Iran, Myanmar, North Korea are good examples.

Talking things through instead of just bombing stuff, why didn't I think of that before?

Did George Bush win a peace prize too?

What the hell does that have to do with it. The intelligence of the US people has no effect on the winning of the Nobel Piece prize. While I cana gree that he doesent deserve it who does? Certainly not dubbya Bush who went to war, hardly peaceful. Its a joke anyway.
What the hell does "planning to pull troops out of Iraq, planning to fix the country, and promising to do other things" have to do with Peace anyway? Like I said planning is not the same as "doing." Ever heard the saying "Actions speak louder than words."

Let us not only forget that the peace we have today was created with the sacrifice of soldiers in the field. Let me remind you of a few wars I can think of that have made a difference...Revolutionary War. You should know this one, we celebrate it every year in July 4th. World War II. Yeah if no one fought, Hitler would still run the show and the European nation would be under German control.

As bad as war is, sometimes it was necessary to achieve the peace that we wanted. To have the freedom we wanted. As much as we like to think, Freedom isn't Free and sometimes we have to fight for it.

Let us also not forget that the Nobel Peace Prize was created after Alfred Nobel who invented...answers ladies and gentleman? Dynamite. An explosive compound that creates destruction. Yeah, peaceful in an ironic sort of way.

I am done with this nonsense. We had some many things that were given to people for achieving something above and beyond anyone else has ever done...now we just give them out to anyone who gives a damn.

Give me a Nobel Peace prize, I am sure I can create something that makes people stop hating each other....I plan to anyway.

US President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize, selected from a field of 205 nominees.

Now, forgive my ignorance and I'm hoping not to get flamed for this. But what for?

I don't know nearly enough of his political or diplomatic history to comment and I know they don't give out Nobel Prizes for collecting enough cereal box tops.
These days, any Nobel prize is a joke unless its in a science or mathematical category.

Most people stopped giving a shit about it about a decade ago. I mean seriously, Al Gore won a Nobel prize. Yeah...

I wish I could go on national television and preach with my fingers crossed behind my back of all the things I intend to do to make the world better, and then get a Nobel prize for it. I would then sell the thing as scrap metal.

I'm with the people who say he has not done that much yet to earn it. He's seems like a cool guy and given the time I think he could earn the thing for more than just his fancy words.

On a side note I think it's pretty funny that people want Micheal Jackson to win the Nobel Peace Prize, though in his defense at least he's done some good through his music and as an example of what not to do.

Ok the thing about the Peace prize is that none of the winners have actually achieved it.

the Dalai Lama, Aung Sang Syu Kyi etc are either prisoners or exiled.

As hard as it is for me to say this, acheiving World Peace is pretty impossible. Look at Jesus, he tried to make the world a better place, but human nature is to interpret words and his actions backfired.

The important thing is the Intent and the Actions I guess.

Uhh...you DO realize it's not America who gives out the Nobel Peace Prize, right? It's the Norwegian Nobel Committee, with the committee for the Peace Prize elected by the Norwegian Parliament.

And for everyone wondering why they chose him [http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20091009/ap_on_re_eu/eu_nobel_peace], to quote the committee:

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said. "His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

The committee said it attached special importance to Obama's vision of, and work for, a world without nuclear weapons.

"Obama has as president created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play," the committee said.

Haven't they already had the prizes this year? Didn't Al Gore win?

There's something screwy here going on here...
No. They've only just started awarding them for this year this week. Three American women won for Chemistry, and German woman won for Literature yesterday, and they just announced the Peace prize today.

Exactly

I like Obama, but a peace prize with a $1mil reward just takes the shit as he clearly hasnt done anything SPECIAl to make him stand out as worthy for this award. The list of previous recipiants should maybe tell him something.

I think he deserves it. He has made a huge effort in the progress of world peace. When was the last time someone made the same effort as he has without invading another country?

