FLCL *Fooly Cooly*

Why you ask?

No tentacles, no rape, no directly or overtly or excessive sexual themes, no blood guts or gore. So what does it have? Great story, great action, great characters and complex symbolism and storytelling mechanisms. Plus, only 6 epps long. Full of win, no matter how many times you watch it.
Just to let you know, I've been informed that Fooly Cooly is a americanise word for it's name "Furi Kuri" which is onomatopoeia used in lesbian manga(not sure if its yuri) but since that is only meantion once in the anime it's not that important.

There are plenty of "non-rapey" anime considering anime shouldn't have any tentcle rape since there is a differernt genre for that which anime usually likes to distance itself from. Depending on whether it's just the wierd stuff or violence all together recommendations could range from FMA to Angel Beats to something like Spirited Away. Blood is fairly unavoidable in anime but actual violence and/or gore isn't that hard to avoid.

Try Spirited Away

It's not best "Anime" there is, but it can easily pass as a "good fairy tale" in the eyes of adults.

Please, this is too easy, just show her any and every Studio Ghibli film, and if that doesn't work show her Samurai Champloo, Cowboy Bebop, Grave of the Fireflies, Perfect Blue or Akira.

Who told you that? The creator is on record saying that it's a nonsense word he used as the title of the series because it "sounded American." Although Furi Kuri is an accurate transliteration of how someone from Japan would pronounce it; this is because there is no distinction between L and R in the Japanese language; both letters represent a sound that's somewhere between an L and a D, or like a rolled Spanish R that stops after the first flip of the tongue.

Don't forget the fact that it's Shota, easily one of the creepiest official subgenres in anime...<.<

To all the people suggesting Cowboy Bepop:

Not really a good choice.
True. That remains to this day the bounciest pair of boobs I've ever seen on basic cable.

They won't find out. Lightning fast pace rules out every possibility to understand this show. For someone fresh to Anime i mean. ;)

The whole making out with a grown women at the very end is sort of a give away... and that's besides the whole being constantly abused and molested by said women... I mean it's kind of fucked up when taken out of context actually...<.<

"at the very end"
Man, we're talking "Mom" here ! No person cosidered "sane" by modern standards and unrelated to Anime will survive that long. There are reports of brain damage caused by watching FLCL. ;)

Anything by Studio Ghibli
Basically this, Grave of the Fireflies and Howl's Moving Castle being the two films I saw.

I also wanted to say Paprika, which is a beautifully surreal thriller/adventure film about dream manipulation (personally, I felt it was Inception done right), but I realised that both tentacles and attempted rape are actually present.

Show her Avatar: the last airbender. Practically G rated, great fun to watch etc.

Yes I know it's western animation, not anime, but this is your mum we're trying to fool, not somehow who really gives a damn about those distinctions.

Shigurui. Samurais + ultra-detailed gore + nudity. Not really out of place in some Hollywood movies.

Usagi Drop seems like the ultimate solution to this problem: it's the most touching, down-to-earth, and uplifting anime I've ever seen and it's literally *about* being a parent. I guarantee you she'll cry. You'll cry too. Downside is that it's only available subbed since it's so recent, but it's available legally and free for streaming in the US on crunchyroll right now.

It's probably more practical to go with one of the Studio Ghibli films, though, since they can be viewed in one sitting and it's hard for people to watch with subs for the first time. NOT grave of the fireflies >_<. Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, or one of the other ones that end with less tragedy.
