Recommend me some good metal of the death variety.

Lots of excellent suggestions ITT.

My two all-time favourite death metal bands would have to be Nile and Morbid Angel.

Unfortunately it's a genre that's swamped with far too much second rate me-too generic stuff - I just find it really hard to get excited about Generic Brutal Death Metal Band #34 when really all they sound like is an inferior version of late-period Cannibal Corpse. It's one of the reasons I love Nile so much, they took the brutal death metal template but then actually did something different and interesting with it.

I give another recommendation to Strapping Young Lad. Just about all their stuff is amazing. Most of Devin Townsend's solo stuff is really good too, although most of it probably wouldn't be considered death metal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VjR71VwiP6s

A band that I haven't seen linked but is absolutely amazing is The Project Hate MCMXCIX. They're an industrial death metal band that uses a lot of clean female vocals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U4o-vA2bSqM

This statement is gonna be like catnip for the "anti-genre" people out there, but what style? I'm really into melodic death metal, so you might wanna check out Soilwork, Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, Death, Amon Amarth, and so many others. Look em up!
