This is something I've been thinking about a lot recently, having recently come back to the games after many years of ignoring the series. Here goes (individually, each of these suggestions would make the games better, although they wouldn't all work together):

1) Open world
2) Real time battles - think something like the combat system from Tales of Vesperia
3) No limited move pool
4) Redesign the world to make any kind of goddamn sense at all
5) Get rid of the horrendous broken bridges [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BrokenBridge]
6) Get rid of the crappy [http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Ludicolo_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29] pokemon [http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Probopass_%28Pok%C3%A9mon%29] and stop adding new ones - there are enough already!
7) Don't let me catch God
8) Either remove the grinding or make it fun
9) More challenging battles
10) Don't make the cool mons useless or unavailable until the very end
11) Finally - and most importantly - get rid of the motherfucking HMs. No-one ever liked those things and adding more of them is not making the situation any better!

Note: While it's true that the Pokemon games are good, and that they still sell like hot cakes, that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement, or that the formula couldn't do with a bit of freshening up after 15 years. And of course this conversation has no point. It's just some people talking on the Internet. But it's still fun to speculate.
1.The world is open. You travel through it and everything.

2. The turn-based simplistic combat is what makes pokemon fun and addicting in the first place.

3.Wrong terms, pal. Unlimited movepools would mean every pokemon can learn every move ever. What you mean to say are the limited movesets.(You know, each pokemon can only have 4 moves at a time.) Once again, having only 4 moves allows the game combat to be simple, at the same time allowing for a variety of strategies. belive, wander around Smogon.com and marvel at how complex this shit gets with just 4 moves.

4.What doesn't make sense? You want to be the very best that no one ever was. How does that not make sense?

5. Well, they only want to make sure you're progressing correctly through a game. You'd be surprised how much you'd miss if you could just speed right through an entire region without gym battling or exploring.

6. Oh, why the fuck does everyone always seem to use a few obvious examples that new pokemon suck? Yeah, probopass and Ludicolo are ugly and you're the first person to ever say that. You're so original. No one ever mentions how ugly Raticate and Clefable are! Or Sunflora, or gloom, or psyduck, or drowsee and hypno! They're bloody horrific. But no one's making you fucking catch them. If you don't like 'em, ignore them and catch a shark-dragon or a jackal that knows kung-fu.

7.Then just don't catch him.

8. There's no real way to take out grind. No practical way that doesn't mess with the core concept of not only pokemon but jrpgs.

9.Stop grinding so much. or, you know, battle real people.

10. That's what trading's for, yo.

11. Adding more? Every generation has eight. And just eight. They're just another way of ensuring proper progression through the game. Though I would prefer they just use an item based system as to not unnecessarily corrupt my pokemon's moveset with terrible attacks (man, fuck cut.), so I'll agree with you on this point.

1) EV/IV training. Simply put, fuck right off with this.
EVs aren't so bad, but IVs bring my piss to a boil.

Okay, heres a list of recommendations from me:

1) EV/IV training. Simply put, fuck right off with this.
2) Enough of this "GOTTA CATCH THE LIMITED AMOUNT AVAILABLE IN THIS VERSION! POKEMON!" crap, make all pokemon acquirable and stop trying to "maximize profts durrr"
3) Keep the idea of the "Elite 4" but approach it differently. Have them all like Red, hidden away in hard to reach places full of dangerous pokemon and have other trainers trying to reach them. Once you beat all 4 of them, receive a phone call from the generic named after a tree professor, informing you that he is actually the champion. Have a shit brix worthy battle in home town. At least try something different.
4) Legendarys. Mewtwo was good, hidden away in a cave and kept as a secret but all of this "DERP IM A GOD LOL OH NOEZ MASTERBALL" shit is getting out of hand. Have them really well hidden, and give them a sidequest each, kinda like Kyourge and Groundon or Dialga and the other one.
5) HM's. Gtfo. Alternatively, make them "held items" like a surfboard or a hedge trimmer and make them have added effects like surfboard giving a damage boost to water types.
6) Moar endgame content. Have people recognize you as the Champion. Legendarys become available. All that sort of stuff.
7) 4 Regions. Let us explore all of them in one game. Thanks.

