It's a zombie game people. Not a zombie book like World War Z. It isn't going to be as "deep" as most emotional games.

And I'm glad that, as far as game design will go, the game is like Borderlands. As long as the plot and story aren't similar in tone, I'll be fine.
Implying that a book is somehow automatically better than a game in this regard.

Also, I think everyone is taking this a little too pessimistically. I interprite the quote as; no, the game is not going to be a heavy paced, linear, heavily scripted dialog binge; it's going to be open world, scavenging and open-objective based. There is NO reason this will impact the narrative of the game; hell, look at what Fallout [insert number(or city)here] can do with one bloody shell of a house. They clearly have talent, and this in NO way objectively degrades that.

They might be referring to the fact that it may feature 4 player co-op, and requires you to actually take action, instead of just pressing a random assortment of buttons. I think they would have referenced Left 4 Dead, but lets face it. One game blatently saying "we are like this very similar other game about Zombies" doesn't bode well.

I think also the main meat of this assumption its like Borderlands may be as simple as " the levels are not liniar, you do not have a set goal on where you are going and are free to roam from point a to point z instead of going through points b-y. You are on a resort island, you can fight your way to get through wherever you need to. And being an island, like Just Cause 2, maybe vast! It could take you ages to explore all what is there. Finding places to survive. You could be in a building like structure in one portion, a bungaloo section the next, and a water park the next day, and you don't have to be told which to go to first.

Lets not jump the gun and say they are trying to hype their material as a knock off of Borderlands, lets try to assume what they may actually mean. Besides from what I've researched the game is meant to be melee based. So you won't be bogged by a series of guns. Like the initial picture shows, your best friend may be just a pipe.

Mowing down zombies from a distance like in L4D was fun, but imagine if your only way to defend against them is for you or for them to get right in your face. Melee is your escape option to get them off you, your first option is to run like your legs are made of fire.

So what your saying is that game advertising gives us the wrong impression? HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN!!

Yeah its just another game trailer that tries to sell the game without considering what people want from the game: actually playing it. I think gameplay and showing that your game is fun is a better method to sell things like this but I'm not in marketing. Actually i think there marketing should be fired for trying to sale the game by selling something completely different and thus inevitably pissing people off when the game isn't what they expect and scarring off the people you want to actually buy it. Maybe they should pull a Valve and fire these guys.

......Someone needs to make a Heavy Rain style Zombie game. Seriously, I'm incredibly disappointed in the choice of making it like Borderlands, mainly because I did not like Borderlands.
Actually I'm surprised no one tried to make a zombie mod or immediately jumped on the idea of making the same game... but with zombies! Of course it hasn't been that long, the zombie version could be in development as we speak, marching on in gaming quest to put zombies into everything.

EDIT: The 4400 posts have been posted.

As long as I can dismember zombies, I couldn't care if the game was like hello kitty island adventure
O.O
That would be fucking awesome. Quick question; would you be killing zombies as hello kitty, killing mutated forms of hello kitty or just blowing said baddies on her island??? Just asking. This could be awesome. As in mind-blowing.

but Borderlands was always about shoot'n and loot'n...Diablo style is what I heard? idk
edit: and a very bleh story I must add

I thought they'd mention something like a cross between Far Cry and Dead Rising but that was just my initial response to the cinematic trailer

While I'm tempted to just stare at the screen and say "What." about a thousand times to the connection of Dead Island to Borderlands, I'm overjoyed by the fact that it's not like Heavy Rain.
Just wondering but what is so bad about Heavy Rain exactly? I haven't played it yet (if you could use "play" for something like that) cause I'm waiting for the price to go down but what's wrong with it exactly?

So for the Borderlands type feel does this mean we get an assload of firepower and it's like a loot RPG type game? :D

If they do it as like Dead Rising just please don't put us on some kind of live timer, that's what kept me from playing those games in the first place.

If an emotional piece isn't reprisentative of the game, then I'm sad that we got the wrong idea. I got excited for a Heavy Rain with zombies. The pre-trailer discussions made it sound very dynamic, and the emotional bits I got from the trailor... I thought I had the perfect zombie game on the way. But the comparison to boarderlands... well it puts me off. Like it's being misreprisented by the trailer.

It was an AWESOME trailer, and whoever made it had a good idea. It's just not what the game is, by the sounds of it.

Considering I actually read what the game was about on the site, this doesn't come as a surprise to me.

People are fucking stupid. How could you think that game is going to be anything like Heavy Rain from that trailer? It's a fucking Zombie game!

They probably just thought "hmmm there is a family in that game, there was a family in Heavy rain that looked kind of similar. They must be the same game"

I hate people....

well thats what happens when you make completely inaccurate trailers...what little id seen of the game up until that trailer looked like it was shaping up to be a pretty visceral, but still standard zombie-killing game. after seeing a trailer 100% focused on a small number of victims with a serious and somber tone, i figured the game had shifted to be more story oriented; but alas, it was apparently blatant lies like most trailers.

what makes this so weird is that instead of lying with a trailer full of mindless sex and violence like most deceptive advertising, they lied to us with emotionally moving and subtle imagery. thats...better, i guess.

Damage control and killing interest over your game before it has even come out, Techland. Good work. Oh, and bashing your peers for an innovative game that shows more choice in game design than most others.

Sebastian Reichert is a troll.

You can choose from a selection of characters! Clear the game on ultra cute mode to unlock hello kitty. Other modes include "cuddles mode" all the blood is rainbow goodness! When the zombies die they turn into nice fluffy kitties!

GOYT, amirite?

Considering the game looks like some kind of blatant combination of 'Condemned' and 'Dead Rising' (primarily, there's a picture of a guy who's made an electric sword ffs) the 'Borderlands' comparison seems a bit odd. Maybe they don't want to call too much attention to their "influences". None the less it looks awesome, largely because the games it's ripping off are pretty awesome.

I'm really glad they went to the effort of making the trailer not just a showcase of gameplay. Now I feel I have a starting point from which to approach the game when it comes to thinking about character. ("Every game is a role playing game" and all that.)

I never expected the game to be like Heavy Rain though. Are people so lacking in imagination nowadays that they can only think about things in terms of the next nearest approximation?

Still, there's nothing new there. Did you kids know that FPS games used to simply be called 'Doom style games.' Little history lesson for you.

I think it's easier to describe something in terms of it's familiarity to something else. Regardless of how original what you have created may be (and lets be honest nothing is especially original these days anyway) describing something from start to finish is a long complicated process that if nothing else is a pain in the arse to write so if you can simplify that by comparing it to something people are already familiar with then 1) you don't bore your audience with a lengthy explanation that might at best sound like a training manual (and who reads the manual anyway?), and 2) rather than attempting to draw in a brand new audience from nowhere you can capitalise on the audience that you already know exists because since they liked this thing that was similar the odds are they'll like your new idea as well, and if those are the people who are going to like your idea those are the people who need to see your idea.
