Valve is kinda notorious for doing things like these, so I'm kinda not surprised.

It is still a dick move on their part though, but I wouldn't call it punishment for the rest of us that bought the game at launch.
That's kind of why I feel bad about using the word "punishment," though I can't think of a better term. Like I said, it was well worth the $50 price tag but I feel...maybe "cheated" is the right word.
Yeah I felt cheated when I heard about the sale, but it is such a good game that I almost didn't mind, almost.

Using the word "punishment" makes you sound entitled....

In other news. Eh, I already have the game. Do I care that is went on sale a few days after I bought it? Nope, I wanted the game and deemed that it was well worth what I was paying for it then.

Don't really know why people complain about these things.
Again, I can't come up with a better word. Worth the $50, absolutely.

I don't at all for paying full price and not waiting. I enjoyed the hell out of the game and still am from time to time. Co-op is fun as well and now my friends who couldn't get it before are able to afford it so I get to play with them. I am quite happy that this happened. Though I can see where you are coming from.
I will admit, I did end up taking advantage of the sale and buying the game for my father. $40 for the Xbox 360 version? Sold.

Sorry Valve (or Gamestop, whoever authorized it), but that's a bit of a dick move.
EA (Valve aren't distributing the physical copies in stores) don't have any say in the end retail price of the game. They sell to retailers at a trade rate and the retailer sets whatever price they feel is correct.

As for the $20, congratulations, you just paid the early adopter tax.
It happens in everything consumer-electronics related, in future you'll remember this and not get stung again.

Is Portal 2 unpopular in general or something? Usually the games that get this cheap this quickly are ones that the majority of people just don't care about. I don't think Portal 2 is any Call of Duty or Halo, but I've been seeing enough ads for it everywhere that I thought it was still up there in the "popular mainstream games that will stay pricey for a while" category.
It hasn't budged from the #1 top seller spot on Steam since it released, in spite of them having a few games have massive price cuts since then.

OT: Are we sure that Valve had anything to do with it? Maybe Gamestop are just trying to drum up some attention and are absorbing the smaller revenue they make for the time its on sale.

It's amazing. BUY IT NAO.

Anyway, you probably wouldn't get to see many of the new features in the demo - most of them (like paint, light bridges etc) come in around mid-game.
Some games manage to work around that. If I remember correctly, Half-Life 2's demo took you through the trainstation opening, but then jumped you to Ravenholm where you got to try out the gravity gun. I also noticed that the Batman: Arkham Asylum demo had its flow much more streamlined than the final game (much fewer cinematic "everything going to shit" moments, and just takes you through to the fights and stealth sections as soon as it can)

Given the sale appears to be Gamestop specific, it appears that it was their decision. Updated the OP to reflect this.

You heard me right, Portal 2, a game that's been out for 11 days, is already on sale for $20 off (all platforms) at Gamestop.

Source here [http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=16k-portal+2].

Now...I don't know how to feel about this. On the one hand, I think Portal 2 was worth every penny of the $45 I spent on it (pre-order discount), but I'm FURIOUS that I am indirectly being, for lack of a better word, punished for buying the game on Day 1. I'm perfectly okay with sales like this a couple months down the line, but $20 off when not even two weeks have passed? Sorry Valve (or Gamestop, whoever authorized it), but that's a bit of a dick move.

On the bright side, those of you who haven't picked this brilliant game up...you have no excuse anymore.
It doesn't surprise me terribly.

People have been blaming the outcry over the DLC as leading to a "metabombing" of Portal 2's ratings. As I've said before, I think the game was simply not being that well received by users to begin with, and people were just latching onto the people screaming about the DLC (and argueing about DLC is what all the dicussions about the subject have generally come down to when I've been involved).

We'll see what happens, but I'm not going to be shocked if the game is down to $20 or less by this time next year.

Gamestop has been doing price drops like that for a while. I got the collector's edition of God of War 3 when they dropped $20 bucks off the price. It happened within a month or two of the game's initial release. However it is attention-catching that it has been discounted by $20 already and it just came out. It may be an anti-used-game-sales ploy because I'm pretty sure the used copies are selling for $55. So which would you rather buy, a new $40 game or a used $55 game?

Except that it's finals week and if I bought it I would play it instead of studying.

It was really hard not to get spoiled until it was released, with all those leaked videos but not to get spoiled until the price dropped, would have been even harder. Also, all my friends who like Portal played pretty fast through the singleplayer and then co-op right after that, so I'm not so sure whether I could have found someone who hadn't played through the co-op yet.
So, waiting for the price to drop would have made my experience less good. It's up to anyone to decide what they prefer more. It's always like this, whenever you buy something, it's possible that the price will drop shortly afterwards.

Other than finding the original mediocre in every single way? On topic, I'm somewhat unsurprised. This game surely sells a bomb, so lowering the price will only make anyone who hasn't bought it come directly to GameStop. Income abound.

Good thing I got it pirated and didn't pay a dime ^o^

Good business tatic though, they know everyone who really wanted it bought it already and now lowered the price for those who were contemplateing it.
Fact: Piracy is for losers, cool kids buy their games.
Also a fact: Admittance of piracy leads to bannings. Have a good day, sir/madam.
