If you don't mind me asking, what's the difference?

The 4kids dub has many stupid animation edits, bad voice acting, terrible replacement music, and butchers the entire story. The Funimation dub is much better, but both are inferior to watching it subbed.

OK, so essentially the more blind, unyielding fans an anime has, the more suspicious you should be of its quality. This is not to say that popular = bad, but you should be wary of the more popular titles often times.

Examples: Code Geass has been recommended to me by countless fans of the series, and I've watched two episodes so far and am unable to make myself watch any more. It might work for you, but to me the series is just awful. On the other hand, I'm a big fan of Deathnote, which is very popular... I never really saw the anime, but the manga was great. Gurren Lagann (or however you spell that :/) is another example of a popular anime that I love. I've met a lot of people who hated it, but I think that the over-the-top ridiculousness of it is brilliant.

So what you can take away from this, I think, is that anime quality is oftentimes very subjective, and you'll sort of have to find your own niche. Here are some titles that I personally enjoy quite a lot: Darker Than Black, Ergo Proxy, Gundam Wing (a little dated, but great plot), Gundam 00, Gurren Laggan, Noein, Paranoia Agent, Samurai 7, Ghost in the Shell... I think that any of those would be good starting points. If you don't mind some pacing flaws in your anime too much, Bleach is also a good choice.

Other than that, you pretty much just have to read plot summaries and reviews of different anime to see if you might like them, then I would recommend attempting to find the first couple of episodes online to make sure that there are no glaring flaws. If an anime passes both of these tests for you, it's probably worth checking out.

Peace.

If I just name off things I like I may end up leading you off in the completely wrong direction. Could you summarize what it is you do and don't like before I list some things off?

For some reason, no-one's thought to ask what kind of genres you're interested in.

The following are my recommendations. The links go to TVTropes pages which include spoiler-free summaries. Don't highlight boxes with no text, those are covering spoilers. The definition of mind screw is here [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MindScrew].

If it's comedy, I'd say FLCL [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/FLCL] (15+) (includes some action and minor violence), The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SuzumiyaHaruhi] (PG) (also includes some action), Lucky Star [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LuckyStar] (PG) (no violence, no action, no mind screwing. A gentle slice-of-life comedy), and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SayonaraZetsubouSensei] (18+) (the latter has not yet been licensed anywhere outside of Japan, due to being far too... well, Japanese. It's also rather dark at times).

If it's drama, I'd go with Last Exile [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LastExile] (PG13) (which involves a bit of a mind screw, and some action), Death Note [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DeathNote] (18+) (involves action and lots of mind screwing, and some violence), and Serial Experiments Lain [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SerialExperimentsLain] (15+) (a serious mind screw. Stick with it. It starts coming together near the end).

If it's action, I'd recommend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TengenToppaGurrenLagann] (PG13) (which also mixes comedy), Eureka Seven [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/EurekaSeven] (15+) (with a few elements of mind screw and minor violence), Samurai Champloo [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SamuraiChamploo] (18+) (includes some comedy, and gets dramatic at times. And is very violent), Cowboy Bebop [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CowboyBebop] (15+) (can get dramatic, and has some funny moments), Ghost in the Shell [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GhostInTheShell] (15+) (the movies: some drama as well, with a bit of a mind screw, and some violence), and the series GitS: Stand Alone Complex [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GhostInTheShellStandAloneComplex] (18+) (some drama as well, as well as some mind screwing and comedy, and a fair amount of violence), Black Lagoon [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BlackLagoon] (MA) (small amounts of comedy, and, in terms of violence... Hope you like red), Outlaw Star [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/OutlawStar] (15+) (slight violence, a fair amount of comedy), Soul Eater [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SoulEater] (15+) (some violence, a fair amount of mind screwing, and some drama. Also, lots of humour), and Martian Successor Nadesico [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MartianSuccessorNadesico] (PG13) (little violence, some mind screwing, lots of comedy).

Attention otaku in training
Let's see here, if you have somewhat the same tastes I do, and you probably do, since I have very diverse tastes, you'll like most of these.

Edit: Damn, KBKarma Beat me to it, I spent way to long making this list. I used wikipedia, it's accurate enough when it comes to manga and anime.

Full Metal Panic [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Full_Metal_Panic] - Big ass robots, excellent animation, very serious and hilarious at the same time, loved it!
Vandread [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vandread] - Best anime set in space I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of them, the plot alone makes it worth it, just for the insanity of it.
Trigun [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vandread] - On the planet of Gunsmoke lies an excellent adventure, With Vash the hilarious.
Death Note [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_note] - This one, is plain awesome, we need more people like Kira!
Welcome to the NHK [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vandread] - Well, I'm not sure why I like this one, maybe it's all the Dark Humor and the constant "misfortune" of the lead.
Elfen Lied [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elfen_lied] - This is one awesome anime, just avoid it if you have any issues with Blood, Gore, Torn limbs, Decapitations and Nudity.
Great Teacher Onizuka [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Teacher_Onizuka] - I don't know how many times I were about to faint from laughter, but I have a strange sense of humor. It's very good.