K, I'm done.
One last thing:

HO-OH USED SUNNY DAY
MANTINE USED SURF
ITS SUPER EFFECTIVE
ITS SUNNY
HO-OH USED FIREBLAST
ITS NOT VERY EFFECTIVE
MANTINE FAINTED
BTW ITS SUNNY LOL
DO YOU WANT TO CHOOSE ANOTHER POKEMON TO USE AGAINST THIS LEGENDARY WHICH YOU ONLY HAVE ONE CHANCE TO CHATCH?
YES
GO, AMPHEROS!
ITS SUNNY.

Overhaul the presentation.

Have weather effects like rain, sun ect ALWAYS (<3) displayed. Speed the text up for fuck sake. Why is everything in this game so slow? Fix the PC so that I can withdraw, move items, move pokemon and deposit pokemon without all the arseing about. Finally, do something with the battlecries.

I think an improvement would be to stop making new Pokemon. Some of the new ones are fucking stupid, in my opinion[not even just the ones mentioned above..]. Keep the oldies.
And even just a tiny bit of character customization would be dandy. How would that damage the core of the series? Deciding that I want to carry around a backpack instead of a fanny-pack with pink hair instead of blue couldn't do much harm...

I guess a few people have the same opinions as I do...

1) In my book, EV/IV training is just maths. I hate maths. Beyond the "Competitive Battling" scene, does it have a reason?
2) More plot lines, please. What if I don't want to "catch 'em all" and/or be a Pokemon Master? What if I want to be a Pokemon Gardener? Or Poacher? Bounty Hunter?
3) The Competitive Battling scene. I get that you want to add connectivity. Good for you. The only battle scene I want or need is the local one, as in within 10 feet of me.
4) Starter Pokemon. For gods sakes, change the types. So what if a steel type might tear through the first 6 gyms. I don't care if a dragon type starter would be the equivalent of four Fighters. Give us an option!
5) And on starters, if you have to have a fire type, don't make it fire/fighting. Or crap.
6) Character customization. Hell, the Pokemon get more of a wardrobe.

1. Character customization. Or at the very least, let me mess around with the wardrobe. Every time I rematch Riley, I kick his ass, but his sweet fedora and stylish blazer mock me.

2. I'm going to agree with Dominic. Change the presentation a bit. Like instead of replaying everything through text, just show the cool animation, and then give us the option of reading the text on some hidden list.

3. Maybe show the pokemon side to side in battle. You don't have to animate everything, but some pokemon really don't look good from the back.

4. Dear Arceus, get rid of roaming pokemon. I really don't bother with catching pokemon (I'm a "get the pokemon you want for your team and that's it" kind of trainer) much, but making pokemon this difficult to catch really isn't motivating.

All that really has bothered me throughout the series was that there was very little character customisation, pick the gender and the name, thats it. ¬_¬

I would prefer if they went for the Battle Revolution approach, pick a base for your character(tall, short, young, old, whatever you want) then add clothes of your choice on later. It would be good if you could change your character's appearance too later on if you so wished. Otherwise I'm happy with the pokemon games.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, do NOT make anymore goddamn pokemon, the designs on the Diamond and Pearl ones were all ridiculous, some even looked like they were thought up last second to give the first gen pokemon MORE evolutions(which look even more stupid than the before mentioned) Okay I'm done now XD

I'm always blown away that Pokemon is still viable in any way shape or form. Every game has been a re-release of the first game, with 0 critical improvements, nothing done to correct all the game's small flaws that add up to become a real problem, and graphically aren't far from the old Zelda games. There are tons of areas to improve upon, but my biggest gripes on the series and the reason I gave up on the girnd are as follows:

1) @#$%ing HMs: There should be no such thing as an HM slave. Pokemon games force me to waste 2 of my valuable 6 Poke slots on 2 pokemon that are garbage monsters that can store all the HMs. The alternative is, have 8 garbage Pokemon with 1 or 2 HMs each, and cycle them in while reading a strategy guide. Not reading a strategy guide? Then prepare to hike an hour into the heart of a mountain to discover you need Strength instead of Rock Smash, or Flash instead of Rock Climb, or Waterfall/Whirlpool and not just Surf. It's a nightmare. You can usually Dig/Fly/Escape Rope out of a cave, but it's a nightmare having to retraverse grassy expanses and mountains full of exploding geodudes and poison confuse ray zubats. The other issue of the HMs is that, they absolutely suck, except for Surf. With only 4 moves per Pokemon, I can't waste space on moves worse than watergun and ember. Even medicore Strength isn't going to cut it against those 95 damage perfect accuracy moves like flamethrower.

