Couldn't find a similar thread through the search bar so here it goes:

Since a lot of musical lyrics are sung in english and being a widely taught language across the world, I thought that we'd share the wealth of music sung with lyrics that AREN'T in english, as well as discussing content, symbolic meanings and general analysis of a particular lyrics that you feel stand out.

After all, the language of music might be an international one, but sadly, lyrics aren't. So let's give it a go to make the outlandish tounges understandable shall we? :)

Of course, translation of music can be difficult as rhymes might become lost in translation and some words might be near impossible to translate depending on the language, it's something that everyone reading them should bear in mind.

Although I guess some ambitious translators might wish to translate the lyrics so that they work in english as well as the original language, I myself would not advise this though, as some of the original meaning might become lost. However if you are very keen to try and translate it so that it works musically in english as well, then you might want to include a disclaimer telling us that so we know.

In being the OP I guess I should go first:

Swedish metal band called "Raubtier" (which means "predator" in german), and the song is called "Kamphund" (which pretty much translates to "Fighting Dog"). The song is one that most Swedish metalheads have heard at one time or another (and opinions about it differ as they always do):

My translation of the lyrics (with a minimal amount of stylistic deviations from the original songlyrics) basically bottles down to this:

Fighting dog, alphadreams, pole position
An offspring of a bygone era
Three seconds away from the moment of the beast
Scared looks meets the gaze of a fighting dog

ref.

Fighting Dog! (*4)

Frontal bone, sharp claws and blooded teeth
Here growls devil's jaws from the edge of the abyss
Starvation tears, burns till it singes
Awakens scent, bloodlust, rancor and bite

Hunger drives the predators to severity
the struggle is a whip driving the wolves towards the hunt
Whining like the beating wings of valkyries
as it forces the senses to be on edge
As the alphawolf lead the pack forwards towards the wild
it won't help to cry like a pup
The winter cold and the barren storm wind of the tundra
demands it's tribute in yet another prey, yet a scalp. Scalp!

Tough times calls for tough methods
The wilderness follows only the laws of it's own
There is a dark truth hidden in the song of the wolf
Reminding man of his weakness and his doom

Hunger drives the predators to severity
The struggle is a whip driving wolves towards the hunt
Whining like the beating wings of valkyries
As it force the senses to be on edge
As the alphawolf lead the pack forwards towards the wild
It won't help to cry like a pup
The winter cold and the barren tundra storm wind
Demands it's tribute in yet another pray, yet a scalp. Scalp!

ref.

Fighting Dog! (*7)

Personally, I like it. Not my all time favourite song perhaps, but I like the execution (it sounds surprisingly good despite being heavily laden with a peculiar northern regional accent) as well as the theme. It conveys this harsh "dog eat dog" (pun intended) climate that nature and it's non-human creatures abides by, as well as the desperation that the coming of a cold winter force animals and used to force humans as well to in order to stay alive.

Symbolic interpretations could be about that dark fact that sometimes you just gotta do what you have to do. And that you don't always have have the time or the luxury of moral and existential thinking about the situation or what to do, because if you pause for too long, you're dead.

Now it's your turn. Of course it doesn't have to be a song from your native country if you know other languages than english and your native tounge. Just flex those "lingual muscles" and illuminate the rest of us unfamiliar with the language in question. :)

P.S I think spoilers are useful here, and if you don't know how to do it then here's how:

(spoiler)written text or embedded video here(/spoiler) replace these: "()" with these: "[]"

My song of choice is Ash Like Snow by The Brilliant Green.

Also these english lyrics for the song aren't mine, but probably the best translation I've ever heard.

They were written and sung by youtube user Geekyfandubs.

The sky
Is dyed with crimson red
That comes out of the darkness
Of what needs to be said
The stars we used to know
No longer glow
Obscured by all the ash that falls like snow

I watched it all
Through the window of my grief
I never dreamed
That I would feel so cold
There...I come for you

All of my hopes are in a shroud of desolation
Dreams I that once had have all been crushed
Now that everything's changed, I have been holding on so desperately
To the precious things
That I cannot protect
'Cause I always break them...

