They're called Mods. That's who decides

Plus there hasn't been that many people given strikes lately in OT or R&P
I think that's what is so concerning. Rather obvious violations of the rules just sat there. Whatever is happening behind the scenes, it's probably not a good thing.

I knew it was coming; not even 24 hours later, and already a ?[Political]? thread had to be locked in Off-Topic because someone thought it?d be funny to ?make a statement? and poke the (mods) bear with a mocking thread; likely the same folks that will act butthurt and complain that the mods over exercise their authority and ?take away our toys.?. It?s like having an unemployed stoner advocating for the legalization of marijuana on the steps of city hall, an example of the WORST potential of marijuana; one can?t help the cause when one is the reason a cause must exist in the first place.

To be fair they also closed the thread about the Christchurch massacre with the statement being something like ?Not a topic we want discussed here?.

So those of the user base that was demanding politics out of the Escapist, you may just get it after a Monkey?s paw fashion.

I'll ask to see if there's a way we can be more transparent with some of our actions, but, as I mentioned earlier, I cannot make any promises.
I'm surprised it's something that requires such consideration. Transparency and a little warning should be a given on any platform with a large audience. "Hey guys, we've had a big ass discussion for weeks/months on end, and we've concluded R&P will be closing. You have a few days/a week to continue posting there. BYE" ... That can't be tough to slap together. I get people are busy, but...

I'm not really concerned. The forums are going to have to migrate to whatever V.2 is going to be sometime in the future anyway.
Thats what's so friggin weird about this. Its a dead ass shell of a forum which, given the no warning removals and no caring about archives, will probably be just thrown in the bin content and all when the move happens. They binned GID, WW, and RP with minimal to zero warning with proportional opportunity to save or archive anything. Nobody can believe the two remaining active forums are going to be archived and ported to a new forum.

Why are extensive, deep, meaningful and supet sekrit discussions even necessary? Just do whatever, or don't do anything, it won't matter when the new forum is introduced.

The talk of community direction and all that is what has me perplexed. There ain't no community left here. The forums are essentially a seperate entity from the new site, and neither the forumites or the site content creators have made any effort to connect to or engage with each other for quite some time. Why are we suddenly so worried about community direction when the people in charge don't even want to talk to the community, and the community is barely fucked about it?

I'm already a little distant with the place since new ownership came aboard, and this recent decision and how they handled it isn't helping. But if my entire legacy on my profile, every one of my posts, every thread I've posted in, every badge, all of it... just ups and drops forever, I'm gone and never coming back. It doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things, but damn it this profile and everything I did with it has has been an experience I don't want to have reset to 0, especially when it's been 7 1/2 years and counting since I signed up

I would personally love to tell you all everything we have planned in extreme detail so that you can be excited alongside us or even offer your suggestions and considerations along the way, but I am not able to do so.
I understand completely, red tape and all that. But I'm not even asking for extensive detail about future plans. Just... something more than nothing that we've been getting. It certainly makes me even more nervous considering we just wiped away an entire sub-forum section without even a minute of warning beforehand. It was very, very surprising and honestly a little worrying, as you can no doubt see from the responses others have been giving as well. When there's a decently large userbase to any place or forum, suddenly just flicking a switch and going "Boop, shit's suddenly missing! Have fun!" can be a generally unsettling way of doing things. At least, in my eyes.

Edit: I wanna add that you guys by no means actually owe us anything. You're hosting a forum and content hosting site for free for us to enjoy. So I don't mean to post these responses from a place of entitlement. With the previous owners, we didn't get much consideration or warning about major changes, and things just disappeared beneath us without being told until it happened. I think the hope between a number of users here (Including me) was that with new ownership, we might get that consideration and willingness to give a heads up when major changes were coming down the line, and a great many of us are disappointed that wasn't the case here. That's most (but not all) of what's got me kinda bent out of shape over the decision.

Apologies if I overstepped in any of this!

That goes both ways. Whatever grand plan they might have, it depends on having people visit their site.

Yeah, something we should all bear in mind. Hell, we're lucky to have the forum, remember all the doom and gloom a very short while back?

Right, but you have to be able to stock your shelves to sell anything. When the product can simply remove itself from stock at will, providing a reason to stay becomes important.

I dunno, as someone who mostly lurked in R&P that thread made me sad, and was a good example of why I broadly agree with shutting down R&P despite being personally attached to it. I think we should be able to have political discussion without people trying to claim white supremacist murder is just some kind of edgy shitposting to own the libs.

This is not an excuse to restart the discussion by the way. If you still believe in that position, I don't actually want to talk about it.

Seems topics which were flagged with "[ Politics ]" are getting closed now, interested to see where this is leading then.

They were, and then a bit later, unclosed again.

(Saying this in part for people who didn't see that and who otherwise might wonder what bluegate is talking about)
