Prey: A Character Driven RP [FINISHED]

Maya drew closer to Lily and Gabriel as soon as Zetta let go of her hand, she had no intention of being more than a few feet away from at least one of the adults whilst she was still outside. Once Zetta beckoned for her and the others to enter the house, she made her way in quickly, looking nervously behind herself as she stepped over the doorway for any sign of whatever had got Takeda. Seeing nothing, she slipped into the nearest room and dejectedly flopped onto a sofa, ignoring the switched-off television opposite and instead lay cured up facing the other way, her thumb already comfortingly in her mouth.

A couple of quiet hours passed in Rin's apartment, each of her guests keeping to themselves for the most part. The woman herself was absent for much of the time, only appearing briefly to drop off a few cardboard boxes of notebooks and several computer hard drives. Eventually, she called together the three looking far brighter than before, her previous tiredness replaced by what seemed to be a manic glee.

"You will be pleased to know that I have made all the necessary preparations, and I have located our targets using my gift. Since it seems you have all recovered enough, we might as well get on with this job. I hope you don't mind me using a bit of time travel to take us back a couple of days but those thieves have put themselves into a rather dangerous situation and I'd very much like to make sure that certain things don't get their hands on Excalibur... not including you Alec, of course!"

Rin laughed hollowly and reached out to take one of each of the westerners hands in her own. Without warning the apartment melted away before eyes to be replaced by bland greyness, which then itself was banished by the appearance of a new room. It was mostly empty save for a large screen covering one wall, a number of small CCTV cameras and eight wooden figures equally spaced around the room's edges.

"Welcome to Paris, approximately midday on the 19th June. I've rented out this house for the month and had this particular room refurbished for our task. Our targets are currently residing less than a mile away from where we are now and haven't moved in the last few hours. It is here you must bring all of them, including the girl, before we move onto the next stage. I trust all three of you have either a power or the appropriate equipment to carry out what must be done. Any questions? "

"Hurrah..." Gabriel said softly as he stepped through the door. "Thank him for him letting us use this, won't you?"

He quickly moved through the small hallway and into the nearest room. Maya had settled there already. He promptly turned, and went to find the second nearest room. Luckily for him, this one also posessed a couch. He put Takeda down as gently as possible and pulled the jacket off him, replacing it with a blanket thrown over the couch.

He streched his arms for a bit, trying to stop them from shaking.

"You don't seriously expect me to use this 'power' on someone, do you?" Dr. Strauss asked, "I just can't do that again. I won't. There has to be a better way."

Dr. Strauss inhaled deeply and exhaled slowly to fight off the coming panic attack as the memories came flooding back to him again. The images flashed in front of his eyes, each more horrible than the last. Dr. Strauss stifled a pained whimper.

Rin sighed and patted Dr. Strauss on the back before passing him a small pistol.

"To be honest I wasn't really expecting you to, take this, it's similar to what Alec will be using. Just please keep it concealed unless you really need it, the last person under my employment to get one from me dropped theirs at the worst possible moment and indirectly caused this whole unfortunate affair. Anyhow, here's a map with the location of our targets and I've drawn on the quickest route to get there. It shouldn't take more than a few minutes on foot."

She handed the map to Alec and pointed out to him where to go.

"Now if none of you have any other queries then would you kindly start off, our demonic friends have been hanging around in that house for over two hours and although I don't think they intend to leave right away, my gift has been wrong before. Alec, you lead the way.

"I'll try to scrounge us all up some food," Zetta announced as everybody drifted to different parts of the house. She found herself heading for the kitchen without hesitation. The fridge, the pantry, the drawers... It all seemed so familiar to her, even if she'd gone so long without seeing any of it. Maurice hadn't changed the place up very much, either.

"Hm." She dug through the pantry until she came up with a few boxes of cereal. Some off-brand kind with honey-glazed wheat bunches. "No wonder he had to go to the store, if this is all he's got," she said to herself with a sigh. Thankfully, her uncle still had milk in the fridge. She found the bowls and spoons and set them on the table. Zetta leaned out into the hallway to announce, "I found some cereal, if you guys are still hungry. It's probably not the best, but it's something." With that, she ducked back into the kitchen to fill the bowls.

"Look Strauss, do you even know what you're saying? You almost killed, and then caused an innocent scientist to get killed, but you don't put that power to good use?

The demon took the map and almost immediately began walking towards the warehouse.

The sword is definitely somewhere close. If only we were teleported closer to it.

After 17 minutes of walking, and a few reviews of the map the group reached the warehouse. The weather was getting worse as the group was walking, then it began to rain. The rain fell rapidly and put out the fire nearby. More smoke began coming out of the burning car.

Over the next couple of hours, Maya didn't move from her spot on the sofa. When one of the adults offered her food she refused, even though she had been hungry before she didn't feel like eating anything now. She buried her face into the soft fabric and tried to forget the look on Takeda's face when he realised he'd been hurt, how he changed when he... several times she cried so hard so thought she would never be able to stop, but then she felt drained and numb again and ended up lying on her back looking up at the ceiling, spotting patterns in the lines of paint. She imagined one was a fox, smiling down at her and waving, but when she shifted her head slightly to see it from a different angle it looked more like a house with a car in front of it.

