It seems out of place for a black man in nordic mytholigy. And some people up here still pratice worship of those Gods, they might take offence. In general it´s a bad idea to stray from the original material.

Actually having read alot of Norse Mytholigy, im NOT gonna see this movie. And only because i know it will NEVER honor it´s roots.

AND Thank you Marvel for the mass rape
of my culture and roots.
ninja'd, though i might see on tv just because i can pretend it has nothing to do with the actual gods and is just fan-fiction. but i wouldnt pay for it

On the one hand, it does seem an odd choice to select a black man to play a Norse god.

On the other hand, if this was a well-reasoned casting choice, and not simply pandering to minorities, then I'd give the folks in charge of casting my vote of confidence.

In other words, quality of performance trumps aesthetics, and that's all there is to it.

I don't really know what to say here, if I was to take your extremely biased and patronizing article as gospel then I would both be superior and angered by these people having an opinion.

However, Norse gods were once part of a real religion. If I am supposed to respect Muslims not wanting me to draw their Prophet etc etc. Then why is the Norse religion up for interpretation and bastardisation?

The Norse gods would probably have all been white, lets admit it. While Marvel or DC or whoever is making this is whoring them out for consumers no matter what manner they depict them, why is the guy black?

Why bother making them Norse gods if there's nothing Norse about them? Its like a less ridiculous minstrel show, except I'm supposed to hate whitey either way.

Of course realistically I do not give a shit, as long as the black guy wasn't hired for the sake of diversity, I'm merely trying to be open-minded. Calling people Racists because they want history preserved is ridiculous, calling people racists because they discriminate is ridiculous. While these guys are probably racists, I just get sick of seeing the term thrown around so much, and thrown around as if it is an instant checkmate/autoWordForWin.
Remember it isn't my article, if you look at the bottom I say it came from comicsalliance

....Yeah, all this does is make me want to see an American Gods/Anansi Boys movie, where gods from every pantheon run abound.

Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing that anyway, because it would be fucking awesome.

You know what's also dumb? Having a viking movie where all the vikings have Scottish accent. How to tame a Dragon was cute, yes, and yes, it was a cartoon, but if you're going to give them all Scotch brogues, why not have the cartoon set in Scotland?
the author grew up on the Inner Hebrides

those are Scottish islands with Norse and Viking history

what you don't know and why this makes very little sense to you is that Scotland is at least in part almost a Nordic country (certainly in relation to territory of the Lord of the Isles http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_of_the_Isles )

so there you go: vikings with Scots accents make more sense than you knew :p

what doesn't make any sense in that film is the fact the kids have no accents while all the adults do...
I blame the MTV. Those darn kids and their music... :p

With what you said in mind, wouldn't they be Scots with Norse accents? It'd probably depend on the dominant culture at the time (town by town/region by region, wouldn't it?) and I don't remember any kilts in that movie. Hmmmm......

Oh, fucking hell.
I don't know much about the Thor universe of Marvel, but I didn't think that any of the gods were actually the original gods of the Norseman. I always thought they were reincarnations of the old gods. Of course, I never read more than three or four Thor comic books anyway, so I could be wrong.
My only concern here is this: did they select the actor because he's a good actor and he provided an interesting take on the character, or did they select him just to add a minority to the cast in the interest of being "multicultural"? Because I honestly hate when they do that. Now, if he's actually good and his take on the part is really interesting (and not just a compilation of Hollywood stereotypes, as most black characters tend to be in movies), then they can cast whoever they want.

Not really as God (the Christian one) doesn't really have a set race being the God of everyone. The norse gods were different (not to mention nowhere on his scale of power.
Of course Bruce Almighty was pretty terrible to be honest, the best bit was the skirt blowing up and the trailers gave that away

I don't get this at all....

Ok, so, if a white guy portrays a black person in a movie: the movie is racist. But if a black guy portrays a white person in a movie: anyone that doesn't like it is racist?

This is one of the few instances where I would actually be against changing the race of the character. Thor is a Norse god, he should be Norse. If there was a movie about an African pagan god we wouldn't have a white guy playing him now would we? It just doesn't make sense.

What a peculiar thing to say.

If the movie were to be 'Passion of Christ' (need to double check that title) and you were to say this I would expect a probation. However because these are norse gods, who have fallen out of vogue, this is okay.

I'm not advocating you get in trouble but it is strange that you think the issue here is completely bypassed by reminding us that it is intended as a work of fiction.
i wouldnt see an issue with a passions of the christ with a black jesus.

but from what i understand this is a fictional movie based on a comic book where the god isnt the actual god its a character called a gods name.

i really just dont see the issue here. if the actor can act what does it matter what colour skin they have? i would prefer a good black actor over a white bad actor.

maybe its just that im not racist or religious and thats why i dont see the issue.
