Rule seven of Games Workshop Middlsebrough: Its all about the quality.
I think this applies here too
Rule three: Devlan Mud makes everything better.

Not hugely though. It's more a case of the quality of posts.

No. Everyone is capable of making a competent comment, just as everyone is capable of making a complete fool of themselves in front of millions of people they don't know.

What I do sometimes base it on is # of posts vs. length of time since they joined, because in general people who have 500+ posts in under a month are generally posting specifically to increase their post count, instead of because they actually care about the topic.

I generally discount people more for having a higher post count, especially those who haven't been members for an extended period of time. The main reason for this is that these people are disproportionally tremendous douchebags as compared to the rest of this forum. So, basic test for everyone here; if you have +2000 posts, and have been a member for less then 4 months, you are most likely a complete and utter tool. Have fun with that! *thumbs up*

Only if the dude has 3 posts and clearly created his account just to bash L4D2 and praise how great Wii Pong is.

a little, but I mostly look at the postcount after the post.. I don't see 20 posts and think "this guy has nothing good to say".. I see a shitty post, ponder, look at the post count, see 20 posts and think "Alright, this guy's new to the forums"

So.. it's.. Postjudice, not really prejudice.

Not generally. There are some who I see as being intelligent people who's opinion I respect, and that sort of reputation (though I'd rather not use that word) can only come through a number of posts. However, I also tend to have a lesser opinion of those that I deem to post too much. Because if someone posts, in my opinion, too much then I can't believe that all their posts can have been of note - and quite frankly I despise one or two word answers.

As far as I'm concerned anybody, whether they have one or one thousand posts, can prove themselves to be intelligent, informed and generally nice guys. Post count is of no importance; it doesn't signify intelligence - only how often the person is willing to comment.

So overall I'd say its quality not quantity that counts; quantity isn't necessarily a good or bad thing; quality always is.

No, if they have a bad post, then they have a bad post regardless of how long they've been around.

No. I judge a person by the quality of his posts, and one good post is all it takes for me.

Only if they show that the time they have spent in their postings has been used well. As in they don't have any "this" posts, or something of that nature which does nothing to promote conversation.
Though I must admit I spend my time in the Games section, so...yeah. I'm in something of the same boat as thebobmaster.
And of course, the color of their names greatly affects the level of authority associated with them.

I form my own opinions. And even though I've just got off a suspension, I think even the mods will be behind me when I say Indigo was a vicious, overly Fanboyish prick. At sometimes, he was litterally a troll.
