I think one of the issues involved here is that things like digital distribution have gotten to the heart of the concept of "intellectual properties", and ownership. I think a big part of the issue is that the letter of the matter has not been a major issue before this level of technological innovation, and it's upset a lot of people who rightfully see a lot of aspects of IP rights as being inherantly wrong when it was not really an issue when physical media existed.
Well that, and greed. Improved statistical tracking has convinced a lot of people somehow that piracy (which is wrong) equates directly to lost sales, and that somehow those pirating would have bought the property in question (or the right to use it) if they hadn't been able to pirate it. This is fundementally untrue, however in the final equasion greed is greed and the mere suspician by some guy who made 10 million dollars that he could have made 20 million is enough to whip him into a frothing rage most of the time.
In the final equasion though I think piracy is simply the most public issue, because being wrong it's the one that media industries can most easily attack. One of the reasons why I think a lot of people are very lukewarm to IP laws is the fact that by the logic used by some of these artists it would be a crime to say lend someone a book, or (as guys like Harlan Ellison have pushed) or for school teachers to copy media to distribute to students.
What's more I think services like Youtube bring up some interesting questions. For example I am not 100% comfortable with an artist of any stature forcing down a video of a kid dancing to their music. I feel doing stuff like that and showing it off is part of the legitimate usage of the medium. Of course the flip side is (as argued) that someone who sees that video is hearing the music for free.
Without going into the letter of the law, I kind of see things like Youtube as being similar to a publically accessible park. Just as it would be ridiculous to arrest someone for putting down a radio and dancing in a park because someone walking by might hear the song, I also think it's ridiculous to do the same on Youtube, the sole differance being the number of people in the potential audience.
The point being that while I think Prince is wrong on what is happening to the internet, and that it will disappear as a "fad", I do see where he's coming from. It's arguably not an easy issue and while piracy is theft, I think extending "piracy" to include things like youtube videos, fan sites, and similar things is going too far.
To put things into perspective, rulings akin to what Prince seems like he would want, would effectively give media owners an incredible amount of latitude to control free speech and behavior. I have my problems with private networks and sites being able to censor and ban people without appeal as it is (since the goverment can't even censor people like that... and it's an increasing issue when pretty much all platforms of mass communication are private), I see Intellectual Property issues turning into something very similar over time if a lot of the artists have their way. One of those things where what is right, right now, is not the right thing in the big picture as it can snowball into much bigger problems than the piracy issue that people are tying to address. With the fortunes still being made (and lost) I also don't see any kind of massive nessecity, it's not like were facing a crisis where the entire creative industry will die out in three months if it's not stopped. Lesser of two evils and all that (but then again, if you think it's costing you a fortune, you might not see it that way... or not care about the long term as long as you get yours).

You've brought up some interesting points and I wish I had the same capacitry and patience to write such a long post. But the reason I thought he was so wrong is because I thought he was talking about the Internet being shut down or something because it's no longer cool.
