Wait, aren't the Asura just that?
They seem to be able to live both underwater and on the surface.

*Player* race. And the Hylek/Quaggan are all living in freshwater. They'd need to introduce a new race to reside in the deep seas (Krait excluded, they're antagonists to the core).

I have such wonderful images in my head of bio-luminescent merfolk in an underwater city build into the wall of a deep sea trench. As far as flavor goes? I honestly don't know what direction they'd go with a 6th race. The Asura are smart, the Norn are strong, the Charr are ruthless, the Humans are tenacious, the Sylvari are adaptable... maybe the Deepsea Folk could be charismatic?

For it to crash and burn or at least barely hit a niche market, like all other non-WoW mmos.

"sips tea"

I hope it crashs and burns, and then get burns by a flamethrower.

Sorry but i hate that it getting overhyped its liek valve games, but valve made portal 2 so eh I like valve, though its fanbase needs to stop praising them to high hevan.

It not the matter of praise, its that it endless with no hate. thats whats annoys me.

Also swtor>>>>>>>>QW2 will ever be, from what I know GW2 will have nothing but world pvp and 5 man dungon for endgame, that does not sound exiting at all, mostly because I hate pvp unless I have flamethrowers, to purge cowardly sneaking gits.

"contuines siping his tea."

I'm not sure I follow, the Asura are a player race and they used to live under water, unless you mean a race that still lives under water.

So you hate it because it's popular? There's a lot of people hating on it for various things also, just look at GW2Guru, that sites a mess. As for end game, technically everything you do in Guild Wars can be considered "end-game", you're levelled down to match the level of the zones, so if you go to a lv10 zone when you're lv80 it'll be just as difficult (ish) as being lv10. It also has flamethrowers [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I46BeUrBgeo].

OT: I imagine they'll open up/create content for the closed areas of the map first like the Crystal Desert, Ring of Fire, Far Shiverpeaks etc. I remember reading somewhere that they're interested in implementing guild halls after launch also. Personally, I hope they allow us to roll a Tengu at some point, I stumbled across a Tengu camp in the BWE for GW2 and they look badass, plus it'd be awesome if they implemented a story that involved them invading Cantha (seeing as they were expelled from Cantha by Usoku).

I stand corrected then, I could have sworn I read somewhere that they did. I wonder where the hell I got that from.

But yes, an underwater race would be awesome. I'd love to see underwater environments.

Well I think the underwater mechanics are a bit of a gimmick so far. Though through the last two betas I've spent most of the time on the surface and when it did come to me going underwater I had few weapon skills unlocked versus some higher level mobs. Maybe I just didn't get the hang of it. I much preferred the surface combat anyway.

I can't see the store sustaining the game by itself. Hopefully we will see expansion packs coming soon and often. That's the sort of monetisation I don't mind seeing: money for content. That way the devs are induced to keep content coming regularly in order to pay their wages.

I would assume the next race would be the Tengu, since they have their own City.

Edit: Yup, they own the Dominion of Winds.

Well, everything you know seems to be wrong. Guild Wars 2 has a strong Single-player and PvE experience, as everyone who's played the beta can attest. Also, Charr Engineers (And possibly ALL engineers) get Flamethrowers.

I expect it will form its own niche in the MMO market, just like TOR has.

But will it change the nature of MMOs forever, or kill WoW, or any of the other stuff people have proclaimed it will do? HA! Won't even come close, in my opinion.

Have to second the motion that the overhyping for this game is irritating too.

A pessimist is what an optimist calls a realist.
The problem with that is that it's a pessimistic statement, not a realistic one.

REAL realists land somewhere in between.

OT: I dunno lol. I don't do MMOs. I entered this thread to find out what GW2 was.

I see them heading into Cantha and Elona come expansion time, though what to do with classes I'm still mulling over.

For success? Well, there is probably going to be a respectably large influx right at launch that leads to some general (hopefully fun) chaos for the first month or 2, followed by the population either stabilizing to where it will be for a long while or for the population to go on the arise again. Honestly, I don't expect the latter to happen, as much as I hope it would, because it hasn't been hyped very much outside of gamer circles meaning there won't be as much public knowledge about it.

Then again, the release date is still TBA, meaning all of this is effectively guesswork (besides how the beta plays (which was awesome) but a subject for a different post).

The people that are saying GW2 is going to fail are pretty stupid to put it nicely. Like other people have said, there's an good following for the game, and the game managed to sell all the pre-purchase codes even before the first Beta Weekend Event. I would call that pretty successful. And if you like SWTOR, then stop complaining on this thread about GW2, and go play that game. It's still possible to play both games, although I can understand with what all the subscribers that SWTOR is losing, it seems like it's circling the drain. I give it an year or two before EA decides to make it F2P.

OT: I really don't know that much about the lore to be honest, but I'm really looking forward to this game! I only briefly tried out the underwater stuff, and it looked really cool. Would love to see more underwater cities / exploration!

I can easily see them doing an expansion to reintroducing Cathan and Elona.
In Canthan the Tengu would be a new race to play despite the Emperor had gotten rid of all non-human off Canthan (maybe they are living on the outskirts of it) while the Elona expansion will have Centeur as the playable race.
Also both games will have a new profession (maybe shaman class that is the Ritualist reborn and not sure what Elona is since Paragon is now the Guardian).

EDIT- Now I think about it there was that scraped standalone game called Guild Wars Utopia.
That one was suppose to be Astez theme like how Canthan is Asia and Elona is Africa. They scaped it cos there were too many concepts that they could of added to the game but they this was the result of Eye Of The North bring created.
They should bring back some of the concepts back like the mounts, the two new profession called Chronomancer and Summoner (I think that what it was called).

I think it will be a pretty decent game, but fall far short of the unrealistic expectations of a lot of the fans.

- It's not going to be a flawless perfect gem
- It's not going to "topple" WoW
- It's not a "Messiah of innovation" for the MMO genre

If there's hype, then you have to go looking for it to a certain extent ... I mean, I've been around the forums for a while, and other gaming forums, and hadn't noticed GW2 until the Preview video. Anything can sink into white noise if you let it ...

This exactly, its not going to be the best thing since WoW its just another average MMO thats being overhyped.

It's already proven to be far and above "Average" from its first Beta weekend.
