Norse gods were white because the people who worshipped them were white. Period.
So ofcourse someone is bugged about it. Even I find it fricking stupid. But do I care that much about it? Nah. A shit movie where a black dude plays Thor? Sounds like something I wouldnt even rent.

I am not racist, but come on, its their god. In those times I bet that they werent thinking that they were praying for a god that is from another ethnic. It wouldnt make sence for africans to pray for a chinese god.

The problem in here, at least for me, its not the fact that he is black, its the fact that he is from a diferent race of the people who praise him.

I dont know who would feel offended by that btw, it just seems like he is in there to avoid the movie to be full of white people (to not be a racist movie that forgets others ethnic groups).

It just doesnt make all that sence.

Thor black? but thor is always portrayed as white skin with red(mythology) or blond(comics) hair. he's Scandinavian in origin, for crying out loud. why not make him the way he's forever been portrayed as?

I think the person you quoted means that they would prefer a white character because in the original source material he was white. It would be like if Luke Cage was potrayed as white even though in the source material he's always been black. Nothing to do with racism. It's the CCC fuckers who say portraying him as black is bad because "black are bad".

It's their right to be honest, I still refuse to watch the whitewashed Prince of Persia. Not that I'm racist, I fucking hate racists, it's just Hollywood fucking with the natural order of things. Wouldn't be surprised if this is a planned publicity stunt.

Three thoughts:

1) It's just a movie. Mix it up, who cares. Thor is one of the more awkward heroes to tackle, and I've never seen it done without cringing.
2) Keeping point #1 in mind, would everyone be okay with the Black Panther being played by a white guy?
3) For that matter, what about white guys playing African supernatural figures/characters/whatever? Would anyone give a crap? They're myths anyway.

People hated Avatar and called M.Knight a racist b/c he had very little asians in what arguably should have been an all-asian movie (Avatar: The Last Airbender). Why aren't people willing to cast certain races in roles that call for a certain race? If Mr Sulu was played by, say James Brolin, wouldn't people have a right to be disappointed? When Hollywood decides to make the Barack Obama story, what if he's played by a Edward James Olmos? You can bet people'd be pissed. So why not just cast people appropriate to the role?

Casting a black guy as a Norse god seems like a stretch, because it's a huge stretch. It's dumb. You know what's also dumb? Having a viking movie where all the vikings have Scottish accent. How to tame a Dragon was cute, yes, and yes, it was a cartoon, but if you're going to give them all Scotch brogues, why not have the cartoon set in Scotland?

Hollywood is dumb. They just are. All the howling in the world isn't going to change the movie, so in the grand scheme of things, who cares?

Well, technically all Nordic people were predisposadly White, and their gods were depicted as being Nordic, so they too were White by standard.

But, unless this was meant to be a 100% Historically accurate creation, it shouldnt matter.

I probably won't see the movie, but it's more because this casting choice sounds like Hollywood not caring, meaning they probably won't care about the rest of the movie's production either. As a person who grew up with http://comicwiki.dk/images/Valhalla1_2oplag.jpg I'll say that it's an artistic lisence they are more than allowed to use.

Also, the majority of the myths were collected by Christian clergy back in the day and Scandinavia didn't become Christian nations till around 950-1100.

You know what, It might just be me, but I'm unsure this is a faithful recreation of real Norse lore. Even with only a minor amount of reading i am yet to find one reference to the incredible hulk, Spiderman captain America or infact any of the avengers or Xmen within the pages of any history book on the subject.

As I said, I some how don't think Marvel are or were every trying to create a perfect recreation of Norse lore, if they were you'd need a hell of a lot more incest.

Actually, one of the many, many things I love about Kenneth Branagh is that he casts without considering race. He cast Denzel Washington and Kenau Reves as brothers in Much Adu About Nothing, and it was AWESOME.

I had no interest in the Thor movie before reading this (I never read the comics, and there wasn't a Saturday morning cartoon of it when I was a kid), apart from it being based vaguly on Norse myth which sounded kinda cool. Now, Thor is a must-see movie for me. So, good job to those racist asshats, for lo, their hate brought this bit of total awesome to my attention, and so ticket sales will go up. Where's your boycot now, huh? **pfft**

Saying things like "The Norse Gods are just mythology and they dont exist"
And just to have some relevance to the actual discussion thus far, astruar dont believe that the gods are exactly how they've been portrayed even after all this time. The descriptions we have of them are meerly the closest we can come to understanding what the gods are like.
