Before you all rant at me, yes I know this thread is done to death, the reason I'm making one is I want some sugestions that are specific to the kind of shows I like.

Right so I want to get into anime but I've tried all the obvious shows (naruto, Dragon ball, etc) so I tought I would ask the anime fans we have around the site. What I want is a mix of action and character and relationship development. Sex is fine but obvious not to hentai levels. If it helps the only anime I've watched all the way though has been The last airbender (I know its not Japanese but it was awesome so shh)any help would be good really.

Waits for the inevitable lists to show up. I swear some people must write them down and then paste them in these threads.

Watch Cowboy Bebop for a good mix of action and Character development. It's also short, so it isn't a big time investment.

EDIT

Called it!

My List

Look here at what I've watched so far, but off the top of my head I'd recommend:

FLCL
Cowboy Bebop
Trigun
Clannad and Clannad Afterstory
Kanon
Azumangadaioh
Lucky Star
Darker than Black
Ghost in the Shell
Fullmetal Alchemist and Brotherhood
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Paranoia Agent
Samurai Champloo
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

*Whew* that should be a good starting list

Lol no it was just a quick list but it would be useful to keep it in a notepad for future reference :p

Lol doesn't hurt, could always narrow it down to a specific genre

Sci-fi would be good. Though I always thought you would get less of the relationship stuff in sci-fi animes.

You should watch American Pickers, it is about these dudes that look through old junk for neat stuff. It has no animation.

Good Sci-fi ones would be:

Trigun - Has very little relationship stuff in it
Ghost in the Shell (Stand Alone Complex and 2nd Gig) - Also has very little in it
Cowboy Bebop - Can't recall any relationship aspect to it at all

Well, there was Spike's flashback girlfriend, but it didn't impose on the story too much.

I was watching this somewhat interesting one on Netflix called Queen's Blade. It's only 16 episodes long though. I suspect there's more in development. If nothing else there's plenty of boobs in it.

I clipped down his list to include only shows that A: fit the action and character development request and B: I've seen and know are good. Another one off the top of my head is Ga Rei Zero.

I'm ashamed to say that I've seen that too. I wouldn't recommend it, OP.

Toradora. Just make sure to watch every episode to the bloody end. Yes that includes after the credits.

Typical teenage love-pentagon type thing but very well done and who doesn't love tiny violent tsunderes?
[sub] Yes okay theres' not much in the way of action but I don't care, it's brilliant[/sub]

Trigun vandread wasn't to bad if a little weird gun sword was also weird but I liked it anyway but I love trigun so I couldn't recommend it enough. (side not by sci-fi do you mean giant robots or just any futuristic anime?)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica - It's awesome

Madoka has balance of action/relationship development and its pretty popular for a reason.
