I mean, EVERY song is like that, it's lame.
I'm curious as to what song you are referring. Also didnt their last album come out in like... '99?

They aren't really against the government, they just pretend to do that to sell albums to anxsty teens who want to form trouble for the "estabalishment" because they think it will make girls like them, truth is, they are all just tools. Also, Tool is a good band, unlike RATM.
I don't think they're pretending... I mean they pretty actively support causes. I dont see them to be as much 'down with this government' as much as they've been like 'people are suffering injustices, help them?'
They just seemed to see through a lot of the bullshit. Nobody else was doing it in the 90s.

Let's take a long at the lyrics to one of their songs to get and idea for why I don't like them.

Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses
Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses
Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses
Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses
Huh!

(I think they're claiming that the police has active or former member of KKK in it. I was unaware of this but I can believe it.)

Killing in the name of!
Killing in the name of

(Killing who in who's name? What's going on.)

And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
But now you do what they told ya
Well now you do what they told ya

(Who does what because who told them? Why does the phrase repeat so many times)

Those who died are justified, for wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites
You justify those that died by wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites
Those who died are justified, for wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites
You justify those that died by wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites

Who died? Is this a reference to the cop who killed while he was beating a black man up?

Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses
Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses
Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses
Some of those that work forces, are the same that burn crosses
Uggh!

Killing in the name of!
Killing in the name of

(Is he talking about the sphere of consent? What's he saying)
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya
And now you do what they told ya, now you're under control (7 times)
And now you do what they told ya, now you're under control
And now you do what they told ya, now you're under control
And now you do what they told ya, now you're under control
And now you do what they told ya, now you're under control
And now you do what they told ya, now you're under control
And now you do what they told ya, now you're under control
And now you do what they told ya!

You justify those that died by wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites
Those who died are justified, for wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites
You justify those that died by wearing the badge, they're the chosen whites
Come on!

(This is where they decide to stop making a critique and start throwing a temper tantrum. This is worse than Ani Difranco Who's doing what?)

Yeah! Come on!

Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me
Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me
Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me
Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me
Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me

I don't like RATM because I find that whole nu-metal/rap crossover style of music a bit irritating and done-to-death. Back when they came out in 1993 it sounded old-hat to me even back then, and it's sounding even more dated now, at least to my ears.

Also I don't like their lyrics. It's not the actual message that I dislike, but the delivery. (An important distinction, folks.) They're okay in the choruses, but I think Zack is a poor rapper who has trouble getting good 'flow' going. He just doesn't have much imagination and his rhymes aren't very clever or interesting, all they do for me is fill up space until the chorus kicks in. If you compare the RATM albums to Street Sweeper Social Club (Tom Morello's new project with Boots Riley of The Coup), the music sounds similar but the raps are of higher quality. I don't like SSSC either because it's still that same played-out rap/nu-metal hybrid that I got bored of by 1994 but at least the raps are listenable now.

Well, to be fair to RATM, you've picked probably THE most lyrically simple of all of their songs. Most of their stuff has a lot more lyrics and less repetition in it than that.

All Adults do not hate them.

Besides, if they do hate them, its probably more because their beats are repetitive. Rage has a strong message with a strong point, but I prefer to listen to music for the entertainment value. Their rhythms never cut it for me and that is probably what turns off most adults who like country or pop or radio rock. Its just not their style. As for political views, I make my own. Same reason I'm sick of Greenday and Incubus now. Way to politically focused. Everyone already knew Bush sucked. No need to make an entire CD about it.

It's not the repetition. It's the lack of a critique of any one thing which. I keep using the words "temper tantrum" but I can't think of any other way to word it. By comparison here are the lyrics from one of my favorite song writers.

Well in america they say we have freedom of speech, but a rock/rap band called rage against the machine. They are one of those bands that their songs go against the government and all adults seem to hate them because their against the government. But why?Why is it wso bad to be against the government. Can someone explain this too me?
They are a bunch of shitfaced commie hacks who only a while ago tried to start a Revolution using their fans. Only thing is hardly anyone showed up and they looked like tools. They don't seem to realize they don't have the charisma nor good enough music to make teens want to Revolt for the Red.

Yes, but RATM have songs like that also, that are much clearer, like what you have linked. You can't just get their most lyrically simple song, ("Killing In The Name" is sort of RATM's equivalent of Queen's "We Will Rock You" - it's an "anthem", not a "down to specifics" song) and paint their entire output with that brush.

Wow, I can't believe I'm posting in a thread and sticking up for RATM! I really don't like them! But I don't think your criticism of them is very informed. In fact, I would say that RATM most of the time go the other way and get annoyingly specific about what they are criticising. I would have welcomed more ambiguity in their lyrics, overall. "Killing In The Name" is definitely an exception to the rule for them, lyrically. Most of their songs don't just have a few lines repeated all the time, but endless tedious raps that get right to the heart of the issue until you just couldn't care less.

The riff in Killing in the Name of plain rocks... it almost excuses them from being such self righteous, annoying people.

Everyone I know loves Rage Against The Machine. I'm not really into them.
Seriously, the rap/rock thing is so overdone. I am vaguely aware that RATM was one of the first to do it, but it still bores me.

Well, as you can see from my avatar, I love them. They were the first proper rock band I ever listened to, back when I was 11, and I've loved them for 7 years now-undeniably my favourite band ever, probably until I die. However, I have become slightly disillusioned with them-they are probably all pretty rich, don't carry through a lot of what they say (though I know that at least when they were first together there's been arrests of various members for demonstrating), and it certainly seems now that they don't really care for the music, and I have major doubts that they will play any more shows.

I think what was best about them is the anger of the music, the riffs, though fairly similar, were still awesome to rock out to, and the fact that the establishment and various news channels (specifically Fox News) were so bloody scared of them because they were essentially telling people the truth, which people then desperately tried to counter by making up crap about them and turning them into an evil band that actively and explicitly promotes violence.

Yeah, except they broke up before he even took office. You obviously don't seem to know much about them.
Well, first of all, it was an example. Second of all, I'm sorry, I meant George H.W. Bush, BUT! third, they broke up in 1999.? huh, they broke up in 2000. Testify came out as a single then and I remember when they broke up, 2000 (wikipedia says so too) And had they broken up in 1999, they could easily have hated George W. Bush, because if you know anything about politics you would know that the candidates start campaigning at lest a year before the election.
That being said I do enjoy Rage's music, I just question their lyrical variety and what not.
Obviously, my example was a gross exaggeration, but many of RATM's members are active W haters. They just have the balls (or lack of creativity) to say it. I just dislike political music.

IMO rap/rock is overdone and Linkin park blends rap into rock/metal the best so people try and copy em.
But how can a genre really be 'overdone'? Why isn't metal overdone, or other genres? Are you saying it in a gimmick/angle sense? If so, there are plenty of people who love the fusion, I personally don't see it as overdone. I can agree with the down with the Government thing being almost cliché.

That being said, what do people think of Flobots? I quite like them.

Rage against the Machine has no idea what it wants to be, Rap, Rock, or Metal. Hence, Nu-Metal (AkA crap to true metalheads) was born.

The Flobots, at least, know what they want.

A decade late here?

Well it's something more interesting to write songs about than love.

What? You're criticising them for being unique?

Still a few people in this thread seem to be saying that RATM weren't talented, which is simply not true.
