Words are just Words but there are laws in place against inciting hate, hate speeches and abusing people verbally. It infringes human rights which supercedes the dipshits instigating right to free speech. What part of this don't people get? Calling some guy a dickhead is not an offence but going on a triade against someone because of their race, creed or anything else is a crime. If you can't understand this your opinion is based on fallacy and not fact, and is inferior to someone elses who knows the laws and the rights of others. If it was my opinion all gay people have AIDS and masturbation makes you blind, is it valid because it's my opinion? No it fucking isn't. I might want it to be with this hypothetical opinion i don't have but that isn't the same thing. Christ some people need to think before talking out of their arse.

Basically this. Free Speech extends till it infringes on others rights. She verbally assaulted others, which extends beyond what is covered by free speech.

Put simply, the right to be respected as a human being trumps the right to free speech.

*edited to imply I support this guy.

You know what, I really have had it with people who put immigration with declining unemployment and make a perfect and unbreakable cause and effect.. grr.. they are probably linked but immigrants are not a major source of why we have problems in the UK currently, and since its the economy thats gone down the drain its only a matter of time until some chap with a funny mustache whips out the blame Jews for everything card..

Long story short.. she has the right to deny she did it, does it really matter if she stands in the way of what is pretty much pure evidence of.. well is it a crime.. anyway this really is a non-story, if you want more of this just go down a local country pub.. we're all a little bit racist out here

My opinion of the Escapist users has crashed dramatically after revisiting this thread.

Perspective? Screw it, my stance is the only correct one.

Human element? Screw it, my stance is the only correct one.

Empathy? SHE SHOULD BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUURN, REGARDLESS OF WHAT TRIGGERED THIS.

Reading through the thread before attacking a user? SCREW THAT, I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY!

And now Treblaine is down for the count. I'd say I'm disappointed, but "disgusted" is a good deal closer to it.

The plot thickens... as in that woman makes herself look even more thick than she looked before. Denying it after being shown the footage right in front of a court of law? Moron. If she really is distraught by all of this then she deserves it. Maybe it will force her to realise what a bigoted idiot she is.

Gotta love English hospitality.

Nah, I'm just kidding. We still love you guys. We got the RCAF back to show you how much we love you.
Is that the video that was circulating around facebook, that link ain't working.
It's working for me. Try looking it up on Youtube.[/quote

Ok, but is that the girl in court?
No. The woman linked in the video above is not the person who is being brought up on charges. The person being brought up on charges is Emma West.

immigrants (Polish, Pakistani whatever) don't respect our culture, and the way we do things over here, and we are suppose to respect their culture when we go to their country...pah. They walk the streets in public in the UK wearing Burkas like it's the middle of Delhi or something, it's not on at all.

The money is all they care about, respecting everyone else, and hell even speaking basic english comes second to them.
Woah!
What the hell is that supposed to mean?

I didn't realise we're judging people because they wear headgear now. I mean, I understand the immigration and the loss of jobs but that comment is completely out of line.
not really, the headgear shows that they are not respecting Uk culture.
Please define how people from other cultures should respect British culture when they enter, or even settle in the United Kingdom.

Crying because She knows she's gonna be hated by, pretty much the world now, and because She's gonna be in deep shit with fines/prison etc.

She's not crying because of what She did, or because She feels sorry for the passengers and her Son, She feels sorry for herself.

Mt heart goes out to that little Boy, I hope he's being looked after a family member or something who doesn't share this Woman's views and is just loved.
I don't know. I don't know what they'll do with her. But I'd like to see something done (what I don't know yet)

And it's hardly mere words; She verbally assaulted people with racial slurs. And she endangered her child, anyone on that tram could of attacked her and injured him (good job they know not to go to her low level) I don't see why the public should have to put up with something like that while on public transport.
And that's terrible.

But yelling mean, horrible, cruel things at people shouldn't really be illegal, shouldn't it?
As a point of fact, she is violating British law [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Order_Act_1986] as she makes statements that are meant to stir up "racial hatred. The whole issue over whether she should or not is a murky one. As for myself, I work hard to be tolerant of all people, even bigots. I grudgingly would give people the right to speak out in myriad ways, and I would protect the rights of people willing to speak, even racists.

Look closely class, because what we have here is nit (sic) a hero. What we have is an utterly fucking worthless human being, a prick whose presence makes us all the poorer. Unfortunately, she is also symptomatic of the diseased culture of intolerance and bigotry still so depressingly prevalent in the modern day.
Don't you get all fuzzy on the inside when you realize Emma has, at least, one child?

We're supposed to care what made her show what a rotten racist piece of shit she is? Because quite frankly short of making a public apology and recanting her blatant racism there's little reason to think that isn't her actual belief.
If you think that someone deserves the worst because of some words of no consequence that they spoke, then you're no better than the very racists that you're ranting against, and you're just as ignorant, and just as hateful as they are.

Racism is a product of irrational thinking and misplaced fears, and the only way to change that, is to educate people, and prove them wrong, not by inciting more hate.

Whilst I hate this ignorant waste of organic material as much as the next guy, this shouldn't be illegal. Had she ranted on about how awful they were as human beings for any other reason, it wouldn't be, and that's racism in and of itself. Also, free speech should be a right reserved for every person on Earth.
Hate Speech isn't covered by Free Speech.
I know this is the UK we are talking about here, so my point is moot in this case because they don't have the first amendment. Regardless, free speech is something Americans have because we want to be able to say anything we want, especially if that means hating the government. Drawing lines between what you are allowed to hate is arbitrary: Hate speech is hate speech, so if it's going to be illegal one way, it should be illegal all ways.

What's wrong with not trying to pretend I said something I didn't? Is it too hard for you? Is that your problem? Or is it something... else about you? You know?

Because I don't think anyone with an IQ above 10 sees me saying that they deserve the worst. But apparently there are people who have to make shit up and I wonder what exactly is wrong with them.
You did notice the "if" at the beginning of that sentence, right? God forbid someone use a hypothetical to illustrate a point.
And the point was, that disregarding the causes for racism is counterproductive to rooting out racism, something that seems to be lost on the many Escapist members who've called for blood in this thread.

At this point in the womans life, no amount of education will change her way of thinking, her kid can be saved though, I hope whatever the U.K's form of child protective services is is looking into this, I haven't heard mention of her kid

Oh well if you were just trying to defend the woman because you're racist that's horrible. Notice the if at the front and let's ignore the fact there are implications to stupid statements like that.
Perhaps I didn't phrase my original post as well as I could have, but surely it's not that hard to keep track of the context of the conversation, is it?

Disregarding the causes? Oh don't make me laugh. As if they're going to listen if we just root out the causes, which are hardly simple things.
That's your opinion.

I happen to live in a country that has a huge share of racists, and, while I won't go into detail with this, allow me to tell you, that when you challenge someone's perception on the issue with the right arguments, and if the person is even remotely open minded, they'll often see reason.
