Hello again, fellow Escapist SkullCap here with another Recommend This, the thread where Escapists share their suggestions with one another for films of certain genres for the sole purpose of broadening each other's movie palette. First I wanna say thank you to all the Escapist's who wrote in my Recommend This: FOREIGN films thread that you can also check out here:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.219959-Recommend-This-FOREIGN-films

In the second thread of Recommend This we're going to once again look into a misunderstood genre of film that is brushed aside because of the implications of it being "childish." That's right, today's recommendations are animated movies. Often times many people think that anything animated is only enjoyable for youths, I say NAY! Animation is only another form of film that can be enjoyed by everyone. I could write a paper about why animation is sometimes superior to live-action, but that would probably bore the hell out of everyone. So let's begin and just a quick side note: NOTHING DISNEY that is another thread in itself. I'll start with my pick.

LAPUTA: Castle in the Sky 1986

Now I know I can just put Hayao Miyazaki's picture up here and say all of them, but that would be too easy because the man is the master of animation. This film is appreciated, just not enough. Now Laputa is the story about Pazu, a miner in a machine based community that catches a young girl, Sheeta, who slowly falls from the sky (literally floats down from the sky). Sheeta carries a magical pendant that is the key to finding the legendary floating castle in the sky, Laputa. The two young heroes team up to find Laputa with the help of sky pirates, while avoiding a corrupt government official leading the government army after them in order to use the secrets of Laputa for his own purposes. Filled with amazing visuals, imaginative settings, likable characters, lazer shooting flying robots, and sky pirate battles this film is a gem of adventure that can be enjoyed by everyone.

Anyway that's my choice let's see what sort of recommendation's we can find.

I pick Spirited Away, although I haven't watch many animated movies to be honest.

Since it qualifies as anime in my book. Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was a beautiful piece of work.

I recommend both Rebuild of Evangelion movies. It's a masterful retelling of the events of Eva. Beautiful animation, awesome voice acting, believable characters and an astounding musical score put these movies above almost all others. I have to recommend these films since I consider Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance the greatest cinematic achievement of all time.

Got to agree there but one of my personal favs is Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. One of the best batman stories ever and until The Dark Knight easily the best Batman movie.

Grave of the Fireflies by Studio Ghibli is a very beautiful and moving example of an animated film. Also a real tearjerker though.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Kiki's Delivery Service
Whispers of the Heart
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Grave of the Fireflies
Howl's Moving Castle
Akira
The secret of NIMH
All Dogs go to heaven
Waltz with Bashir

all are either good, fantastic or fucking brilliant.
Grave of the Fireflies in particular is just the saddest thing ever, made me cry a little.

Final Fantasy: Spirits Within.

If you ignore the name (it was panned mostly because it has nothing to do with final fantasy) it's really good.

I recently watched Hulk vs. Which has two short movies of the Hulk fighting Thor and Wolverine.
If you haven't seen it its worth a watch, I saw it on-demand for like 2 bucks.

Both of these are extremely fine pieces of animation, and thus I'll recommend them as well.

I also recommend you check out the following:
- Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
- Jin-Roh (not a happy affair, caution is advised)
- Grave of the Fireflies (have a hanky ready for this one)
