I've played MGS 2, 3 and 4.

Although I loved 3 I'm going to have to go with 4 as it had a far better control scheme and was easier to do what you wanted.

Had to go with Sons of Liberty, since I've only played that one and Guns of the Patriots.
Sure, you get to play as Snake in MGSIV, but the game is only cut-scenes! At least MGSII had some actual gameplay.

Raiden sucks though.

First one. It had best story, it was well paced, comprehensible and most of the all, it made SENSE.

After this game they just went overboard with scifi-fantasy elements in a typical Japanese fashion. Not for me.

Sons of Liberty was easily the best one with Snake Eater in a close second. If these rumors are true, however, it looks like I'm shelling out even more money for games that I've already beaten.

I loved them all, and beat them all on the hardest difficulty (MGS4, The Boss Extreme's a *****) but Sons Of Liberty brings back the most memories... Especially that kickass sword near the end.

For me, the MGS games (the canon ones anyway) are from best-worse - 1. MGS3 2. MGS1 3. Peace Walker 4. MGS2 5. MGS4 6. Portable Ops
I love every one, but MGS3 is the pinnacle. It has a contained, brilliant story that also adds to the overall crazy that concludes in MGS4. I just need to play Metal Gear and MG2: Solid Snake, and then I'll have played the entire story.

Please don't do this to me, Escapist. I can't pick just one.

I loved each one in different ways.

Though with a SOCOM to my head, I'd probably say a tie between MGS2 and MGS3

I'm also a huge fan of Ghost Babel (MGS for the Gameboy Color), despite this one having nothing to do with Hideo Kojima.

Cue the duck photo.

This summer I plan to play through the entire series besides 4 (i lack a PS3). I understand that this is truly a universe I would like to experience when I get the time.

MGS the original and best
I agree it's great, but this poll like many others forgets that MGS wasn't the original.

It was the third Metal Gear game. (well there were 2 alternate sequels to Metal Gear, but nobody acknowledges the other one)

I hate how so many people dislike Metal Gear Solid 2 even though from a storytelling point of view it was a work of genius. In fact there is a site that I can't remember the name of at the moment dedicate towards dissecting the story and explaining a lot of the underlining messages and symbolism that often flew over gamer's heads. I think most people hate MGS2 because you played as Raiden and their simple minds were too confused with the narrative at the end of the game.

One small example that blew me away was the final fight with Solidus where you realize that Solidus was right, but you're forced to kill him anyway. Most importantly, just like Jack doesn't have a choice in the matter, the gamer doesn't either because ultimately MGS is a videogame and you have to beat the final boss. I also liked the similarities between Jack i.e. Raiden and the jackass gamer. Jack only had VR training which he is often criticized for in the game which in a way is criticizing the gamer who also has had only virtual experiences. I could talk forever about this. I only wish MGS4 had ended as strongly as MGS2 did.

Why didn't Kojima go with my ending where the player is forced to kill Snake at the very end by pulling the trigger? How many games have the player kill off their favorite character? I can't think of any.

I loved MGS 3 and Portable Ops but to me the most fun was Peace Walker because the multiplayer was so much fun.
