So... you're looking for a good balanced competitive FPS on the console platform which isn't CoD.

You have my best wishes with your search.

I've never played Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer, but from what I've seen of the campaigns the first one is better. I know I highly recommend CoD: MW. I could beat legendary difficultly on Halo 3 without a gratuitous amount of trouble, but Veteran difficulty in Modern Warfare is brutal. If you want a challenge it's the way to go.

I have never had the extra money to pay for a Live gold account, but I imagine that Left 4 Dead (2) are both good games to play online. I'll also put out another plug for borderlands. I've played a lot of co-op and it's loads of fun.
You're right about MW1. I've played it for ages, beaten SP on veteran twice, and it's by far the game i've played multiplayer on the most.

But i'm getting tired of it, and the balance issues are annoying.

If you can't wait, Halo 3: ODST as it comes with the Halo 3 multiplayer with every map pack, or if you can wait, Halo: Reach.

Halo 3 is very balanced. And since you CANNOT play PC games. Play Halo 3 or TF2 Xbox verison...Wait...what system do you own?
Got an Xbox and recently picked up a PS3 to play with my RL friends, who mainly are on PS3.

So, console isn't an issue.

Though, i'd prefer to play multiplayer on 360, since the connection generally seems better on Live.
If you have both I would say

Halo 3: ODST. All Multiplayer Maps + Firefight. A good deal if you don't already have Halo 3. Though you might want to wait until Halo: Reach comes out.

Killzone 2. More like MW which you said you were looking for. In my opinion blows Call of Duty away but that is subjective.

MAG. Multiplayer only game. 256 player battles. Fun.

Resistance 2. A bit like Halo with some CoD for flavor. Nice variety of weapons.

Unreal Tournament 3. Very old school. Health, armor, arcade like gameplay. If you ever played Doom, Quake, or similar, you know what to expect. Would recommend the PS3 version. It has support for mods and is more up to date.

Left 4 Dead 2 If you played L4D you know what to expect. I find the Versus mode good for competitive play that focuses on teamwork but not a good game if you are looking for the traditional competitive gameplay.

I would not recommend The Orange Box for consoles (Half Life, Episode 1, Episode 2, Portal, TF2) unless you plan on playing Portal and Half Life. Just wait until you get a decent PC.

A more balanced FPS than CoD4 on a console?
Eh, CoD World at War.

And don't give me that MP40 Juggernaught crap. It's not that bad.

Just download Doom and Doom II from XBLA. Best fifteen dollars you ever spent.
Sorry I have to disagree. Duke Nukem 3D was the best Ten Dollars I ever spent. (on XBLA)

Team Fortress 2, varied fps gameplay with a lot of different modes. It is constantly updated and has a strong fan base that influences the game designers updates.

An oldie but a goodie, Star Wars Republic Commando for the original Xbox. Don't exactly remember the quality of the multiplayer, as the last time I played it on Live was quite some time ago, but the single player mode was immersive and innovative.

BFBC one was and still is a great game. probably wont find many people still playing but it is so much more fun than BFBC2. Like TF2, the game didn't take itself entirely seriously, both in multiplayer and story.

killzone 2 if you have a PS3

Do you have a good Mac? Valve is converting a lot of its source based games to the Mac, TF2 is done already.

If that isn't even an opition, well... what system do you have?

Killzone and Resistance 2 both have online, resistance can have up to 64 players or something in a match so things get pretty intense, but KZ handles more like BF:BC2 in that it feels somewhat 'clunky' even with sensitivity up

Don't bother (by which I mean, of course, these are the ones you mention to be clever and ironic)recommending:

Modern Warfare 2. Badly balanced. Don't like the game.
Bad company 2. Played it at a friends. Not a fan.
Modern Warfare 1. At the moment, this is what I usually play, and have played a lot. This doesn't mean you need to recommend a similar game. I'm becoming tired the game though. The overpowered tactics and weapons(the M16, snipers etc) get on my nerves, and i'm getting tired of the maps.
Left 4 Dead. Really good fun with friends, but i'm wanting online versus/competitive.

I want a game with good balanced multiplayer. A good story is a bonus, but there are lots of good single player games, so i'm currently looking for a well balanced multiplayer.
You tell us not to bother mentioning things to sound smart then list all of the typical thicko's favourite games. I guess that is ironic though.

Sorry but you've mentioned Left 4 Dead and you can't play PC games so I'm afraid I can't recommend anything with multiplayer. If you've not yet played Bioshock then hurry up and do it. Just avoid the awful sequel. If you've got a wii then you cannot do any better than the Metroid Prime trilogy. The defining series of FPS games.

I told people not to bother mentioning those games because i've already played them and they aren't what i'm looking for.

It would have been a waste of time writing the OP, then having to go through the large number of posts recommending MW2 when i've already decided it's not what I want.

Also, even were I mentioning them to sound smart, that's not ironic, if they're the typical thicko games.

It would have been ironic if I'd said it to sound smart, and then mentioned all the games that have perfect balance or "typical smart people games".

Cheers for the recommendations though, but i've not got a Wii.
