Cowboy Bebop, Great teacher onizuka, rouroni kenshin, code geass and trigun were all good to watch. Angel dansetsu, claymore and vagabond if you want to read.
best place to watch is animeviewer.net, although alot of other places exist.
onemanga.com is a good site to read online.
BLEACH + NARUTO = A**WIPE

At first I thought I didn't like anime, but I'm beginning to think that's just because I've only seen the bad ones. I'm not sure which ones will be good and which ones will disappoint me. If you know of any cool anime shows you would like to recommend not only for me, but for all of us, pitch it here.
If I just name off things I like I may end up leading you off in the completely wrong direction. Could you summarize what it is you do and don't like before I list some things off?
The reason I didn't list off everything I like/don't like before is because not everyone has the same opinion as me. I was hoping this thread would benefit more than just me. I was sort of hoping people could tell me WHY I would care about any title they reccommend but I forgot what forum I was posting in. Silly me, oh well.

What I do like:
Death Note: Light Yagami has found a notebook that can kill anyone just by writing down their name and thinking about their face. He can also control their actions. With such power he intends to create a world free of crime while becoming a god of the new world. When all the worlds criminals begin to die, the media names him "Kira" or Japanese for killer. the worlds greatest detective (codenamed L) begins to hunt him down. In order for Light to become a god of the ideal world, he must find and kill L. It's very much like a game where Light uses the various mechanics of the death note to get himself closer to L while L can only rely on his incredible powers of observation and deductive reasoning skills.

Code Geass: In the future (One year from now), imperialist Britain takes owns 1/3 of the world. One of these countries is Japan, or renamed "Britannia." A student gains the ability to control minds. Unfortunately he'll have to see their face in order for the effect to work, but he's also a tactical genius. He forms a resistance group known as the "Black Knights" and uses these powers to reclaim Japan's independence. Although it's only one year in the future, they still have giant robots that can wield swords, lances, machine guns and hook shot like devices.

Zoids: Giant robots in the form of common animals try to kill eachother with various abilities. No reason to hate it.

What I Don't Like
Naruto
Bleach
Yu-Gi-Oh
Yu-Yu-Hakusho
Naruto
Rurouni Kenshin
Pokemon
Dragonball
Afro Samurai
Bo*7
Naruto
*more when I think of it

Stuff I said
Funny how Death Note is Shonen Jump and yet, in a way, follows almost exactly the same plot you've laid out. I find that hilarious.

I mean look:

Some boy (it is always a boy) is not accepted by the community for whatever reason (Okay, that rarley happens). Light
They learn about something that the entire series will revolve around. Death Note
They find out that they are really good at said thing. Yup
Someone comes that is stronger and plans to destroy what the protagonist cares about. L wants to stop Light
protagonist gets strong enough to defeat the villan by using friendship. In a way, yes.
Repeat the previous two steps until you are no longer profitable. Apparently, it was only profitable once.
Death note is better than most of the others, but this just reinforces my point.

Anyways, the first part has been ytue in just about any Jump series I can think of. To use the most popular example, Naruto is hated by the entire village. The person does not have to be hated though, they just have to be outside of the mainstream community, either by getting a late start, (Bleach) being reclusive, (DBZ) or being super awsome and being singled out at every turn. (Yu Gi Oh) While Death Note does not use the friendship schtick, Light is motivated by the greater good. I have stopped reading/watching pretty much every single Jump series because they seem like carbon copies and get really boring when you know when they are going to start a speech. Death Note is darker than most, though, and the differentiation makes it more enjoyable.

I enjoyed it, but didn't you think Afro Samurai was a bit of a clusterfuck of a story? It should have just been put across two films or 4 more episodes because I think everything was too densely packed into 5 episodes.

Have you tried Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist, or Bleach? Those are my favorites.
I don't know you, but you just named my favorite three as well. Gantz is also pretty good. I've heard from my girlfriend that Blood Plus is also good. Unfortunately, I don't have a lot of time to watch any other stuff. So those are my suggestions.

Hmm, not much to go on. Perhaps you could tell us a bit about why you like the shows you like, and why you hate the shows you hate.

Edit:

i feel they could have easily spread it out into at least 10 episodes, as it is though you are right it attempted to pack to much story in to too little time but i preferred that style compared to things like Naruto or DBZ where entire episodes were given over to powering up, super hero/villain banter or excessive monologuing

my list is still a good place to start. though you would probably want to do a bit more research on anything that caught your eye from that list. but say you hate anything with action for some reason... then you could just ignore any title that has action beside it.

you can also compare how i rate shows with how you might rate the same show. and if you find yourself agreeing with me most of the time on the shows you have seen... then with any luck you would agree with me on the shows you havent seen (after seeing them)
