*gasp* No way he can be insulting his fans! He's been such a friendly man towards them before!

I doubt Yahtzee played less than 2 hours. I think it's just the fans being butthurt over the fact that he didn't appreciate the game.
hehehe, that first bit made me laugh.

but according the second bit, Yahtzee said that the game didn't really deserve to exist, so therefore if the game was that bad, then there would be next to no fans.

I don't think yahtzee played the game for very long, whether its because he's been very busy with his bar, whether he genuinly thought the game was going to continue about not being a monster hunter or whether its because he had a review for another game, hadn't finished that yet and thought "Crap... i'll just hit on a wii game this week, no-one will care", the fact still remains he didn't play it long, which is why his review isn't a very accurate depiction of the game.

however, i don't hold it against him, i mean absolutly nothing to him as an individual, so me putting on my angry-fan pants isn't going to change anything. (would be cool if he did a second review though, then he could rag on some of the combat and monster problems&bugs rather than the opening movie. knowing him, out of pure stubborness and sticking to his point of "i'm not going to listen to the fans", that is not going to happen) besides, after watching the review a few times, i found it funny anyway :p

I think it is very unprofessional. You can't say "well it was so boring that he couldn't handle any more" because his job is to play video games. I can't spend 2 hours on an essay and hand that in because I couldn't handle any more.

Why does it matter so much what he thinks of the game? It shouldn't make such a big impact on everyone. His reviews are more or less just for laughs, not much else.

While I'm not nearly as funny or productive as he is, I'm in much the same situation of Yahtzee in that I started playing games in a slightly post-PET computer era and watched as games reached a relative high point before plunging into a casual-friendly orgy of selling out.

Yahtzee pokes fun at games, but simultaneously makes a lot of points about the ridiculous state the industry has brought itself to. He doesn't respond to you monkeys in regards to your various complaints because, more often than not, his points are completely over your heads.

Here's a hint: he doesn't give flat out thumbs up or thumbs down on games, but rather identifies ups and down with their individual parts. This apparently causes the vast majority of the people replying to his articles to go cross-eyed in confusion, lashing out at something or becoming overly beholden to it as proof of the games' merit, because by and large the Escapist forums are mostly occupied with people still in grade school [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.190621] whose capacity for truly critical thought has yet to emerge.

Lately, I think he's been making less serious points [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/2-Psychonauts] and more fellatio jokes because he's given up a lot of hope his audience has a clue. Monster Hunter was a pretty bad match for him considering he's mentioned in the past he's not a JRPG fan nor a multiplayer game fan, and Monster Hunter is basically a JRPG with unusual multiplayer capabilities.

[HEADING=3]HE'S A FUCKING CRITIC[/HEADING]

If you expect a review, you're going to be disappointed. His sole purpose is to make bad jokes about negative aspects of a game.
Unless the game is form Valve.

Oh yes Yahtzee, continue blowing off some of Valve's Steam.

(Yes, I replied simply because I wanted to make that joke)

This thread is stupid.

Yahtzee didn't like Monster Hunter. The base mechanics don't change throughout the game, just the challenge. It's not an insult to anybody; a man in Australia didn't like a game, it happens.

What do you guys think? Should Yatzee have spent more time playing? Do you feel like it is an insult to his fans?
There's a reason the video comes with a comment box attached. Your opinion is not more important than other people's, and is there really a point to having ANOTHER thread on the SAME subject? This conversation is already ongoing in that particular thread.

That said, and since I'm posting anyways, as far as I know his "method" involves playing considerably more than 2 hours, and most of what I've read saying he only played about 2 hours were based on conjectures at best.

That said x2, I'm personally an apologist of the idea that "it gets better later on" isn't good enough. If you test drive a car and it sucks you don't buy it based on the dealer telling you "it gets better after 2000 kms". There are "slow starters", and there are "non starters". GTA IV is a game that takes a while to hit critical mass, but it never stops being fun, even in the beginning when it's taking it's sweet time. Maybe not as fun as later, but it's still a good time. If a game just remains constantly not fun after several hours then maybe the idea that it somehow pulls a 180 out of it's ass and become good halfway through doesn't cut it.

