The correct approach is to follow the the law until it VERY EXPLICITLY offends your religion, ie. spit on a Bible. For Christianity, it hasn't done that yet in North America, so we're safe.
yet? i think the laws in north America are sorta based on Christianity. don't Americans swear to god like, 7 times, in their pledge of whatever. even has it on the money. canada's theme song goes "god, keep our land glorious and free!" Thats pretty damn religious. Even the courts make you swear on the, say it with me now, BIBLE which(correct me if im wrong) has something vaguely to do with Christianity, neh?. Our laws are no match for that which is deemed religion(i call it wishful thinking)
I think religion is a personal thing, and should not interfere with society.

this is actually pretty sensitive subject if she has proof that he beat her then yes he should serve time although if there is no proof get a divorce, and the Koran doesnt say it is ok to beat a wife its the muslim countries that allow it and misinterpit(sp)
Actually the scripture permits all kinds of violence and nastiness. It isn't at all down to misinterpretation. Try reading an Abrahamic holy book. The texts hate women with a passion, the marital abuse to keep women in line is the least of it.

Its called political correctness get used to it, here in Britain we even have those monstrous sharia law courts so Muslims wont be offended by being under regular persecution if the law.
There are Jewish courts in the UK as well, there is a caveat to both. They are only allowed to pass judgements within the remit of UK laws, you'll frequently find cases of their judgements being overturned by a court of law because of that.

Anyway, B.O.T

Religion =/= Law and Law > Religion.

It's always struck me as a massive problem when Religion = Law as you end up with situations that are systemically unfair (like the one in the OP), unless the state keeps separate from the church who is going to help the people the church inevitably persecutes?
actually, religion and law were created for the same reason, and are essentially the same thing at heart, so its not unusual that the two try to overlap sometimes.

That's true, but both parties have to agree to accept the jurisdiction of the sharia court, and it's limited in terms of what cases it can preside over. They won't be letting them take on any murder cases any time soon, but they can preside over domestic violence cases.

I doubt the Quran has a passage that states wifebeating is acceptable.
Actually, it does. But just like the Bible, even the Torah, has lines that seem idiotic (like killing homosexuals or your children if they don't obey to you), so does the Quran, but remember that some people, or group of people, tend to do everything they are told before using this mighty ability known as common sense .

I kinda wish my mom would stop beating my dad though. Not to mention, even her mom likes to beat him sometimes. It's a family tradition.

It horrifying to me how religion, all religion, not just Islam, seems to get a free ride away from critism, because it's faith based.

The shit that has children being forced to marry adult men? That's wrong, I don't care what your religion says.

Those horrifying exorcism camps that Christian groups here in Australia run? So, so wrong, I can't even begin to talk about it?

Entrenched violence against women and children? Wrong.

The exclusion, exorcism or even killing of homosexuals? I'll let you guess how I feel about that.

And of course, female genital mutilation, which is one of the most despicable acts of violence against women, all in the name of culture, tradition and religion.

People should be free to practise any religion they choose. As soon as it starts physically harming people, that's when the law should step in.
This is how I feel about this, paticularly the last point. I've never heard about the exorcism camps in Australia though.

I believe in the separation of church and state mainly because religious law are seen as the word of God(s), therefore being less subject too change. Considering many of these laws were upheld as long ago as 1000 years ago, they just won't fit in to to societies of today. It also doesn't help that Abrhamic religions don't have history of getting along with people with ideas that differ from theirs.

I really want to see it, otherwise I wont believe it. These things always turn out to be implausible interpretations of stuff taken completely out of context.

You probably should buy a Quran with english translation, I had one lying around. I kinda hope my hamsters didn't use it for their house deco though. Or you can just look for one online. :)

Totally agree. Add in the right for parents of a religion to brainwash children into permanent acceptance of thier version of god at the expense of facts and life enriching education ( see the case in the USA where parents succesfully removed their children from school because by learning facts their children lost their religion). You dont have the right to force your child to belive that the moon is made of cheese why should you be able to force them to belive in something much more mentally damadging, like hell for example. In the specifics of this case, umm im pretty sure (im a Brit so forgive any ignorance), That religionnn dosnt matter if youve actually broken the law, (i belive there are exceptons for certain drug uses in ceretain temples...for some reason). Otherwise a christian could make a case for the justice of rape (Read the Bible that shit trully is bannanas)

Well, shes living in america, she has to follow the american Laws. The bible is against gays but everyone is fine with them and they are legal, and it would be absoluteley retarded if they werent. Religion doesnt over-rule Law.

This is a bit ironic on Islam's behalf as well, as they claim to be a peaceful faith. Religion has clashed with laws for years though (There's a lot of controversy in England about it, as the government was run by the church of England at one point), as their laws have never been adapted ever since they were written to fit in with society. This is why the Bible says homosexuality is wrong, that the Kuran says that you can beat your wife. The the Bible says that you can commit adultery and that you can't. They haven't been changed since they were written so even when stuff is added it isn't changed to fit together.

They are run by the Hillsong churches, the Mercy Ministeries. They take young women with histories of mental illness and self harm, seperate them from their families, take their funding away, and tell them that it's demons making them feel that way. And then they exorcise them. And if they don't improve, they get told that they are the ones at fault, and that if they don't open up to the repeated exorcisms and so forth, that they won't be allowed back into the community at large.

All genital mutilation is wrong, regardless of the gender of the person it's done on.

With that said, it's not the RELIGIONS that are necessarily the worst part. It's the people who take these faith based beliefs (You know, beliefs without a shred of evidence or verifiable fact behind them) and try to force them on the community at large. EVERYONE should answer to the same courts, or it's not justice.

Oh that's well informed.
Nevermind that it could, just perhaps, be PEOPLE who are the cause of all the evil in the world, right? Naah, it's totally religion.
He may have gone a little too far, but religion is provably the number one source of delusion in our species. Since few people know the definition anymore... Delusion (noun) Psychiatry. a fixed false belief that is resistant to reason or confrontation with actual fact.

And a planet full of delusional people isn't healthy.