The thing I'm most impressed with is the plans for nuclear disarmament. This should have happened many years ago and it takes a real leader to say that they don't need the most powerful weapons ever created to encourage peace.

You know, as much as I approve of you guys evicting Hitler from our premises... it's somewhat unlikely he'd still be running the show nowadays. Unless you think dictators don't age, of course. :p

He has made a rgeat effort so far, but hasn't accomplished enough to win the award. I believe its a little premature, but eventually i think he would win it. To be the people critisizing* him or greatly supporting him, it is a little early to be judging his presidency on just a few months.

Maybe for getting an agreement to cut the number of nuclear weapons?

In terms of global peace that's quite a big one, especially since G.W.Bush's pushing for the "missile defence system" in Poland was escalating Russia to begin practising nuclear launches...

If it's not for that then I dunno why he's been given it, but then I haven't really been up-to-date with what he's been doing lately (firstly I'm in Britain and secondly at uni with no TV so haven't been watching the nightly BBC news).
This is exactly it. He's been leading the fight against nuclear weapons and considering this involves getting rid of his own countries armaments, the largest stockpile in the world, this is a pretty big step for world peace. Hence I can fully understand and support the decision to award it to him.

There have been plenty of plans and agreements about nuclear disarmament over the years. Even under the current plan Obama supports, both the US and Russia can maintain at least 1,100 nuclear warheads. Not quite disarmament, but still down from the current stockpile. Even so, the nuclear disarmament, and anti-nuclear proliferation treaties have been part of the world stage for decades. He hasn't done anything new, and plenty of people have promised to bring down the stockpiles and failed to do so. The people under him, or under no control of his have managed to stabilize the economy, and aside from extending goodwill towards Muslims who don't hate the US regardless he hasn't done much for diplomatic relations. I don't like him for his policies, but he's still the President so I'll hope for the best. However I can't see anything that should get him a Nobel Peace Prize, since he hasn't done anything. Even the Guantanamo closure by the end of the year has had several high ranking officials saying it can't happen. There's too much red tape, too many variables, and not enough places to send them, and likely it won't happen. He's taken on too much too fast to make any indentation in any of these issues. Nothing he's done shows he's worthy of a Nobel Prize, because quite frankly, he hasn't done anything. Not saying he won't, afterall he's only 9 months into his presidency, but awarding it this early is asinine.

The Nobel Prize is not run by Americans. Apart from that snippet, amen, sir!

Honestly, I think Nobel would be very bothered by the actions and choices of the committee established by him. Gore should not have been given one, but I am willing to say that some misguided people could... feel he contributed to peace. Obama? Nothing! He's done nothing.

Dr. Martin King, Mother Teresa, Gandhi? They furthered world peace on a large, if not global, scale. I think the Nobel Committee should just not award a Peace Prize when they cannot find a real candidate. It is telling that the Peace Prize is usually given to some hack when the prize scientific prizes (most the rest of them) are usually shared among great scientist more deserving of a whole share of the renown and cash that comes to Laureates.

Obama is a fraud and will be seen by History as a do-nothing at best and possibly an ill-doer.

Its just one massive PR job to try and save face when he can save the country from descending into chaos. Honestly, no president could ever affect the country, let alone Obama. Presidents don't have power, they're in office to draw attention away from it. He's got a good pr department though...

Wait, what? Article II Section 2 of the Constitution, my friend. Read it.

The Constitution gives comparatively little power to the President. Most of that power is directly overseen by the Senate. That is at least the way it was supposed to work. Executive authority has grown since its inception.

Yeah yeah yeah, i know all about declaring war, and bombing shit, and declaring marshal law, but none of that actually has anything to do with the internal operation, economics, judicial rulings, or federal policies of the nation.

The president can bomb shit, and he can make anything that gets through congress and the house not happen (veto). The president doesn't have any proactive power over the internal policies of the country.

Mugabe was also in the front-running to get this prize, so that says it all really.