Check them out, also, if you're into the Ecchi [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecchi] genre, I have lots of recommendations in that genre, and no, I don't know any good Hentai.

The escapist (probably) biggest anime and manga Otaku, Signing of.

I had an extensive list somewhere. I'll edit it in if I find it.

EDIT: Didn't find the one I was thinking of, but I did find another, so here it is. Bear in mind I was a little younger when I made this, and wasn't such a seasoned poster.

For series these are all great:

Death Note - Obviously you would have heard of this by now. One of the most popular (and for a reason) short anime series out right now. Incredible story that keeps you hooked from start to finish, and very excited without any actual physical action happening on screen.

Naruto - Ninjas, one of my favorite long running anime (more than 50 episodes) as of now. Granted it's not the best thing since internet porn, but I am easily pleased and I personally love it, and later on the story gets rather twisted too. However nowadays it seems like its cool on forums not to like naruto and bleach, no clue why. Maybe if you like Manga, you could try it out in it's paperback form, as it's filler-less then.

Gundam Wing - Mecha anime (giant robots), its vintage now, was released in 91 i think, but the story is deep and the overall package is well put together, i still enjoy it to this day. Be warned though, it is heavily political, but never boring, i guarantee you that.

Bleach - Death Gods, demons and whatnot. If you like action and buckets of blood, then this one might be up your street. Again it's not going to win any awards, but it's fun.

Fullmetal Alchemist - Alchemy and a masterful story, definitely one to watch, short series. Recommended

Cowboy Bebop - Possibly one of the greatest anime series of all time, bounty hunters. The film is also very, very good. short series. Recommended

Dragonball Z -...I don't know. I loved it but I grew up with it, and while the action is great the episodes were stretched somewhat.

Ghost in the shell: stand alone complex - Cyberpunk, very deep storyline, very intricate, very interesting.

One Piece - Pirates, light hearted yet action packed, emotional, and hilarious at the same time, one of my favorite long running series.

Samurai Champloo - From the makers of cowboy bebop, amazing also, samurai, sword fighting and very well done.

Trigun - again an awesome anime, full of action and well developed characters, one of the best out there if the golden age (the 90s) i think, dystopian sci-fi. Recommended

Noir - In my eyes, a masterpiece. Assassins and amnesia, a great soundtrack, compelling story and a gunfight every episode, it actually had me hooked till the end. Recommended

Black Lagoon (I know i have put up a lot of action anime, but these are all great, and this is no exception. Mercenaries in south asia, gunfighting) Recommended

Code Geass

*More on the way.

And as for movies (without description, maybe I'll edit in some when I have time, but google is your friend)

Ghost in the shell 1&2
Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade
Grave of the fireflies
Perfect Blue
The Castle of Cagliostro
Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
Sword of The Stranger.
Tokyo Godfathers.

I liked Trigun. The ending seemed a bit abrupt, though. Also, MVM's subtitles later on were awful. "$NAME?" indeed.

Along with a ton of sexual stuff that's likly to fly right over your head.
Lucky Star [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LuckyStar](PG) (no violence, no action, no mind screwing. A gentle slice-of-life comedy),
Yeah, I think it's a little too early in his anime watching for Lucky Star. Maybe Azumanga Daioh instead.

Dark, but very funny.

Don't watch ANYThING from Shonen Jump if you have seen any of their other works. This includes DBZ, Naruto, Bleach, Yu Yu Hakusho, Ruruni Kenshin, Yu Gi Oh, and others.

Here is the plot for Jump Manga/Anime:
Some boy (it is always a boy) is not accepted by the community for whatever reason.
They learn about something that the entire series will revolve around.
They find out that they are really good at said thing.
Someone comes that is stronger and plans to destroy what the protagonist cares about.
protagonist gets strong enough to defeat the villan by using friendship.
Repeat the previous two steps until you are no longer profitable.

I am totally serious, every single one. No variation except for the method used to save the world. Apparently you can destroy the world with anything from card games to ghosts.

Lots of people have recommended Cowboy Bebop, and I agree, there is action, but not so much as to make it cheezy. Also, you get to see people motivated by the simple need to find their next meal, as opposed to the end of the world.

FLCL is another one I recomend, as long as you don't mind weirdness.

Trigun, Ghost in the Shell, and Paranoia Agent are all others I would recomend.

Funny how Death Note is Shonen Jump and yet, in a way, follows almost exactly the same plot you've laid out. I find that hilarious.

I mean look:

Some boy (it is always a boy) is not accepted by the community for whatever reason (Okay, that rarley happens). Light
They learn about something that the entire series will revolve around. Death Note
They find out that they are really good at said thing. Yup
Someone comes that is stronger and plans to destroy what the protagonist cares about. L wants to stop Light
protagonist gets strong enough to defeat the villan by using friendship. In a way, yes.
Repeat the previous two steps until you are no longer profitable. Apparently, it was only profitable once.