My heart
Is played just like harp
By sinful hands of darkness
With nails oh so sharp
Your voice is like a drug
That makes me numb
It leaves me with no senses,
Deaf and dumb

No matter how we try to win this war
It never ends!
And why must it be me
Who does the fighting?

Even if all the light around us is extinguished
Even if the Earth is turned to dust
I won't ever forget
That tiny wish that burns eternally
It will guide us to a better world, somewhere

there I come for you yeah
Ash Like Snow
is falling down from your sky
Ash Like Snow
Ash like Snow
Ash like snow
Let me hear...
why I have to fight?

And now all of my hopes are in a shroud of desolation
Dreams I that once had have all been crushed
In exchange for the glory that can overcome the choking dark
I have given up the strength I used to protect what I love
(It's falling from your sky)
I don't know what to do...
(Baby I come for you)

Every time that I'm cut by broken shards of what was once a dream
I will reach into the darkness of my heart,
and I will try to find the strength to carry on!
'Cause I've made it this far...

Edith Piaf - Je ne regrette rien

No, nothing at all
No, I regret nothing at all
Neither the good that's been done, neither the bad
I really don't care

No, nothing at all
No, I regret nothing at all
It's been paid, it's been swept away, forgotten, I don't care about the past

With my memories I have lighted a fire
My pains, my pleasures, I don't need them anymore
Swept away the loves, with their tremolos
Swept away forever
I restart all over again

No, nothing at all
No, I regret nothing at all
Neither the good that's been done, neither the bad
I really don't care

No, nothing at all
No, I regret nothing at all
Because my life, my joys
Today
It all begins with you

EDIT: This is my own translation, by the way. I'm sure an official dude has done an official translation that rhymes somewhere, but really, like she said, "I don't care!"

Böhse Onkelz - Auf Gute Freunde
Shattered dreams,
Images from the old days,
Of the madness I was living,
And what they tell me today.
I slept too little, and drank too much,
The pains in my head
Were a familiar sensation.

I'm drinking to, to good friends,
Lost love, to old gods and to new goals,
To the usual madness, to that which once was,
To the fact that everything ends and to a new year.

Bloody kisses,
Bitter pills.
Fucked by fate,
And always a BAC of 0.3 % (literally "Always 3 per mille", yeah this works better in German...).
I was part of the solution,
And my biggest problem,
I was standing before me,
And couldn't see myself.

I'm drinking to, to good friends,
Lost love, to old gods and to new goals,
To the usual madness, to that which once was,
To the fact that everything ends and to a new year.

The grass/weed was greener,
The lines faster,
The excitement was greater and the nights were longer.
Everything's history,
And I'm glad it is that way,
Or do you think it's nice
To be eating shit.

I'm drinking to, to good friends,
Lost love, to old gods and to new goals,
To the usual madness, to that which once was,
To the fact that everything ends and to a new year.

All but fragments,
In the quicksand of my soul,
Only few moments,
In a lifetime.
I hear celestial laughter,
When I think about how it was.
About the mystery I was living,
And the god I didn't see.

I'm drinking to, to good friends,
Lost love, to old gods and to new goals,
To the usual madness, to that which once was,
To the fact that everything ends and to a new year.

Nanne grönvall - vi är dom tuffaste (We are the toughest)

From north to south brothers and sisters
We steer our ways to where the crowns glow
(Chorus)We will dance until the sun rises, our flags will wave in the top
We are the toughest, the strongest, the most wicked(Can also be, the cruelest, the most awesome) the most beautiful. We are the gang made of steel.
We are the toughest, the strongest, the most wicked(Can also be, the cruelest, the most awesome) the most beautiful, now we go for the goal!

(Not chorus) It does not matter if the bodies bleed.
We will fight and fight until the ice glows.
(Chorus until the end)

My own translation, so please point out any errors.

