Finally, I've managed to think of something worth making a thread over.

What tips do you have to give to people about games you've rigorously played? Tips that you have come up with in the multiple playthroughs and many hours invested into a game that you recommend to people that have worked well for you and can't be found in a game guide.

I'll go first:

Bioshock 2: There's a room in the Siren Alley level in the Pink Pearl resort, on the third floor with dead hooker hanging from the ceiling. Save your game before you enter this room because it sometimes locks you in.

Bad Company 2: When playing online, I find the most reliable pistol to be the WWII pistol.

Just Cause 2: The map is frikin' huge.

Your turn.

inb4 cake is a lie.

Borderlands: Every aspect of the gun is important. Pick a 50 damage machine pistol/SMG with 12.5 fire rate over a 70 damage with 5.5 or so. Don't judge solely on damage/elements.

Half-Life 2: Headcrab. Do not apply directly to the forehead.

Oblivion: ALWAYS TAKE RESTORATION MAGIC AS A MAJOR SKILL

It levels slow, and the higher your skill, the cheaper the spells cost and the better spells you get, which means more healing.
Every class benefits from Restoration.

Timesplitters 2: The Bricks secondary fire is far more effective than the primary fire.
Ugh. Brings back bad memories of the window breaking minigame.

God of War 3: the Nemesis Blades are your friend.

Final Fantasy 13: when in doubt, Diversity.

Resident Evil 5 Mercenaries: "Gods sake don't camp, we've 30 seconds to go and we need to find more timers"
"Holding down circle so your character cries out when they're dying won't help because I know exactly where you are and I'm already on my way"

Oh and try combos; shoot a few rounds into their legs until they stagger forward then initiate a special move from behind them (yeah I can already hear the sniggers heh) as odds are it'll be a fatal finishing move and saves ammo unless it's Rebecca's Rump Shaker which just makes me laugh so much for how ridiculous it looks

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete: When about to leave first town, make sure to talk to Alexs mother before talking to the nearer father. Father ends event, mother gives 1000 gold (that's a bar of soap ;P).

Xenogears: Use ChuChu in party to fight the Deus sphere that drains oil. ChuChu might seem useless, but is the only character whose 'Gear' form has stats directly related to character stats. With leveling, she can be pretty good.

Splinter Cell: Conviction: You can cover one noise with another. Grenades thrown a distance away from youself can mask the sound of blasting someone in the face with your shotgun. Just don't throw the grenade nearby yourself or you'll get spotted anyway.

Persona 4: Romance Naoto. Not so much a tip as a suggestion.

In Modern Warfare, during the ferris wheel segment (you know what I'm talking about), just hide in the bumper car booth, shoot anyone who gets close, and throw back any grenades that get in.

Super Mario 64 - Sorry dude, those stairs really DO go on forever, go and get more stars

Fallout 2 - Play a female. There is no male NPC, even children, that won't give you every item they have in order to attempt to sleep with you. You have nothing to lose but your self-respect.

ET for the Atari 2600- strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Starfox 64 - Do a Barrel ROLL!

Portal: Don't get too attached to the Companion Cube. Treat your relationship as purely professional, and it won't hurt as much when...it happens.

In Tatsunoko VS Capcom some of the best combos can be pulled off by catching an opponent as they fall.
When a character falls they fall 4 ways.

With their Back facing down, the most common fall.
Falling Forward(Face Down).
and a Spinning fall.
And a strait down fall.

You can catch an opponent who is falling Face Down, Spinning, and Strait down(though its harder to do).

A character falls forward if they get thrown into the wall by certain kinds of attacks.
This fall is kinda slow and easy to catch.

A spinning fall also happens from certain kinds of attacks like the end of a Hyper Combo or a Dashing attack.
A little harder to catch but if you use a Crossover Counter the opponent will be thrown up by your countering partner and start a Spin Fall, this is a great way to practice your timing.

And a Strait down fall is probably the hardest to catch.
Iv only seen this fall after LV3 Hyper Combos like Ryu's Shin Shoryuken.
But(using Ryu as an Example)
After He uses it the opponent will fly upward and then fall to the ground.
Most people can use a Hadoken to hit the opponent just before they hit the ground but, its extremely hard(for me at least).
the easiest way to keep the combo going for a Strait Down fall is to use a attack like Shinku Hadoken to catch the opponent as they fall.
This will add some more Damage and Rack up the hits!

I hope someone finds my advice useful!

[sup]man i play this game a lot...[/sup]

Shooters: Don´t reload while strafing around corners, use cover whenever possible, use grenades on groups, don´t search high places with a machinegun, instead, stay close to ground level. That way, when multiple enemies advance, you can just mow through them, instead of picking them off one by one...

Every game ever: Don't stand in the open.

Bad Company 2: Don't camp the UAV station, it has a long respawn time, and you could be out there getting kills!
If you're planning on camping the heli spawn (maybe with your squad), don't bother if someone another group is. Go off and get objectives while the heli distracts the enemies for you.
