Oh wait it was Metal Gear SOLID. And I was going to say metal gear for the NES.

In that case I will have to say that I haven't played them.
Did you know none of the NES Metal Gears are cannon? ;) If you want Kojimas cannon, you need the MSX versions; Metal Gear, and Metal Gear: Solid Snake.

MGS the original and best
I agree it's great, but this poll like many others forgets that MGS wasn't the original.

It was the third Metal Gear game. (well there were 2 alternate sequels to Metal Gear, but nobody acknowledges the other one)
Indeed Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, (THE BLACK SHEEP)Metal Gear: Snake's Revenge (The Americana one)

but this thread was about MGS so that's why i said original and best

I liked MGS: Sons of Liberty the most, I liked Raiden a total opposite of Snake, whiney and inexperienced, atleast what we got to know in the start.

MGS 1 and 3.

1: Decent atmosphere, acting, gameplay ect. Though, mostly for making stealth popular.

3: Took 1's mechanics, improved them, and added to them. What a sequel should do.

Still, give me Thief or the original Splinter Cell over MGS any day.

I can't really say that I care about playing Kojimas games and no I didn't know that they were not canon but then again I don't really care.
Still interesting to now :)

I've enjoyed all the games so far! They are the best! The first games a little more so because of the heavier emphasis on stealth, but I still love 'em all.. even if the fourth is more of a movie..

4 was such a massive disappointment for me. There was too much focus on action and the cut scenes are just embarrassingly poor... oh, I mean, their pretty, well acted, and well shot, but they're long-winded to the point of lunacy, often redundant (see the scene with ocelot on his boat when US troops stormed the area -- for 10 fucking minutes), and end up feeling like a chore. And while the story may or may not have been good, I'll never know because I literally could not see the plot for all the exposition.

Linear action sequences, frequent installations, and a bold determination to give every character, plot point, and setting get the screen time they deserve made the whole thing sour to the taste. This is a game that does not amount to the sum of its (admittedly spectacular) parts.

OT: MGS 2 FTW, BTW. I was better at it than 3, so my fun wasn't spoiled by dying and being spotted so often.

I only really layed MGS1 and it's probably still my favourite, but last year I watched every cutscene from every game over a couple of months period (it was like trying to power through a TV show, seriously) so I think actually it works better as a whole without picking out individual games.

That said, in terms of story and gameplay I think MGS1 was self-contained enough, and the gameplay (for the time) new and innovative enough that it still stands out as being the best of them all.

My favourite is probably Peace Walker, but I maybe only saying that because I sometimes get alot more attached to my PSP games. And (other than MGS:portable Ops) is the only one I own. The rest are my brothers, but as they were on the home consoles I played them loads too. Buts its very close between 3, 4 and Peace Walker, although I've never actually played the original (Don't crucify me!).

But Peace Walker is actually amazing...

Huh, I thought MGS3 would be less popular, though it is my favourite by far.
I love you guys.

To me the series peaked at 3. Aside from the first it had the best balance of cut-scene and game play, by MGS standards at least. MGS4 felt like you barely played the damn game. I like MGS1 a lot, but I personally found the story for 3 to be the best. That, and The Boss is my favorite character in the series.

More people like MGS2 and Raiden's pansy ass better than MGS4? For shame!
Probably because you could get him to cartwheel up stairs and break his neck.

Personal favourite is the first one, specifically the Twin Snakes version of it.

MGS 1-3 are all classics in my book; Sons of Liberty made me fall in love with the series in the first place, but I've always been partial to 1 - however, props goes to 3 for really diversifying the gameplay and keeping things fresh while retaining that core MGS feel. I have mixed feelings about 4...
