing all this.

Overall i have to say: THIS is how you tell a story. (And even if Chell doesn't talk - which i normaly HATE) I cared for all (three) characters. It was funny, weird and interesting.

GREAT game overall.

In the end he talks about "you not being the first." But it sounds like he's lying.
He must be.
The floor caved in, and there was nothing deadly before that point.
The floor would have already been broken if there had been others.

The best ending ever. Absolutely blew my mind. And you know what? My brother wants to take the game back. Says it's not his "type of game". If I wasn't speechless at this comment, I would have yelled until he went deaf. He says he prefers COD. He hasn't played the single player story, only the co-op, and I think he was discouraged by the idea of teamwork and puzzle solving, and me punching him in the arm because he shifted his portals and removed the hard light bridge from under me while I was busy trying to succeed. Over and over. AND OVER. AND THEN HE WOULD LAUGH.
