A real lightsaber has hit the stores in the UK

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/5/20100616/tuk-deadly-star-wars-lightsabre-sold-to-45dbed5.html

A handheld laser likened to a Star Wars lightsabre and so powerful it can instantly blind and "set fire to skin and other body parts" can be bought online and shipped to the UK.

The device - with a beam 1,000 times stronger than sunlight on the skin - is touted by makers as "the most dangerous laser ever created".

Trading standards chiefs said they were "seriously concerned" about the sale of the model and have warned against its use.

Well I bet those get banned pretty soon!

The price tag isn't much when you look at how much other things cost... for a deadly (well at the least very dangerous) weapon the price is rather reasonable :p

People already do that with relatively weak lasers on helicopters, I can envisage the people poised by the security fence at Heathrow!

Its a incredibly irresponsible for the manufacturer to market that device to the general public. the least the UK could do is block the website IP.

Ah well, at least it will modernise chav knife-fights.

I like the warning in the product description:

"This class 4 beam will cause immediate and irreversable retinal damage"

"set fire to skin"

"cause cancer"

I think some kids are going to have an awesome Christmas!

Distribution of this item to the general public as well as possession of one without a special weapons permit or industrial-grade license needs to be made punishable with prison time. People who say they want this as a Star Wars toy or any other ridiculous reason should get an immediate reality check... this thing is not a toy. The existence of this thing is bad enough already, but the low price is the cyanide icing on the cake.
I am fucking scared by this news, let me make that perfectly clear. Instant and permanent loss of eyesight. Infliction of high-grade burns. Highly likely formation of cancerous tissue.
People, wake the fuck up. This is anything but awesome. This is terrible, and I am severely frightened at the prospect of the things that could happen if this item were to fall into the hands of irresponsible dickwads or, God forbid, a person with truly murderous intent.

I find it insane that they are selling "the most dangerous laser ever created" to people over the internet... how does this not immediately sound like a (million) disaster(s) waiting to happen?

Yes now instead of accidentally killing someone nearby they can kill someone streets away.

I'll take three! And now to find all those naysayers who said lasers would never make practical weapons....

just a question:

what if a group of people, lets call them "terrorists", will each buy this device, go into a place filled with people, and just go nuts?
shit hits the fan, i presume?

EDIT: since somebody has to say it: the future is here... and its fucking stupid
