Because Prince is hip.

He's the cool daddy-o with the youngsters.

Seriously, this guy is an ignorant douche with just about everything he says.

Also, this reminds me of a certain asshat who said "Ah, motion pictures are just a passing fad."
Like Lord Kelvin?

And I haven't laughed at anything so much as I laughed at: "All the internet does is fill your head with numbers. I mean seriously, NUMBERS. That's hilarious. That's like ignorance on a whole new level. Like the internet is just one big calculator...

Yeah, who likes to make money?

But he's made a good observation that in traditional record selling the distributors pay you in advance for your discs and he is uncomfortable giving the records in advance. Not that new system isn't way better in most ways.

The internet will only die when communications fall apart. My guess is it will take either something better than the internet, or war to kill the internet. Many countries have developed anti-telecommunications weaponry. It would completely suck. lol.

This coming from a man who can't choose a stage name, and actually stick with it. The Artist Formerly Known as Prince,
(How the hell am I supposed to pronounce that?), and Prince..Christ, he's changed his name more times than someone in the Witness Protection Program.
He changed it because a earth spirit came to him in his dreams and said to change his name and not to talk in front of a camara only sing...
Dumbass, his music wasn't even good.

I would post a dismissing reply, but I can't think of one because just opening a web browser fills my head with digit after digit. Curse you, number-filling internet! Cuuuurse you!

Holy.... I couldn't even dream up a better word to describe Prince right now...

You win sir...
You win...
My credit goes to a fellow Escapee who came up with that word in the first place, don't remember his name though.
And I won't remember your name when I steal that phrase.

Ah, the cycle of originality

Well, the career that was formally known as Prince's is now over, so...

BWA HA HA HA!!! Sorry, I couldn't contain myself. Hip? You dumb fucker, more people use the internet everyday! The only thing you ever did that was "Hip" was using "2" instead of "to".

4chan, take care of him.

To me, the fact that he gave one of his albums away BEFORE it's store release, free with the Daily Mail of all papers, says he doesn't know much and has a phobia about doing any research before he says anything.

Shame, if he had the internet, he could look things up on wikipedia and not look like a buttnugget.

Note this isn't about piracy and wanting to steal his back catalog, it's about being utterly ignorant of how your own industry has changed.

EDIT: having bothered to go read up on the giveaway, it seems it actually earned him a sackload of cash, and was a good marketing tool, getting 3 million of his CDs into homes that might never listen to his music.

I still think he's foolish for pretending the internet isnt there, and I haven't looked, but I imagine there's a good few hundred prince torrents floating around too.

I wonder what inspired such anti-net feelings however.

turns out he's doing all he can to avoid record companies and I guess he sees amazon and itunes as a similar evil...however, if you want to sell your music, I think you've got to step over that hump.

Welcome to Darwinism. The fact that he is ignoring the internet as a distribution method means that he will inevitably fail. His failure means that no one will follow his example. The system works.

This is also the craziest thing I have seen in a good, long while.

I remember him! He changed his name to something pretentious
So, he changed his name (Temporarily) to "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince," and published under that name (Plus, he got a lot of free publicity out of it). Eventually, the contract was renegotiated, and he changed his name back.
"The Artist Formerly Known as Prince" would be fine. He changed his name to this:

That's pretension.

Wow... first of all, you people do realize Prince was the first major artist to use the internet as distribution for music?

Also, for everyone that says his career is over, maybe you might want to do some research, he's had some of the highest grossing tours in the past few years.

Anyhow, this article about him is kind of baffling, especially considering in 2006 the guy was given the Webby Lifetime Achievement Award.