Someone poured whiskey on my cat, Splash
And lit him
He went "boof"
While he was on my bed

I tried to put him out with a broom
My goitre problem got in the way (I sleep naked?)
Very quickly

Ouch
Ouch
Ouch
Ouch

In four colours

Ey up!
One morning
There's loot at my place
It's my shit wrapped in plastic
Horse's in fishnets
Spare a drop in one's mouth

It's a very grand beer dance
I like my beer in a big glass
And spew

Ooo
Ooo
Ooo
Ooo

Come on you Indians in your igloos

That's life for me
Repeat twice...

Me
Repeat four times...

That's life for me
Repeat twice...

Ey up!
The mother
Is larger than a panel
What a vibration
And a voyage through passion

Be my dirty passenger
And ride in my lime Combi
You are King of the divan

Oh
Oh
Oh
Oh

I'm King of the divan
That's life for me
Repeat twice...

Ey up!
Occupy me
Touch my trinkets
Touch my little house plant
It's not today that I wish to talk of tambourines
Or the head of a mannequin

Yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah

That's life for me
Repeat thrice...

Ey up!
My Nana's the best
She's bizzarre
Marry me
And carry my case
Lever me onto the bar
My life force will come for a grand cocktail

Oh yeah
Yeah
Yeah
Yeah

Dance on the plate
That's life for me
My life for me
Hehe, you're right!. Those were some wierd lyrics. XD

Sorry about the video, only one I could find of it >.>

We're outlaws. We're the street gangs.
We're the insolent ones, nothing pleases us.
Hold a tight reign on us and it will brew trouble.

We're hopeless, so what?
We don't give a damn if you look down on us.

We're nothing, we care for nothing.
Why this wall of silence between us?
There is a wall between us.

Teachers give up on us.
Parents think we're insensible.
Society's expectations exceeds our imagination.
Smart kids must be good they say.
Looking down on us doesn't mean you're better.
Who cares why we lose direction?
Nobody gives a thought to how the apple rots.
We have tried to win consensus.
How much hope have you given us?

Tears are dried, the future's bleak.
We're lost souls. What should we do?
Punishment is your method to make us grow.
It destroys all our hopes and ambitions.

Some people are fortunate to be born without the battlefield
We are fighting alone
We stand at a crossroads and cry:
Don't kill our hopes

Teachers give up on us.
Parents think we're insensible.
Society's expectations exceeds our imagination.
Smart kids must be good they say.
Looking down on us doesn't mean you're better.
Who cares why we lose direction?
Nobody gives a thought to how the apple rots.
We have tried to win consensus.
How much hope have you given us?

*Repeats*

Took me forever to translate it >_> (Mandarin is NOT my best language)

Maybe a few errors here and there, but I think I got it mostly.

Touching song, from a touching movie...

Makes me sniffle a little just thinking about it... *wipes tear*

To go a little more classical, there's Carl Orff's O Fortuna (a/k/a that song you keep hearing in movie ads):

O Fortuna
velut luna
statu variabilis,
semper crescis
aut decrescis;
vita detestabilis
nunc obdurat
et tunc curat
ludo mentis aciem,
egestatem,
potestatem
dissolvit ut glaciem.

Sors immanis
et inanis,
rota tu volubilis,
status malus,
vana salus
semper dissolubilis,
obumbrata
et velata
michi quoque niteris;
nunc per ludum
dorsum nudum
fero tui sceleris.

Sors salutis
et virtutis
michi nunc contraria,
est affectus
et defectus
semper in angaria.
Hac in hora
sine mora
corde pulsum tangite;
quod per sortem
sternit fortem,
mecum omnes plangite!

O Fortune,
like the moon
you are changeable,
always waxing
or waning;
detestable life
now difficult
and then easy
deceive a sharp mind;
poverty
power
it melts them like ice.

Fate?monstrous
and empty,
you whirling wheel,
stand malevolent,
vain health
always dissolves,
shadowed
and veiled
you plague me too;
now through trickery,
my bare back
I bring to your villainy.

Fate, in health
and in virtue,
is now against me,
affection
and defeat
always enslaved.
So at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating string;
since Fate
strikes down the strong,
everyone weep with me!

Omoide wa Okkusenman! - Can be translated to being "Memories are Priceless!"