Eventually, despite everything she began to feel stiff and bored, so she slipped off her resting place and crawled over to a small table on which lay several colourful magazines. Maya took one off and began to silently flick through them, stopping occasionally at an interesting photo of a celebrity or an animal but not really taking it in. She couldn't read the writing that accompanied them, so the little girl simply had to guess what she was looking at, but it was more interesting than staring at a ceiling.

"Oh man." Gabriel said, returning from his carrying tasks, "Best thing you coulda given me right now."

He sped into the kitchen and grabbed a bowl before Zetta poured in any milk, and started shoveling the contents.

Sugarsugarsugarsugarsugar...

Dr. Strauss shot Alec a poisonous glare.

"What possible 'good' use is there for this?" he fired back.

Gabriel spent the next two hours, apart from indulging in the cereal presented to him, pacing around, exploring the house without regard for the owners privacy and snapping his fingers, between which visible sparkes were flying. All his actions betrayed that he was feeling either anxious or caged.

Lily stood in the kitchen with the others for a while, simply standing in silence. She would have brought up the body initially, but with Maya in the next room, it probably wasn't the most tactful, and people tended to frown on objectiveness during times of emotional upheaval. She eventually left and found a bedroom upstairs. Thankful for the respite, she locked the door slipped off her shoes, opened the wardrobe dug through the back and removed a couple of locksmithing tools from the belt around her stomach before settling down to work, hopeful that she wouldn't get distracted for the next couple of hours. Hopefully she could get away with claiming to be sleeping if she squeezed out a tear or two to direct the idea of her lying to a different route.

After eating two bowls of cereal, Rezetta felt a lot better. She was still tired, but she felt too anxious to sleep. She couldn't shake the feeling that something bad was bound to happen soon--as if the group didn't have enough problems. Besides, Maya was in the living room and she didn't feel up to trying to explain Takeda's death to her still. It was likely the girl had already figured it out by now, but...
Instead, she remained at the kitchen table and rested her head on her arms, lost in thought.

Maurice came back eventually, carrying several bags of groceries. Zetta helped him put them away whilst taking part in awkward conversations and silences. He slunk off after a while, presumably to his room, and Zetta slid back onto a kitchen chair and idly flipped through a crossword puzzle book her uncle had bought.

After a few minutes of flicking through the magazine, Maya got bored, most of the pictures seemed to be either scantily dressed European women or expensive cars, neither of which interested her in the least. She dropped the magazine onto the floor and went out into the quiet house to see if she could find any of the adults which she supposed must still be around. The first room she came across had a couch that was very similar to one she had lay on for the past two hours, except rather than having a television opposite there was a computer on the other side of the room, next to which lay the case containing Excalibur. Normally, it would have been the sort of thing that the young girl loved the fiddle with, however today it was what lay on the sofa which caught her attention.

For several minutes Maya stood silently staring at the bundle, part of her wanting to look but also dreading what she knew would be there. Eventually, curiosity got the better of her and she lifted the blanket just an inch to peer under. Less than a second later, the small girl fell back with a scream, she hadn't expected the body to look like that already. She turned and ran back out of the room, pulling the door shut with a slam behind her, the noise reverberating throughout the whole house. She stood there trembling but still holding tightly onto the door handle to stop anything in there coming back out for her.

"Well I don't know Strauss! You have the power to instantly get someone sick with a deadly disease, we're trying to steal a sword, AND we're dealing with demons. I really don't know how your power will help." Alec said with sarcasm.

The demon walked up to the door of the house that the map led him to.

Dr. Strauss resisted the urge to punch Alec in the face.

"You idiot. I'm the human equivalent of a biological weapon. You think I can control who the disease spreads to AFTER I've infected someone?" Dr. Strauss fired back at Alec, "If you really do want to risk an epidemic to get one damn sword... you are either incredibly stupid or insane."

The demon facepalmed.

"AIDs doesn't exactly spread through the air. I also don't think that demons waste their time with mortal flesh. I hope you get the idea huma-I mean doctor."

After a few seconds of positioning his feet and legs, the demon performed a Gastrizein-style kick into the center of the door which broke after a second strike.

Maya was still clutching onto the handle to the room where the kitsune's body lay when without warning a foot thrust its way through the front door just down the hall-way from where she was still standing. She screamed and fell onto her knees before scrambling backwards away from the intruders.

No, please!!! I don't want to die like Takeda did!

"Help!" she cried aloud, praying that one of the adults would hear her.

"Alec! You don't just go around kicking in the door of houses where our kind is staying. Not exactly the best way to have them not kill us." Blackrose shouted, anger coursing through her voice. Hearing a small girl scream help, she shoved Alec aside and walked in.

"Don't worry, we're not going to hurt you, we just need to talk." She yelled through the house.

Maya crawled away as fast as she could from the loud scary woman and the men who accompanied her before picking herself up and fleeing into the kitchen. As soon as she saw Zetta she ran up to her and hugged the woman's legs in panic.

"There's people outside who kicked a hole through the door and they're trying to get in!" she squeaked, hoping that the grown-up would know exactly what to do.

Maya's fantasy had ended for the demon was not trying to get in the house, but was already inside, and was towering over her and her friends. An intimidation illusion was being used, Alec now looked five feet taller, and snake-like to the people in front of him.

"Now you shall come with these people to where they will lead you, but first you'll tell me where the sword isssss." Hissed the Demon.

"I do not know who you half-demons are, and I do not care. If you do not listen to me, you will suffer great consequencesssss."