* Better idea: Dump the HMs and just let my Pokemon gain the ability to use the HM powers outside of battle with each gym badge or quest reward. In otherwords, if a pokemon is considered a strong one, let it push boulders and break rocks with its own strength rather than a special move. Same with trees. If my pokemon has the build to tear down trees, let it. Why does it matter if my pokemon knows the cut move? Why can't my big strong pokemon just snap the tree in half or cut it with a better move like razor leaf or slash or whatever? HMs gotta go.

2) 4 moves: NO! 4 moves is no good. This is the reason brute power is the ONLY viable path EVER! There's no room to waste and crap buffs/debuffs. Especially when we get into STAB bonuses and all that crap. I need my wasp queen tank pokemon using awesome bug moves and self healing, and can't afford toxic, despite it being a nice compliment on a tank. The Pokemon need to expand to at least 6 slots, but preferably 8.

3) Speaking of numbers of moves, how about lettign my pokemon store every move they learn in their little brains, and let tmy choose which moves are active for each battle. I hate learning a bunch of great moves and then having to forget them forever because I can't test a new move otherwise, or I have a move that's not good until later, like Nightshade, etc. If my pokemon learned it, let them keep it. I hate owning multiple pokemon of the same type. Let me change my pokemon's move pool between battles to suit my needs. This would be so important when dealing with the elite 4 and long dungeons of obnoxious creatures.

4) No more random battles. I love seeing a pokemon following me. They have proved by doing so, they can make a mini representation of any pokemon. Let the little mini pokemon represent themselves and I'll choose what I want to fight or not fight. I'd rather wander around a bunch of rattatas and bugs to get to that one bunny who keeps dashing away from me than spend hours being forced into battles that I will only run from. It would make play more exciting too, because it could be made to feel like dodging trainers. Let the pokemon charge me if they want, or run, or just stand there. Let my repel sprays make them all run, or attract sprays lure them to me. Hell, let me use mean look outsid eof battle and I'll go talk to that little abra and not have to try and use mean look on him before he teleports on turn 1.

5) Power balance: This game has the worst balance issues. Too many moves are only useful at levels 5 ad under, etc. Let the freaking moves level up. Why can't more moves gain power based on my pokeom's level? Why can't I continue to upgrade watergun until it is the same as flamethrower, and why can't I start with flamethrower and build it up to the powerful move it it in every game? It's not just the move imbalance. The whole super effective and stab bonus and criticals are all grossly overpowered. +50% is way too freaking much. Even + 25% seems too high. What's wrogn with +10% per bonus? I would be able to outfit a pokemon to my style more so if I wasn't being forced to exploit the STAB bonus and super effective bonuses for 1 hit killathons. What is a super effective critical worth against a pokemon with a double weakness? +200% on top of base damage? It's nuts! The game needs to calm down on the bonuses.

* another factor of the power imbalance is the whole PP for each move? Why can't I just have a life guage and a stamina guage and then have each move have unlimited use and balanced consumption rates? It would cut down on pokemon that know thunderbolt, flamethrower, surf, and some super uber move like hyperbeam. Make those weaker moves viable. I'll use flamewheel and flamethrower and firespin if the consumption for them justifies themir use. I'll use buffs and debuffs if I know I won't be 1 shot killed, and knowing the buff makes the consumption rate efficient.

6) Can I please have more to do than battle? And nto thsi dress up contest safari zone BS! I'm talking, watergun shootouts, a'la duck hunt. Give me minigames worth palying that require various classes of pokemon. Give my pre-evolves reason to stay little. Hell, making mini holes all over the place where they can squeeze in and find items would be justifiable enough, but give them little dog show type mini-games and I'll keep them small despite their lesser use in battle.