There aren't realy any hidden meanings in this song but the message is pretty clear.
The song describes the singer reminiscing about his childhood and friends while realizing his life and theirs is nothing like what it used to be.

it hide you somewhere.
when I see a lot of lights,
I feel dear because
you are in one of them.

Let's go out,
packing a bag with a piece of bread,
a knife, and a lamp.
This burning will that my father gave me.
That look that my mother gave me.

The earth is spining, hiding you.
The eyes are shining, and the lights are twinkling.
The earth is spining, putting on you;
putting on us who shall meet each other someday.

This burning will is that my father remain for me.
That look is that my mother gave me.
The earth is spining, hiding you.
The eyes are shining, and the lights are twinkling.
The earth is spining, putting on you:
putting on us who shall meet each other someday.

Kudos to any who know where that is from.

Maybe it's because it's the menu music to Civilization, but it reaminds me of human accomplishment and of all the good humans have done in the world

An absolute classic in Finnish X-mas songs. No, not one of those kid things. It actually has really meaningful lyrics behind the goofy beat. Highly suggested.

LYRICS:

Our x-mas celebration starts already on May
At that time the pigs have the delicatessen in their mouths, it gets fatter
it grows bigger, it grows stronger
And come the November
and children's singing goes like this: it is no doubt the star of the x-mas

Pig - it takes a bullet in its head
Pig - nice man will slaughter it
Pig - and nice man will drink its blood
Pig - and it brings the X-mas spirit

I looked at the lying boar in the pig sty
With a painful expression, with a swelling stomach
At X-mas I don't remember the pig
Only ham I slobber after
and children's singing goes like this: it is no doubt the star of the x-mas

Pig - we put salt on it
Pig - we slobber together
Pig - and daddy is pleased
Pig - to drool

In the X-mas rush hour a man runs blindly
the Advent plows the slush in the streets
Someone looks at a human being, turns his head
When a person bathes in his/her pig sty
and children's singing goes like this: it is no doubt the star of the x-mas

Pig - it going to be put in the oven soon
Pig - its rear is going to be eaten
Pig - it is in the electric oven
Pig - and ma is working

Look mother has put in plenty
Pig's wearing a mustard veil
Big brother is sharpening his knife
And from the bones you know a pig
and children's singing goes like this: it is no doubt the star of the x-mas

Pig - finally it has been killed
Pig - environment gastric acid
Pig - oh how daddy eats
Pig - daddy's belt won't stretch any further

X-mas is full of ham, bacon, shank,
fat, neck and, of course, vodka
When the X-mas is over and the night set in
Then is the man what he eats

Sorry, haven't bothered to learn how to embed videos.

Lyrics:
When I was a child I was told, if you stare at a rock
You can see it grow, breathe and live
I stared it for a while, nothing happened but thankfully I realized
I grew and breathed myself, this lesson I internalized

The eternal sentences set in stone teach nothing but a child's belief
The old ones set the answers, "Raise your hand if you have any questions!"

Some sanctify the divinity of the writings
Some don't see the wisdom of the options
It is rational to ask, to choose nature and science
We are a part of the chain for a moment and that's all there is to it

Humans are always alone even if they have a partner
We cannot foresee the future
It is therefore right to build, not to destroy and claim that you are right and others wrong

(Chorus)
That which was taught to you while you were still in a cradle, you have been taught to believe
You wait for freedom until you die, you stand in a queue because that is what others do
You are a grown product, your guarantee is an eternal life, or the promised land
You bow before power, authority and honor
Like a child you bow before the religion

For those who teach people how to drive, we can recommend them a highway to hell
And for those who wait for the answers, we can recommend churches, temples and fairy tale castles

I will walk with my own feet
I'll go the scenic route
I'll go the scenic route

I do not believe in the soul, I don't believe in the opposite
The fear of life is my only vice

(Chorus)

What is the question
What is the question
Which had no answer?

I really like that song, for both how it sounds and for its lyrics. Sorry for a rather crude translation, but it was rather hard as it doesn't exactly follow all the rules of our grammar.

Also, a song that always makes me smile can be found here. The video has a translation on it. Check it out!