That said (the return), game mechanics are very unlikely to change as the game goes on. Story and characterization might get deeper, gameplay might open up a bit, but if the basic game mechanics (which seems to be what Yahtzee spent the most time lampooning in his video) is bad it's not likely to get any better.

In short, I've never played Aion, but from looking at gameplay videos alone I can honestly tell you I'll never want to. Monster Hunter Tri seems to have left a similar impression.

He can play a game for however long he wants. Their his videos.

It also irritates me when people say he's "just a comedian". Yahtzee is not the Angry Video Game Nerd. He is not a character created for comedy purposes. Those are his actual opinions and he means every word he says, he just fills them with swear words and cock jokes so people will pay attention.

Yathzee hates every game that's why we watch and love to hate him. Apart from that one....

I find it quite funny how some people claim that it is "his job" to play through the entire game. Since you guys obviously have a copy of his employment contract, would you mind telling me how much he makes? I'd just like to know if being a professional internet troll allows for comfortable living...

Anyway, why does it matter if he played through the entire bloody thing? He's not handing out recommendations, he discusses some (more or less) valid points of criticism in his own funny way. If he were actually reviewing the game on its own merits, and not critiquing it*, I might agree, but he isn't.
He might talk about this in Extra Punctuation tomorrow, so be patient. If not, suck it up. Please.

*critiquing: it doesn't just mean review, but also a discussion of the points of interest and problems. Think of it as berating every issue, no matter how minor. At least that is what it probably means to him (and what brings him viewers)

The problem is people take his reviews WAY to seriously. His standard review is "It was shit...I kinda liked this bit...but it was shit" then you just add lots of penis jokes and over extended metaphors. His reviews aren't serious reviews they're just for fun. What he has said has never changed my opinion of a game.

I really would like to know how many of the Monster Hunter fans laughed when Yahtzee panned SSB and it's fans got angry. Guaranteed a good few of them yet now they are acting like it is a completely different situation. Critics will not always like the games you do and their opinions like everyones are always biased. Wheter this is because they dislike japanese games in general or did not like it enough to playthrough its still biased. Honestly what do expect from the man?

Why is it that everybody holds yahtzee in such a high regard so much as to love or hate him based upon what he says about a game? It's his job to do what he does if you don't like it turn the show off and move elsewhere on the site instead of watching then bitching later.

I don't pay the slightest bit of heed to what Yahtzee thinks of a game. If I did, chances are I'd never play a thing again - he shits on everything he comes across (almost).

I just play what I know and find out what I like. And then watch ZP for a bit of a laugh at whatever the latest game on the block is.

If we were to take Yahtzee serious, the only game which would sell at all would've been Saints Row 2.

I think people take Yahtzee far too seriously. He's here because he provides comedy, not because you should take all his reviews seriously and follow his every recommendation. If it's your favorite game or a game you really like, great! Don't pay attention to him and keep on enjoying your game. It's not like his opinion magically overshadows your own...
Exactly this! Yahtzee's reviews are for enjoyment--I've laughed more than I've been offended and if you watch his "Mailbag Showdown" review then you'll see that he says something along the lines of if you love a game, then everyone else's comments should not get to you. I've tried out some games because of his reviews and found that he's totally right. Gameplay's dodgy, game may be sucky, but I listen to his reviews for insight and laughs.

Ive been a long tme watcher of these videos, but have only just started looking at the message boards.
Im interested to know why people dont trust his opinions and compare his reliability to Fox News?

Granted, you obviously dont take every word seriously, but the dude clearly knows more about games than me. He obviously likes good games (Portal, Prince of Persia, Spiderman 2) doesnt mind mainstream games that havent been completely milked, and hates bad games.

When considering purchasing a game I'll weigh up opinions I receive from friends, reviews, fans, critics and indeed Mr Crowshaw.
I dont follow his words religiously but I do take into account the pros and cons he highlights about a game.