Pokemon was a good idea with a lot of room for improvement, which is what makes the past how many decades of no change so unforgiveable and its continuing popularity so mind blowing.

I THINK they should make a pokemon game for the console along these lines:

1. Have a real time battle system, it gets boring having to take turns back and forth, and just sit there and let your pokemon take damage every turn. Make it more like the manga/anime where your pokemon can actually use the battle field to their advantage.
2. Actually make stat-changing moves worth using, I've been playing pokemon since red/blue came out, and I've honestly never tried to keep at least one stat-changer in my poke-moves list.
3. Make more than one or two regions accessible. Gold/Silver/HG/SS were/are all amazing, mainly because you can go out, and do more after the Elite 4. I mean, how can you be the very best when you haven't even been to any other regions? (On a side note, the next game they make is probably going to be west of kanto. just sayin')
4. Customizable characters would be nice.
5. Maybe a better way to tell the difference between male and female pokemon besides the symbol besides their name? In real life you wouldn't be able to tell their gender from far away like that.
6. MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO CATCH ALL THE POKEMON.

That's all I have for that.

I'd also like to see a pokemon game where you play as team rocket and not suck.

As an addition to this list (which I agree one hundred percent), I'd like to propose that the Pokemon games begin to introduce some form of strategy beyond "Oh, hey, this type is strong against that type." I had the strengths and weaknesses of each type down by the time I was halfway through the first game.

An example: Are we in a water arena or is there water somewhere nearby? Well then, as we all know, electricity is particularly effective in water. Perhaps have your Flaffy (What? I like Flaffy.) drench the opponent with an Iron Tail or some such and then zap it.

This would require a deeper level of control than is available with the current style, so I believe that the Pokemon franchise might need to split into a handheld version (maintain the old style of play, with a few minor modifications, perhaps taken from the above list) and a console/PC version, one much more like a action title than a regular old JRPG (some of which do have an interesting plotline, you just have to look past Final Fantasy...which in and of itself is fine if you're feeling grindy).

I may elaborate more later, but alas, real life is calling and I must answer, leaving Internet discussions to themselves for a time.

I do really think the HM's need to go. Everyone does the same damn thing you have lil HM slaves. They don't fight and are usually level 3 that have all your HM moves. Most of us just get arround the system. Why not just let us smash rocks and move boulders when we get the badge cuz we are stronger.

Time to put on the nerd pants... [Pokemon]'s NERD PANTS let it say things to other commenters. It is Not Very Effective...

They've always done both of those since Emerald, and more so with Platinum and HG/SS.

8) The ability to re-challenge gym leaders. If you can fight the 4 fifty-bajillion times, but slightly stronger you should be able to do it with the gym leaders too.

10) Bring back the old room system a la Gold/Silver (did they do this in HG/SS?)
They added a gym leader challenge to HG/SS, you have to track them down on special days/times and ask them for a rematch in a special "rematch house". You can do this as many times as you want. I'm not 100% certain of the "room", but the "secret base" makes a return.

The NERD PANTS wore off. Pokemon don't wear pants, silly!

I agree with most of y'all that there should be some character customization, though I personally don't see the point to it. You don't really see "yourself" in the game. Perhaps an accessory system like in the contests, where you can put a coat or other identifying mark on your 'Mon (different than the pokeball sticker system).

I think something should be done to make otherwise useless Pokemon serve some other function. The myriad fish Pokemon, for example, that have stats giving them the offensive and defensive powers of a wet noodle, could be collected and put in a virtual fish tank of sorts (poketank?). Same deal with the squishy, non-battle-ready bug(pokerarium), bird(pokeviary), and various rodent (i got nothin...) Pokemon. I'm looking for some reason to want or collect them other than to complete the 'Dex. (HG/SS addressed this somewhat with the Pokewalker and Pokethlon minigames, but it's not nearly enough)

Also... make my nerd pants idea an in game item. I don't even care what it does, I just like silly ideas like that. lol j/k!

I think that about sums it up, until you read his Super Effective comic.

Then maybe they need to make a spin-off of the origionals to get something along the lines of what we're thinking. (PMD is good...)
