"Realism" as a selling point should go die

I keep seeing games that spout that they most realistic game out and yet have only a visual relation to realism, which doesn't make for good games IMO.

Real Life: You get shot in the leg, go to the hospital for around a month.

"Realistic" games: You get shot in the leg, you move on as if nothing happened except you have slightly blurred vision (which only happens after you lose more than 10 seconds of blood) and you can just sit behind cover (for some games anyway) and your injury will go away, and if that isn't there, then any medkit will insta-heal you for a set amount.

I agree. Go play ArmA II. Then come back and we'll talk about realism.

If you get shot in the leg, you lose the use of that leg. They made some concessions for the sake of fun, but if you crank it up to expert difficulty and use ACE II... Well, you may as well enlist.

Even the bread-and-butter ArmA II is built on Virtual Battlespace (VBSII) technology - used to train real soldiers around the world.

ARMA 2 notwithstanding because I haven't played it, the term 'realistic' should not be thrown around in the gaming world.

I don't like all that much realism in my games. I often play games to get away from real life. Besides, realism isn't all that great anyway.

My sentiments exactly. Screw realism.

Go play Arma II. When you get back then you are allowed to whine about realism in games.
Agreed. Play Arma II. It's the sort of game that happens when they go "Every game ever made is for pussies! This is realism!" Then they make a game all about realism and then the really hardcore guys still complain.

I agree with the Arma2 comments. Here's what happened to me when I played Arma 2:
Start mission, get behind cover, peek out of cover a bit too far and for too long, get shot in the arm twice, incapacitated and needing a medic or I'll die horribly.

People making ranty posts about what game developers should or shouldn't do should go outside.

Actually face the consequences of getting shot in Arma II...
Go on a nigh-indestructible bio-weapon rampage and destroy a few city blocks in Prototype...
Decisions, decisions...

Bingo. If I wanted a realistic game, I'd join the army or something.

To quote Yahtzee roughly,

If a game was truly realistic you would get shot, lose both your legs spend a few months lying up in an Afghani hospital before getting blow up by an IED.

If i wanted realism I would join the army, but I dont want total realism in games and thats why Im alive at the moment

Realism isn't something that I've really ever had a problem with before. Maybe that's because I play more RPGs than anything but still...

I do think I agree with you. Realism is nice to some extent but when they go overboard with it, then it's too much and kinda kills the game.

What was that war game called again, operation flashpoint or something? Nonetheless, you get shot and die pretty fast.

I have to agree with this sentiment

::NEWSFLASH::

MARKETING DIVISIONS USE BUZZ WORDS THAT ARE NOT ENTIRELY INDICATIVE OF THE ACTUAL PRODUCT.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE THAT YOU'RE NOT WORTH IT JUST BECAUSE YOU USE L'OREAL, AND IT IS POSSIBLE THAT GILLETTE IS NOT THE VERY BEST A MAN CAN GET.
