Fullmetal Alchemist An original setting, with an interesting story as well as some pretty good fight scenes.
Cowboy Bebop Great characters, Great writing and just generally great.
Baccano! Best gangster story I have ever seen, period.
FLCL (Fooly Cooly) Insane, yet hilariously awesome.

All of these have pretty good english dubs too.

Hmm. That one has been sitting on my netflix for weeks now, and I wasn't gonna check it out, but if you vouch for it...

Anyways, my favorite anime was Fullmetal Alchemist, or Cowboy Bebop.

yeah it on netflix for quite awhile, watched it and loved it ever since. now, back to watching "soul eater"

Deathnote and One Piece have the best of both worlds. Deathnote is very serious and very clever, but is relatively short. One Piece is light hearted and cool, but has some incredibly serious themes that endear you to the characters, it's also been going on for ten seasons and hasn't gotten old to me yet. It's also very funny.

Oh, and Fullmetal Alchemist too.

Edit: oh, DUH. Watch Rurouni Kenshin, or Samurai X. Try to Find Kenshin (Subbed), Samurai X is in English. My Avatar is Kenshin.

Pani Poni Dash is a good anime if you like random insanity. The dub is pretty good too.

Also, Princess Jellyfish is hysterical:

A super-nerdy girl lives in a house with other sheltered nerdy girls (all calling themselves otaku) who avoid popular and trendy people. Also, they avoid men at all costs. Then the super-nerdy girl (who has an obsession with jellyfish because her mother took her to see them at the aquarium before she died) accidentally brings home a girl who she thinks is an urban "princess" but is actually a really pretty cross-dressing boy.

Hilarity ensues.

I'm not sure I can think of a way to distinguish my suggestion from the others here, as it's essentially my word against theirs - and, in reality, their word is probably far more qualified than my own.

But.

Do, before trying anything else, watch the first episode of this, it changed me from an anime hater to a lover of nigh fanboi proportions.
