its all been recommended generally but you'll likely wade through an ocean of bands that are utter shit so be warned... (not all death metal, but I don't deal in light music)

Lamb of God, probably my favorite all around band. Album wise listen to As the Palaces Burn up to the new stuff. Their old vocal style is terrible but the guy is a goddamned beast nowadays. Best vocalist imo.

Slayer. Everyone knows Slayer. Come on. All Slayer is good. There is no bad Slayer, only songs you don't like as much.

Chimaira.

Austrian Death Machine. Good songs and funny as hell.

Try Behemoth. Basically Any album from Zos Kia Cultus onward. Newer stuff is high quality awesome.

Entombed is the fucking shit. All of their death metal is either above par or good enough. They have a "death n roll" album called To Ride Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth and I recommend it.

Vader is really good. Their cover of Reign in Blood by Slayer is excellent.

SepticFlesh (one word) is decent. They have a an album or two that make you wish you had an army to slaughter the world with. Orchestral/blackened death metal.

Dimmu Borgir, also black metal but unlike most black metal they aren't shitty.

Kataklysm isn't too bad. In Shadows and Dust has one hell of an epic intro.

Meshuggah. Check a song called Bleed. Nuff said. Can be reptetive due to the writing of the songs, but when they're heavy goddamn look out.

Don't often listen to it. LOVE The Agonist though. Kind of odd when she sings normally though and some songs she switches up the vocals a load.

Shamelessly advertising my own band. Doom/death metal with progressive bits, often compared to Opeth, but just generally slower.

If you're willing to put up with prog elements, I've gotta recommend Opeth's album Ghost Reveries. If you want prog with Middle east influences, try out Orphaned Land's album The Neverending Way of ORwarriOR.

Scratch that. Try out Orphaned Land regardless of what you like.

Also, to everyone suggesting Opeth: They're not death metal and never will be.
Hate to break it to you, but they are in face a death metal band. Progressive Death metal to be precise.
You may not like it, but that does not mean that it isn't death metal. And trying to deny it just makes you come off as an elitist dickwad.

You just have to find the right death metal band that sparks your interest. From hen on, you will be a fan. Now stop being a close minded prick and let other people listen to whatever music they want. Maybe you should tell us what music you listen to so we can tell you how much it sucks.

I recently discovered that death metal is pretty dang awesome, but I don't really know any good death metal bands.
Since you aren't to familiar with the genre, it's probably a good idea to start with something accessible. A lot of the progressive and melodic death metal bands will throw in non-death metal elements, and if done right it makes a great sound and also helps attract newcomers to the genre.

Try:
Eucharist - Mirrorworlds
Lykathea Aflame - Elvenefris
Opeth - Blackwater Park, Still Life, My Arms Your Hearse
Katatonia - Brave Murder Day, Dance of December Souls
Death - Symbolic, Individual Thought Patterns, Human
In Flames - Lunar Strain
Dark Tranquility - Skydancer
Disembolwelment - Transcendence Into the Peripheral
Sentenced - North From Here

And for raw morbid death metal:
Autopsy - Severed Survival, Mental Funeral
Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream

Personally, I prefer progressive to death metal. So, here's a few choices that combine the two.

Born of Osiris. New album, 'the Discovery', is absolutely immense.

Ana Kefr. This band is nothing short of amazing. Their latest album, 'the Burial Tree', is my album of the year, without a doubt. You have to listen to the whole thing through though. If you only listen to individual songs, it takes away from the grandeur of the entire as a whole.

If you prefer melodic death metal, Dreamshade is definitely worth a look. I now prefer them to Children of Bodom. CoB become old real fast for me. Dreamshade is a new breathe of fresh air.
